The Hidden Dangers of Soy Allergens
************************************************************************
1. Take one capful (the little
white cap that comes with the
bottle) and hold in your mouth for 10 minutes daily, then spit it out. (I
do it when I bathe.) No more canker sores, and your teeth will be whiter
without expensive pastes. Use it instead of mouthwash.
2. Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of peroxide to keep them
free of germs.
3. Clean your counters and table tops with peroxide to kill germs
and leave a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe,
or spray it on the counters.
4. After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour peroxide on it
to kill salmonella and other bacteria.
5. I had fungus on my feet for years until I sprayed a 50/50
mixture of peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and
let dry.
6. Soak any infections or cuts in 3% peroxide for five to ten
minutes several times a day . My husband has seen gangrene that would not
heal with any medicine but was healed by soaking in peroxide.
7. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water
and keep it in every bathroom to disinfect without harming your septic
system like bleach or most other disinfectants will.
8. Tilt your head back and spray into nostrils with your 50/50
mixture whenever you have a cold, plugged sinus. It will bubble and help to
kill the bacteria. Hold for a few minutes, and then blow your nose into a
tissue.
9. If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a dentist
right away, put a capful of 3% peroxide into your mouth and ho ld it for ten
minutes several times a day. The pain will lessen greatly.
10. And of course, if you like a natural look to your hair, spray
the 50/50 solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through. You
will not have the peroxide-burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages but
more natural highlights if your hair is a light brown, faddish, or dirty
blonde. It also lightens gradually, so it's not a drastic change.
11. Put half a bottle of peroxide in your bath to help rid boils
fungus, or other skin infections.
12. You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load
of whites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing
pour it directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it
and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.
13. I use peroxide to clean my mirrors. There is no smearing,
which is why I love it so much for this.
I could go on and on. It is a little brown bottle no home should be
without! With prices of most necessities rising, I'm glad there's a way to
save tons of money in such a simple, healthy manner! --- I've known that with
an infection, a bit of peroxide on that will fizz and help to cure the
infection. I've also known that if you had a dog that's flea infested, a bit of
peroxide in it's bath water will kill them immediately. But never thought of
all the above uses. It is a very useful bottle to have in your home.

The antimutagenic action of the molecules found in the white part of birch bark where chaga feeds inhibits free-radical oxidation and also induces the production of interferons, which helps induce DNA repair. The substances, contained in white part of birch bark contribute to the decrease of hypoxia and to increase of the stability of organism to the oxygen deficiency, being antihypoxant correcting the metabolism of cells. The anti-cancer properties of betulin or betulinic acid, a chemical isolated from birch trees, is now being studied for use as a chemotherapeutic agent. Chaga contains large amounts of betulinic acid in a form that can be ingested orally, and it also contains the full spectrum of immune-stimulating phytochemicals found in other medicinal mushrooms such as maitake mushroom and shiitake mushroom. The earliest evidence of chaga being used by humans comes from the 5600 year old "Ice Man" found in the Italian Alps[1]. Since the 16th century, there are records of chaga Mushroom being used in folk medicine and the botanical medicine of the Eastern European countries as a remedy for cancer and gastritis, ulcers, tuberculosis (TB) of the bones. In 1958, scientific studies in Finland and Russia found Chaga provided an epochal effect in breast cancer, liver cancer, uterine cancer, and gastric cancer, as well as in hypertension and diabetes. Herbalist David Winston maintains that it is the strongest anti-cancer medicinal mushroom.[2]
In 1998 there was a study in Poland that demonstrated Chaga's inhibiting effects on tumor growth.[3] Noda et. al found that betulin seems to work highly selectively on tumor cells because the interior pH of tumor tissues is generally lower than that of normal tissues, and betulinic acid is only active at those lower levels. Fulda et al. found in 1997 that once inside the cells, betulinic acid induces apoptosis (programmed cell death) in the tumors.[4] In 2005 there was a study done at Department of Medical Nutrition in South Korea. The Chaga Mushroom was evaluated for their potential for protecting against oxidative damage to DNA in human lymphocytes. The study found that the polyphenolic extract protected these cells against hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress.[5] Another study that year found the endo-polysaccharide of Chaga produced indirect anti-cancer effects via immuno-stimulation. The mycelial endo-polysaccharide of I. obliquus was identified as a candidate for use as an immune response modifier and indicate that the anti-cancer effect of endo-polysaccharide is not directly tumorcidal but rather is immuno-stimulating.[6][7] It has also been demonstrated as anti-inflammatory.[8] Saitoh Akiko published on the antimutagenic effects of Chaga in 1996, and Mizuno et al. published on the anti tumor and hypoglycemic activities of the polysaccharides from the sclerotia and mycelia of Chaga. Chaga grows in birch forests of Russia, Korea, Eastern Europe, Northern areas of the United States and in the North Carolina mountains.
BETULIN AND BETULINIC ACID
BETULIN (Betulinol, Birch camphor, Lupendiol) - natural combination - penthacyclic tritherpene alcohol of lupan line.
Chemical structure of Betuline and Betulinic acid produced by SNS Pharma.
BETULIN [473-98-3] C30H50O2, molecular mass 442,7 cream-colored crystall powder with betulin contents 85% or higher, white colored crystall powder with betulin contents 98-99%.
"........It is a scientific fact that chaga mushroom placed into a birch bark box acquires more expressed therapeutic properties. Basic acting substances of the white part of birch bark triterpenic bonds - betulin, lupeol, betulinic acid, etc. - they possess anticancerous action, causing apoptoz (programmed death) of cancerous cells and transfer to chaga, thus strengthening its properties..", says Galina Mikhaylovna Fedoseeva (see photo on the left), the Chairman of the Department of Biopharmacognosy and Botany of Irkutsk State Medical University, professor, Doctor of the pharmaceutical sciences.
The very compound that makes the birch “shine bright white” has been tentatively linked to treatment for such devastating human ailments as some melanomas or cancer, several forms of herpes and even for AIDS.
Betulin, a powdery substance in the outer bark of the birch tree, has been shown to help wounds heal faster and cut inflammation. Many cosmetic companies, touting it as a skin toner and restorer, add birch bark extract to various products. And a birch bark compound, betulinic acid, is being tested as a treatment for melanoma and other serious diseases.
Betulin can be easily converted to betulinic acid, which possesses a wide spectrum of biological and pharmacological activities. Betulinic acid has antimalarial and anti-inflammatory activities. Betulinic acid and its derivatives have especially shown anti-HIV activity and cytotoxicity against a variety of tumor cell lines comparable to some clinically used drugs. A new mechanism of action has been confirmed for some of the most promising anti-HIV derivatives, which makes them potentially useful additives to the current anti-HIV therapy. Betulinic acid is specifically cytotoxic to several tumor cell lines by inducing apoptosis in cells. Moreover, it is non-toxic up to 500 mg/kg body weight in mice. The literature concerning derivatization of betulin for structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies and its pharmacological properties is reviewed.
Fields of application:
1. Raw material for pharmaceutical production;
2. As a main active ingredient in parfumery-cosmetic products;
3. Technical aspects of application;
The producer is the company SNS-Pharma Inc (www.sns-pharma.ru), For industrial use it offers the following products made with its patented technology:
1. DBBE (dry birch bark extract) with 82-85% betulin content;
2. PBS (pharmaceutical betulin substance), purity 98%;
3. BSS (betuline standard sample), with 99.2% purity for chromatograph calibration;
4. Betulinic acid.
During the last twenty years the department of pharmacognosy and botany of Irkutsk State Medical University has been involved in the study of the effects of a birch /Betula pendula Roth./ on the vital activity of man. It is known since ancient times that white part of birch bark possesses the antiseptic properties: birch bark is applied to wounds for faster healing, tar and activated carbon is made also from it. Ancient Russian medical manual, recommending birch for treating the purulent wounds, the prolongedly unhealing ulcers, advises: "so that the rotten meat from the ulcer was eaten away, ground birch crust should be poured into the rotten wound ". A rim made from the white part of birch bark "removes" headache. It is possible to say that in nature there is no other tree so many parts of which (crust, leaves, buds, juice, wood and phytopathogenic parasitic fungus - chaga), so frequently were used in folk medicine.
Scientists Tulchinskaya and Yurgelaytis report, that in the air of birch forests there are 400 microbes into 1 cubic meter, which turns out to be lower than the existing standards for the operating rooms in hospitals. Especially successfully (in 3-10 min) the bactericides of white part of birch bark manage to eliminate pathogens of typhoid fever, tuberculosis and diphtheria. Unique therapeutic properties are given to white part of birch bark thanks to BETULIN - substance from the class of triterpenoids (triterpenovy diatomic alcohol of lupan).White part of birch bark remains white even when the tree itself is completely rotted. The stability to harmful microflora white part of birch bark is obliged precisely to betulin. The studies, carried out during recent years, showed that THE BETULIN has valuable pharmacological properties: antioxidant, antitumorigenic, antigipoksantnym, gepatoprotektornym, antiviral, immunomodulator, antibacterial, that regenerate, antipyretic, bile-expelling. Betulinic acid has been explored as a potential treatment for skin cancer for more than a decade. Betulin, its derivatives and other birch bark compounds also are being tested for effectiveness in treating HIV,the virus that causes AIDS, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which can cause severe cold-like symptoms and pneumonia. In the white part of birch bark there are other medical substances: betulinic acid, b - sitosterol, flavonoids, lupeleol and other. Examinations conducted, in Russian institute of pharmacology, showed that the complex of substances forming part of white part of birch bark possesses high antimutagenic activity, capable of lowering the number of mutations in the chromosomes and the genes, the frequency of the appearance of hereditary changes in the organism. The antimutagenic action of the substances of white part of birch bark is connected with their capability for the suppression of free-radical oxidation, and in the ability of white part of birch bark to induce the production of interferons, which, as it’s known, positively influence the processes of reparation of DNA.The substances, contained in white part of birch bark contribute to the decrease of hypoxia and to increase of the stability of organism to the oxygen deficiency, being antihypoxant correcting the metabolism of cells. Treatment of liver diseases is directed, mainly, to protecting cells of the liver from the damages caused by different chemical substances. Together with the radiation therapy and the surgery, in the therapy of the tumor pathology, the important component of treatment and rehabilitation of patients appears to be application of medicinal plants. The unique biological activity of the substances of those isolated by white part of birch bark contributes to the decrease of toxic action of chemo- and radiation therapy on the organism. The antioxidant activity of betuline is connected with its direct effect on the ferments of the antioxidant protection, whose basic functional role consists of the decomposition of organic peroxides, first of all - peroxides of lipids, which play paramount role in the disturbance of the normal structure of biological membranes. Substances forming betulin possess the high gepatoprotektornoy and detoxifying activity, inducing the ferments of the rendering safe system of the liver, it normalizes bile secretion, reduces cholesterol level in the blood. Statistics testifies that in the regions, where white part of birch bark is traditionally used in household articles such as caskets, boxes and ducts for storing food products, people live longer and the index of oncologic diseases was recorded as very low.

The Iodine/Iodide Loading Test
Important Information
This test is used to assess whole body sufficiency for the essential element iodine. It is recommended prior to and following 3 months on orthoiodosupplementation.
Introduction
Orthoiodosupplementation is the daily amount of the essential element iodine needed for whole body sufficiency (1). Whole body sufficiency for iodine is assessed by an iodine/iodide loading test (2). The test consists of ingesting 4 tablets of a solid dosage form of Lugol (Iodoral®), containing a total of 50 mg iodine/iodide. Then urinary iodide levels are measured in the following 24 hr collection. The iodine/iodide loading test is based on the concept that the normally functioning human body has a mechanism to retain ingested iodine until whole body sufficiency for iodine is achieved. During orthoiodosupplementation, a negative feedback mechanism is triggered that progressively adjusts the excretion of iodine to balance the intake. As the body iodine content increases, the percent of the iodine load retained decreases with a concomitant increase in the amount of iodide excreted in the 24 hr urine collection. When whole body sufficiency for iodine is achieved, the absorbed iodine/iodide is quantitatively excreted as iodide in the urine (1- 3). In the U.S. population, the percent of iodine load excreted in the 24 hr urine collection prior to orthoiodosupplementation averages 40% in more than 7,000 loading tests performed at the FFP Laboratories.----After 3 months of supplementation with 50 mg iodine/iodide/day, (4 tablets of Iodoral®) most non-obese subjects not exposed to excess goitrogens achieved whole body iodine sufficiency, arbitrarily defined as 90% or more of the iodine load excreted in the 24 hr urine collections [U1](2,4). Adult subjects retained approximately 1.5 gm of iodine when they reach sufficiency (3). A repeat loading test following 3 months on orthoiodosupplementation is recommended. The goal of orthoiodosupplementation is not the treatment of disease, but the supply of optimal amounts of an essential nutrient for whole body sufficiency and for optimal mental and physical performances. Whole body sufficiency for iodine correlates well with overall wellbeing, and some subjects could tell when they achieved sufficiency even before knowing the results of the test. Iodine sufficiency was associated with a sense of overall wellbeing, lifting of a brain fog, feeling warmer in cold environments, increased energy, needing less sleep, achieving more in less time, experiencing regular bowel movements and improved skin complexion (2). Whole body iodine deficiency, based on the concept of orthoiodosupplementation, may play an important role in several clinical conditions (5). Hundreds of physicians and other health care providers are now using the loading test and implementing orthoiodosupplementation in their practice, using a tablet form of Lugol (Iodoral®). A very good correlation between the results of the loading test and clinical response of their patients to iodine supplementation was reported (6,7). For consistency and reproducibility of results, the same Lugol tablets are used in the loading test and in the orthoiodosupplementation program.
Procedure for the loading test
Currently, there are four Laboratories performing the iodine/iodide loading
test: Doctor's Data, Inc. in St. Charles, IL,
FFP Laboratories in Flat
Rock, NC, Hakala Research in Lake Wood, CO. and Labrix Clinical Services Inc. in
Oregon City, OR. All three
labs supply their own protocol for details on collection of urine samples,
pooling samples for 24 hr. and sending a 2 ounce aliquot to the Laboratory for
analysis. We recommend this general outline:
1) Have patient stop ingesting iodine 24 to 48 hours before the test if post-
supplementation.
2) Discard first morning void;
3) Take 4 tablets of Iodoral® (in a sealed plastic packet);
4) Start collection of urine, following instructions from the Lab that supplied
you with the Kit;
5) The first void on the following morning should be included in the urine
collection;
6) If total urine volume is above 3 liters, follow instructions supplied with
the Kit.
Boxes of 60 packets containing 4 tablets of Iodoral® are available from Optimox Corporation for use with the loading test kit supplied by Doctor's Data in ST. Charles, IL, FFP Laboratories in Flat Rock, NC, Hakala Reseach and from Labrix Clinical Services for use by physician. The cost of one box of 60 packets is $36.00 and may be ordered by calling our toll free number (800) 223-1601. Too Much Aluminum in Infant Formulas, UK Researchers Find
ScienceDaily (Sep. 2, 2010) — The aluminum content of a range of the most popular brands of infant formulas remains high, and particularly so for a product designed for preterm infants and a soya-based product designed for infants with cow's milk intolerances and allergies, researchers have found.---A study by a team at Keele University in Staffordshire, led by Dr Chris Exley with Shelle-Ann M Burrell, demonstrating the vulnerability of infants to early exposure to aluminum serves to highlight an urgent need to reduce the aluminum content of infant formulas to as-low-a-level as is practically possible. The research has been published in the journal BMC Pediatrics Infant formulas are integral to the nutritional requirements of preterm and term infants. While it has been known for decades that infant formulas are contaminated with significant amounts of aluminum there is little evidence that manufacturers consider this to be a health issue. Aluminum is non-essential and is linked to human disease. There is evidence of both immediate and delayed toxicity in infants, and especially preterm infants, exposed to aluminum and the team contends that there is still too much aluminum in infant formulas --There has been a long and significant history documenting the contamination of infant formulas by aluminum and consequent health effects in children. Through these and other publications manufacturers of infant formulas have been made fully aware of the potentially compounded issue of both the contamination by aluminum and the heightened vulnerability, from the point of view of a newborn's developing physiology, of infants fed such formulas.---There have been similar warnings over several decades in relation to aluminum toxicity and parental nutrition of preterm and term infants. To these ends the expectation would be that the aluminum content of current infant formulas would at the very least be historically low and at best would be as low as might be achieved for a processed product. The team tested this premise and found that the aluminum content of a range of branded infant formulas remains too high.--The researchers chose 15 different branded infant formula products. These included powdered and ready-made liquid formulas based on cow's milk and a soya-based product. The categories of formulas included those for preterm babies, stage one (0-6 months) and stage two (6 months plus) infants. All products were stored according to the manufacturer's instructions. Products were sampled directly from their packaging to avoid extraneous contamination. Ready-made liquid products were shaken between each sampling.---In general, the aluminum content of formulas prepared from powdered milks were significantly higher than ready-made milks.---Commercially available branded infant formulas used by literally millions of parents to feed children of up to 12 months-plus of age are still significantly contaminated with aluminum. The concentrations of aluminum in the milk formulas varied from ca 200 -- 700 μg/L and would result in the ingestion of up to 600 μg of aluminum per day.---The concentrations of aluminum in infant formulas are up to 40 times higher than are present in breast milk. These concentrations are all several times higher than are allowed in drinking water. They are clearly too high for human consumption and certainly too high for consumption by such a vulnerable group as pre-term and term infants.---The suggestion is that these products are 'contaminated' with aluminum as each of the manufacturers insist that aluminum is not knowingly added to their products.--The sources of such contamination are myriad though would probably include equipment used in both processing and storing of bulk products. In addition many of the formulas were packaged for sale using aluminum-based materials. The high content of aluminum in the soya-based formula probably reflects its prior accumulation in the soybean plant and the known aluminum tolerance of some soybean cultivars that are grown on acid soils.--While it is the case that the present levels of aluminum in infant formulas have not been shown to cause adverse effects in healthy infants, it is also the case that there have not been any clinical studies which refute such as a possibility. Previous research has highlighted the potential toxicity of aluminum in infants with confounding disorders (including, prematurity, poor renal function and gastrointestinal disease) and fed infant formulas and these studies when viewed alongside aluminum's known connections with medicine and human disease should at least deter complacency concerning this issue. It is widely accepted that the not fully developed physiologies of infant's gastrointestinal tract, kidneys and blood-brain barrier may predispose them to aluminum toxicity and while there are no definitive links between aluminum exposure through infant formulas and immediate or delayed toxicity in healthy infants this neither should not nor does not preclude such as a possibility.---Story Source:The above story is reprinted (with editorial adaptations by ScienceDaily staff) from materials provided by Keele University, via AlphaGalileo.---Journal Reference: Shelle-Ann M Burrell, Christopher Exley. There is (still) too much aluminium in infant formulas. BMC Pediatrics, 2010; 10 (1): 63 DOI: 10.1186/1471-2431-10-63

The process of distillation is very simple. You are taking a chemical mixture (usually water with other chemical substances such as sugar, etc) and heating it up so that the lowest boiling point atoms leave the other chemical compounds behind.
For instance, if you take coca-cola and boil it very gently, the first item to evaporate will be the water.
The water leaves the sugar and other additives and moves into another compartment where it cools off and is condensed, creating pure water from coca-cola.
Using this method you can make whisky from beer, and brandy from wine.
It should be noted that all a still does is to separate the original liquid into two different compounds.
It’s simply speaking a way of separating components, nothing is added at all.
Items You Will Need to Build a moonshine still
One large cooking pot (usually a pot that holds about one gallon of liquid will do the trick)
A mixing bowl with a round bottom. A flat bottom bowl will not work well, due to the fact that you would like the distillate to drip into the collecting jar.
One 8 oz drinking glass.
One magnet. The magnet is used to keep the collection glass from moving around the pot.
One small weight. This weight will be used to keep the round bottom bowl in place. You can use a brick, or a 5lb weight used for weight lifting (you should have something very heavy to keep any alcohol vapour from leaking out)
A cooking thermometer, which is used to measure the temperature of the liquid.
1/2 gallon of red table wine.
A few ice cubes to cool the vapour.
Optional: One proof hydrometer (sometimes called Customs House Hydrometer). This device helps you test the proof of your alcohol.
How to Build a moonshine still
Step 1
Place your large pot on your stove or burner securely.
Pour 2 quarts of your red table wine into your large pot.
Now place your 8 ounce collection glass in the center of your pot.
You will now place the magnet in the collection glass holding the glass in place once the ingredients start to heat up.
Step 2
Turn on your stove or burner on high, & wait for the contents to reach about 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
Check your thermometer often.
Once at this temperature, turn the burner or stove to a very low temperature.
From this point on you will need to control the rise in temperature very slowly.
Step 3
Fill your small rounded bowl with a few ice cubes and place the bowl on top of the large pot.
Make sure that your bowl has a good seal over the pot. The better the seal, the better your results will be.
Add your brick or weigh to the bowl so that the seal is better at trapping any alcohol vapour.
Step 4
Bring the temperature of your pot up slowly over the course of about a half hour.
As your wine heats up slowly, specific chemical compounds will start boiling at different temperatures.
Methyl alcohol is the first to evaporate at 148.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
Ethyl alcohol evaporates at 173 degrees Fahrenheit and water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit.
As the alcohol reaches its boiling point it will turn into vapour and once it hits the above bowl, which is filled with ice cubes, it will cool down and condense.
As it condensates, it will slowly drip down into the collection glass.
For best results make sure that your collection glass is stable and that the cold bowl on top of it has a very tight seal.
Step 5
Make sure that the wine rises in temperature very slowly.
Do not allow the wine to boil. As the water approaches 212 degrees Fahrenheit, shut off the heat and remove the collection glass. You can then throw away the wine.
In the collection glass, you will find about 2 to 4 ounces of water for about every 2 quarts of wine you cook. You can use your hygrometer to test the proof of the alcohol.
Most build a moonshine still novices can easily get above 20% proof alcohol, however it does take a good setup and some skill to reach anywhere around 80 proof which is 40% alcohol by volume.
Note
Can I stress that in no way is this article encouraging anyone to break the law when they build a moonshine still ,and always be sure that if you then use the alcohol that it is fit for consumption.

Birch Polypore --Medicinal Mushroom
The birch polypore is most commonly found growing on birch trees in northern areas throughout the world. It has most recently come to fame when found in the possession of the Ice Man, a neolithic man discovered partially exposed in a receding glacier in the Italian Alps in 1991. The birch polypore contains numerous triterpenes, betulin, betulinic acid, agaric acid and beta glucans, which give this mushroom anti-tumor and immune stimulating properties.*---Birch Polypore, as the name suggests, grows on dead or dying birch trees. It can be found in birch forests around the world.---Birch Polypore came briefly into public awareness in 1991 when the mummified remains of Oetzi the Iceman were discovered in an ice cave on the border of Italy and Austria. On his person was a pouch containing Birch Polypore. It’s generally agreed that Oetzi used the Birch Polypore to treat a parasitic infection. Eggs of the intestinal parasite Trichuris trichuria were found in his gut. [190]The traditional use of Birch Polypore extract does indeed include use as an anti-parasitic agent, as well as to stop bleeding, and as an antimicrobial agent in general. [25]--Two studies from 1997 found that certain Birch Polypore extracted compounds were anti-inflammatory, [192] and that they specifically helped reduce skin inflammation. [191]---It was found effective against Bacillus megateterium, [194] and a study in 2000 found it to contain an antibiotic compound named Piptamine. [193] Paul Stamets suggests that it be studied for effectiveness against Bacillus anthracis, more commonly known as anthrax. [134]--Another compound that is found in high concentrations in Birch Polypore is known as Betulinic Acid. Produced by the birch trees upon which this mushroom grows, Betulinic Acid gets extracted and concentrated by the Birch Polypore. A 1995 study on melanoma found that Betulinic Acid killed the malignant melanoma cells but did not harm healthy cell tissue. [195] Seven years later, another study showed that Birch Polypore extract inhibited the enzymes that promote tumor cell growth, which may help explain how Betulinic Acid works against cancer. [196]----In 2001, Betulinic Acid derivatives of Birch Polypore extract demonstrated unique antiviral effects against HIV by blocking HIV reproduction. [197]A U.S. patent on a Birch Polypore extract was filed in 2004 by world leading medicinal mushroom expert Paul Stamets, after research at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease (USAMRIID) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) concluded that his proprietary Birch Polypore extract was effective against vaccinia virus and cowpox, and non-toxic to human tissues. [134]—

Experimental evidence for the protective effects of coffee against liver fibrosis in SD rats.
J Sci Food Agric. 2010 Feb;90(3):450-5
Authors: Shin JW, Wang JH, Kang JK, Son CG
BACKGROUND: Coffee is one of the most commonly consumed beverages worldwide. Accumulating clinical evidence has shown an inverse relationship between coffee and liver cirrhosis. We investigated the protective effect of coffee against liver fibrosis and underlying molecular mechanisms using a dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-induced liver fibrosis model. RESULTS: Coffee administration significantly prevented the deterioration of body weight, organ weight, and serum biochemistry by DMN treatment. Histopathological examination revealed that necrosis/inflammation and fibrotic septa decreased significantly in coffee-treated rats compared to those treated with DMN and water. Coffee administration also significantly inhibited the accumulation of hydroxyproline (P < 0.001) and the production of malondialdehyde (P < 0.05), as well as stellate cell activation caused by DMN injection. Coffee protected the depletion of glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase in liver tissue. In addition, coffee treatment inhibited the gene expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase, transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1, and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-beta in liver tissues, and lowered the concentration of TGF-beta and PDGF-beta in liver. Coffee inhibited NO production by macrophages. CONCLUSION: Coffee exerts protective effects against liver fibrosis via antioxidant action and the suppression of fibrogenic cytokines, TGF-beta and PDGF-beta. Adults Demonstrate Modified Immune Response After Receiving Massage, Researchers Show
ScienceDaily (Sep. 9, 2010) — Researchers in Cedars-Sinai's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences have reported people who undergo massage experience measureable changes in their body's immune and endocrine response.---Although there have been previous, smaller studies about the health benefits of massage, the Cedars-Sinai study is widely believed to be the first systematic study of a larger group of healthy adults. The study is published in the October printed edition of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.----"Massage is popular in America, with almost 9 percent of adults receiving at least one massage within the past year," said Mark Rapaport, M.D., chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences. "People often seek out massage as part of a healthy lifestyle but there hasn't been much physiological proof of the body's heightened immune response following massage until now."In the study, 29 subjects received 45 minutes of Swedish massage and 24 received 45 minutes of light touch massage. Each participant underwent informed consent, a physical and mental evaluation and was deemed to be physically healthy and free of any mental disorder. Massage therapists were trained in how to deliver both Swedish and light touch using specific and identical protocols.---Prior to the massage, study participants were fitted with intravenous catheters in order to take blood samples during the study session. Then participants were asked to rest quietly for 30 minutes. Following the rest period, blood samples were collected from each person five minutes and one minute before the massage began. At the end of the 45-minute massage session, blood samples were collected at one, five, 10, 15, 30, and 60 minutes after the massage.---"This research indicates that massage doesn't only feel good, it also may be good for you," said Rapaport, the principal investigator of the study and the Polier Family Chair in Schizophrenia and Related Disorders. "More research is ahead of us but it appears that a single massage may deliver a measurable benefit."

Common OTC Drug Sends Asthma and Eczema Risks Skyrocketing
acetaminophen or, as it is ™ more commonly known, Tylenol. Raising a users risk
of liver damage.—We re not talking about isolated cases of overuse or
overdosing here. No, this is moderate to light use thats leading to these
extreme side effects. And yet they re still pushing these drugs as safeâ
even for our children! --The ads tell us that when used as directed side effects
are rare and that its safe enough for even nursing mothers to use. Clearly this
is not the case. In fact, according to scientists at the Medical Research
Institute of New Zealand 13- and 14-year olds, who take acetaminophen
just once a month, are a staggering 2.5 times
more likely to experience asthma symptoms. And those who took a dose
only once a year, didn’t fair all that
much better, with a 43% increase in asthma
symptoms. ----The study,
published online ahead of print on the American Journal of Respiratory and
Critical Care Medicine website, consisted of two written questionnaires and
one video questionnaire administered to over 300,000 kids in 50 countries. So,
in other words, this was no small study, the thing was massive, leaving little
doubt that this over-the-counter medication is a danger to our children.
---In addition to the jump in asthma symptoms,
researchers found that acetaminophen-containing
products are associated with a sharp rise in allergic reactions, ranging from
relatively mild stuffy noses and watery or itchy eyes to the much more serious
skin condition called eczema.
---But these new, and admittedly
very troubling, findings aren’t the
only things you need to be concerned about when it comes to
acetaminophen. Not by a long shot. ---With
acetaminophen in so many over-the-counter products, accidental overdoses can
easily occur when someone combines two or more of them
and can lead to liver damage and even death.
Conservative estimates say they are responsible for nearly 500 deaths from
liver failure, 56,000 emergency-room visits, and 26,000 hospitalizations every
year. --
The fact is, that despite what their manufacturers would have us believe, these
acetaminophen-containing products are miles away from safe and mild.

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors are widely used for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Several AChE inhibitors, e.g. rivastigmine, galantamine and huperzine are originating from plants, suggesting that herbs could potentially serve as sources for novel AChE inhibitors. Here, we searched potential AChE inhibitors from flavonoids, a group of naturally occurring compounds in plants or traditional Chinese medicines (TCM). Twenty-one flavonoids, covered different subclasses, were tested for their potential function in inhibiting AChE activity from the brain in vitro. Among all the tested flavonoids, galangin, a flavonol isolated from Rhizoma Alpiniae Officinarum, the rhizomes of Alpiniae officinarum (Hance.) showed an inhibitory effect on AChE activity with the highest inhibition by over 55% and an IC(50) of 120 microM and an enzyme-flavonoid inhibition constant (K(i)) of 74 microM. The results suggest that flavonoids could be potential candidates for further development of new drugs against AD.PMID: 20452337 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Physicians in Germany who have taken up Hildegard Medicine as their calling have reported that galangal is as effective as nitroglycerin, but it has absolutely no harmful side effects. These same researchers point out that Hildegard, with her mystical vision, was the first and thus far the only herbalist to note the effect of galangal as a heart pain reliever:
Whoever has heart pain and is weak in the heart should instantly eat enough galangal, and he or she will be well again
The heart symptoms are secondary to the gastric distress, which, if relieved, eases cardiac pressure. What is less well known is that these very same gases, by-products of fermentation when digestive action is not strong enough to metabolize an entire meal, circulate throughout the system causing spasms, everything from hiccups to sharp cardiac pains. What carminative spices do is neutralize the gases so that they cease to exist! By doing this, the many symptoms of the invisible but gusty winds subside.- Besides aiding digestion and relieving gastric distress, it is useful in alleviating the dizziness and nausea associated with morning sickness as well as motion sickness. Its antifungal and antibacterial properties have been found effective in treatment of candida albicans and even the anthrax pathogen.*
3.1.4.To
treat cold pain in the abdomen due to stomach-cold:
Like other members of the ginger family, galangal is warming and comforting to
the digestion. Galangal has a pleasantly aromatic and mildly spicy taste, and is
suitable for all conditions where the central areas of the body need greater
warmth. Galangal was introduced into Europe in about the 9th century. The mystic
Hildegard of Bingen regarded it literally as the "spice of life," given by God
to ward off ill health.
This herb is always used in mutual enforcement with blast-fried ginger, e.g., Er
Jiang Wan.
3.1.5.To treat distending pain in the abdomen due to
stomach-cold and stagnation of liver-qi:
This herb is mostly used together with nutgrass flatsedge rhizome (Rhizoma
Cyperi) in order to soothe the liver, regulate the circulation of qi, dispel
cold and relieve pain, e.g., Liang Fu Wan.
3.1.6.To treat vomiting due to stomach-cold:
This herb can be used together with dangshen (Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae),
tuckahoe (Poria Cocos), largehead atractylodes rhizome (Rhizoma Atractylodis
Macrocephalae), etc. 4. Nutritional Value:
Eating five daily servings of vegetables and fruits lowers the chances of
cancer. A recent study found that eating nine or ten daily servings of
vegetables and fruits, combined with three servings of low-fat dairy products,
were effective in lowering blood pressure.
3.1.7.Chinese medicine:
In traditional Chinese herbal medicine, galangal is a warming
herb used for abdominal pain, vomiting, and hiccups, as
well as for diarrhea due to internal cold. When used for hicupps,
galangal is combined with codonopsis and Ju ling.
3.1.8.Indian tradition:
In India and southwestern Asia, galangal is considered
stomachic, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, and a
nervine tonic. Galangal is used in the treatment of hiccups, dyspepsia, stomach
pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and intermittent fever.
3.1.9.Western herbalism:
Galangal was introduced into Europe by Arabian physicians well over a thousand
years ago. In line with the Chinese and Indian herbal traditions, galangal is
mainly used in the West for gas, indigestion,
vomiting, and stomach pain. An infusion
can be used to alleviate painful canker sores and sore gums. Galangal
has long been recommended as a treatment for seasickness, which is not
surprising given the well-established ability of its relative ginger to relieve
motion sickness.
3.1.10.Candidiasis:
Galangal can be used with other antifungal herbs as
part of a regimen to treat intestinal candidiasis.
Antibacterial:In Chinese research trials, a
decoction of galangal
had an
antibacterial action against a number of pathogens, including anthrax.
Antifungal:Research indicates that galangal is distinctly effective against
Candida albicans.
In Brazilian herbal medicine the essential oil of the leaf is used for high blood pressure and as a heart tonic. In other parts of the world the plant is considered balsamic, diuretic, and stomachic and traditionally used for colds and flu, fevers, flatulence, stomach problems and indigestion

GATES FOUNDATION INVESTS IN MONSANTO Both will profit at expense of small-scale African farmers
Seattle, WA – Farmers and civil society organizations around the world are outraged by the recent discovery of further connections between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and agribusiness titan Monsanto. Last week, a financial website published the Gates Foundation’s investment portfolio, including 500,000 shares of Monsanto stock with an estimated worth of $23.1 million purchased in the second quarter of 2010 (see the filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission). This marks a substantial increase from its previous holdings, valued at just over $360,000 (see the Foundation’s 2008 990 Form). --“The Foundation’s direct investment in Monsanto is problematic on two primary levels,” said Dr. Phil Bereano, University of Washington Professor Emeritus and recognized expert on genetic engineering. “First, Monsanto has a history of blatant disregard for the interests and well-being of small farmers around the world, as well as an appalling environmental track record. The strong connections to Monsanto cast serious doubt on the Foundation’s heavy funding of agricultural development in Africa and purported goal of alleviating poverty and hunger among small-scale farmers. Second, this investment represents an enormous conflict of interests.”--Monsanto has already negatively impacted agriculture in African countries. For example, in South Africa in 2009, Monsanto’s genetically modified maize failed to produce kernels and hundreds of farmers were devastated. According to Mariam Mayet, environmental attorney and director of the Africa Centre for Biosafety in Johannesburg, some farmers suffered up to an 80% crop failure[U1]. While Monsanto compensated the large-scale farmers to whom it directly sold the faulty product, it gave nothing to the small-scale farmers to whom it had handed out free sachets of seeds. “When the economic power of Gates is coupled with the irresponsibility of Monsanto, the outlook for African smallholders is not very promising,” said Mayet. Monsanto’s aggressive patenting practices have also monopolized control over seed in ways that deny farmers control over their own harvest, going so far as to sue—and bankrupt—farmers for “patent infringement.”-News of the Foundation’s recent Monsanto investment has confirmed the misgivings of many farmers and sustainable agriculture advocates in Africa, among them the Kenya Biodiversity Coalition, who commented, “We have long suspected that the founders of AGRA—the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—had a long and more intimate affair with Monsanto.” Indeed, according to Travis English, researcher with AGRA Watch, “The Foundation’s ownership of Monsanto stock is emblematic of a deeper, more long-standing involvement with the corporation, particularly in Africa.” In 2008, AGRA Watch, a project of the Seattle-based organization Community Alliance for Global Justice, uncovered many linkages between the Foundation’s grantees and Monsanto. For example, some grantees (in particular about 70% of grantees in Kenya) of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA)—considered by the Foundation to be its “African face”—work directly with Monsanto on agricultural development projects. Other prominent links include high-level Foundation staff members who were once senior officials for Monsanto, such as Rob Horsch, formerly Monsanto Vice President of International Development Partnerships and current Senior Program Officer of the Gates Agricultural Development Program.--Transnational corporations like Monsanto have been key collaborators with the Foundation and AGRA’s grantees in promoting the spread of industrial agriculture on the continent. This model of production relies on expensive inputs such as chemical fertilizers, genetically modified seeds, and herbicides. Though this package represents enticing market development opportunities for the private sector, many civil society organizations contend it will lead to further displacement of farmers from the land, an actual increase in hunger, and migration to already swollen cities unable to provide employment opportunities. In the words of a representative from the Kenya Biodiversity Coalition, “AGRA is poison for our farming systems and livelihoods. Under the philanthropic banner of greening agriculture, AGRA will eventually eat away what little is left of sustainable small-scale farming in Africa.”---A 2008 report initiated by the World Bank and the UN, the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD), promotes alternative solutions to the problems of hunger and poverty that emphasize their social and economic roots. The IAASTD concluded that small-scale agroecological farming is more suitable for the third world than the industrial agricultural model favored by Gates and Monsanto. In a summary of the key findings of IAASTD, the Pesticide Action Network North America (PANNA) emphasizes the report’s warning that “continued reliance on simplistic technological fixes—including transgenic crops—will not reduce persistent hunger and poverty and could exacerbate environmental problems and worsen social inequity.” Furthermore, PANNA explains, “The Assessment’s 21 key findings suggest that small-scale agroecological farming may offer one of the best means to feed the hungry while protecting the planet.”--The Gates Foundation has been challenged in the past for its questionable investments; in 2007, the L.A. Times exposed the Foundation for investing in its own grantees and for its “holdings in many companies that have failed tests of social responsibility because of environmental lapses, employment discrimination, disregard for worker rights, or unethical practices.” The Times chastised the Foundation for what it called “blind-eye investing,” with at least 41% of its assets invested in “companies that countered the foundation’s charitable goals or socially-concerned philosophy.”---Although the Foundation announced it would reassess its practices, it decided to retain them. As reported by the L.A. Times, chief executive of the Foundation Patty Stonesifer defended their investments, stating, “It would be naïve…to think that changing the foundation’s investment policy could stop the human suffering blamed on the practices of companies in which it invests billions of dollars.” This decision is in direct contradiction to the Foundation’s official “Investment Philosophy”, which, according to its website, “defined areas in which the endowment will not invest, such as companies whose profit model is centrally tied to corporate activity that [Bill and Melinda] find egregious. This is why the endowment does not invest in tobacco stocks.” More recently, the Foundation has come under fire in its own hometown. This week, 250 Seattle residents sent postcards expressing their concern that the Foundation’s approach to agricultural development, rather than reducing hunger as pledged, would instead “increase farmer debt, enrich agribusiness corporations like Monsanto and Syngenta, degrade the environment, and dispossess small farmers.” [U2]In addition to demanding that the Foundation instead fund “socially and ecologically appropriate practices determined locally by African farmers and scientists” and support African food sovereignty, they urged the Foundation to cut all ties to Monsanto and the biotechnology industry.--AGRA Watch, a program of Seattle-based Community Alliance for Global Justice, supports African initiatives and programs that foster farmers’ self-determination and food sovereignty. AGRA Watch also supports public engagement in fighting genetic engineering and exploitative agricultural policies, and demands transparency and accountability on the part of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and AGRA[U3].

The goal of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs) used to treat Alzheimer's patients is an improvement in cholinergic transmission. While currently available AChEIs have limited success, a huge impediment to the development of newer ones is access to the relevant brain areas. Promnesic, anti-amnesic and AChEI properties were identified in a standardized ethanol extract from Ptychopetalum olacoides (POEE), a medicinal plant favored by the elderly in Amazon communities. The purpose of this study was to provide conclusive evidence that orally given POEE induces AChE inhibition in brain areas relevant to cognition. Histochemistry experiments confirmed that the anticholinesterase compound(s) present in POEE are orally bioavailable, inducing meaningful AChE inhibition in the hippocampus CA1 (â¼33%) and CA3 (â¼20%), and striatum (â¼17%). Ellman's colorimetric analysis revealed that G1 and G4 AChE isoforms activities were markedly inhibited (66 and 72%, respectively) in hippocampus and frontal cortex (50 and 63%, respectively), while G4 appeared to be selectively inhibited (72%) in the striatum. Western blotting showed that POEE did not induce significant changes in the AChE immunocontent suggesting that its synthesis is not extensively modified. This study provides definitive proof of meaningful anticholinesterase activity compatible with the observed promnesic and anti-amnesic effects of POEE in mice, reaffirming the potential of this extract for treating neurodegenerative conditions where a hypofunctioning cholinergic neurotransmission is prominent. Adequate assessment of the safety and efficacy of this extract and/or its isolated active compound(s) are warranted.---PMID: 20833520 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Tightened muzzle on scientists is 'Orwellian'
Documents reveal federal researchers, whose work is financed by taxpayers, need approval from Ottawa before speaking with media
By Margaret Munro, Postmedia NewsSeptember 13, 2010
Andrew Weaver, a climatologist at the University of Victoria, says the public has a right to know what scientists are discovering and learning. The Harper government has tightened the muzzle on federal scientists, going so far as to control when and what they can say about floods at the end of the last ice age. Natural Resources Canada (NRC) scientists were told this spring they need "pre-approval" from Minister Christian Paradis' office to speak with journalists. Their "media lines" also need ministerial approval, say documents obtained by Postmedia News through access-to-information legislation. The documents say the "new" rules went into force in March and reveal how they apply to not only to contentious issues including the oilsands, but benign subjects such as floods that occurred 13,000 years ago. They also give a glimpse of how Canadians are being cut off from scientists whose work is financed by taxpayers, critics say, and is often of significant public interest -- be it about fish stocks, genetically modified crops or mercury pollution in the Athabasca River. "It's Orwellian," says Andrew Weaver, a climatologist at the University of Victoria. The public, he says, has a right to know what federal scientists are discovering and learning. Scientists at NRC, many of them planetary experts, study everything from seabeds to melting glaciers. They have long been able to discuss their research, until the rules changed this spring. "We have new media interview procedures that require pre-approval of certain types of interview requests by the minister's office," wrote Judy Samoil, NRC's western regional communications manager, in a March 24 e-mail to colleagues. The policy applies to "high-profile" issues such as "climate change, oilsands" and when "the reporter is with an international or national media organization (such as the CBC or the Canwest paper chain)," she wrote. The Canwest papers are now part of Postmedia Network Inc. Samoil later elaborated, saying "the regional communications managers were advised of this change a couple of weeks ago." The documents show the new rules being so broadly applied that one scientist was not permitted to discuss a study in a major research journal without "pre-approval" from political staff in Paradis' office. NRC scientist Scott Dallimore coauthored the study, published in the journal Nature on April 1, about a colossal flood that swept across northern Canada 13,000 years ago, when massive ice dams gave way at the end of the last ice age. The study was considered so newsworthy that two British universities issued releases to alert the international media. --It was, however, deemed so sensitive in Ottawa that Dallimore, who works at NRC's laboratories outside Victoria, was told he had to wait for clearance from the minister's office. ---- Dallimore tried to tell the department's communications managers the flood study was anything but politically sensitive. "This is a blue sky science paper," he said noting: "There are no anticipated links to minerals, energy or anthropogenic climate change." But the bureaucrats in Ottawa insisted. "We will have to get the minister's office approval before going ahead with this interview," Patti Robson, the department's media relations manager, wrote in an e-mail after a reporter from Postmedia News (then Canwest News Service) approached Dallimore. Robson asked Dallimore to provide the reporter's questions and "the proposed responses," saying: "We will send it up to MO (minister's office) for approval." Robson said interviews about the flood study needed ministerial approval for two reasons: the inquiring reporter represented a "national news outlet" and the "subject has wide-ranging implications." The documents show several communications managers, policy advisers, political staff and senior officials were involved drafting and vetting "media lines" on the ancient flood study. Dallimore finally got clearance to talk to reporters from Margaux Stastny, director of communication in Paradis' office, on March 31, a week after NRC communications branch was told the study was appearing in Nature, and two days after reporters began approaching Dallimore for interviews. By then, the reporters' deadlines had passed and they had already completed their stories about the ancient flood. Canwest News Service, CBC, ABC, Reuters and other organizations based their reports on interviews with co-authors of the study from universities outside Canada that responded to interview requests promptly. This effectively "muzzled" Dallimore by not allowing him to do timely interviews, says Weaver, at the University of Victoria, who says the incident shows how "ridiculous" the situation has got in Ottawa. "If you can't get access to a nice, feel-good science story about flooding at the end of last glaciation, can you imagine trying to get access to scientists with information about cadmium and mercury in the Athabasca River? Absolutely impossible," says Weaver, in reference to growing controversy over contaminants downstream from Alberta's oilsands. Environment Canada and Health Canada now tightly control media access to researchers and orchestrate interviews that are approved. Environment Canada has even produced "media lines" for federal scientists to stick to when discussing climate studies they have coauthored with Weaver and are based on research paid for through his university grants. "There is no question that there is an orchestrated campaign at the federal level to make sure that their scientists can't communicate to the public about what they do," says Weaver, adding that the crackdown is seriously undermining morale in federal labs. "Science is about generating new knowledge and communicating it to others."

Why The
Cholesterol Causes Heart Disease Dogma still Persist
By Dr. Paul J. Rosch, M.D., M.A., F.A.C.P.
It must seem curious to some that the lipid hypothesis is still regarded as gospel by physicians despite overwhelming proof that it is flawed, if not fully fallacious. For example, a scholarly review published in Science several years ago showed that cholesterol levels up to 240 were normal and that women with a cholesterol over 240 had a decreased risk for coronary deaths. Belief in this lipid doctrine was originally based on experiments in which cholesterol was force fed to herbivorous animals that do not eat meat, and the results are not relevant to humans[U4]. --Ancel Keys subsequently demonstrated a straight-line relationship between fat intake and deaths from heart disease in six countries, as well as a close correlation with cholesterol levels. This was so convincing that his views and suggestions became official NIH ( National Institutes of Health ) policy and a massive campaign to lower cholesterol was launched in 1961. The problem was that while Keys had 22 countries to choose from, he "cherry picked" only those that had both high fat intake and coronary death rates to support his theories. Had he analyzed the data on all countries, he would have come to a very different conclusion. --For example, Mexico, which had the same fat consumption as Finland, was not included because coronary mortality was seven times higher in Finland. Also omitted were Sweden, Germany, France and Israel, where the higher the saturated fat and cholesterol intake, the lower the incidence of coronary deaths.--This demonization of fats was magnified and perpetuated by the cholesterol cartel of manufacturers of cholesterol lowering products, low fat foods, lipid testing equipment and others who stood to reap huge profits. It reached its peak with the advent of statins which quickly became and remain the widest used and most profitable drugs ever. Pharmaceutical company efforts were aided and abetted by the FDA, Congress and other regulatory agencies, prestigious academic institutions, organizations and physicians, many of whom were handsomely rewarded for their support and endorsements. --Medical journals as well as the lay media were reluctant to publish anything that promoted a contrary view for fear of losing lucrative advertising revenue. Any opponents were viciously persecuted, as happened with Kilmer McCully, who demonstrated that lowering homocysteine might be more important than lowering cholesterol to prevent heart attacks, and was not only much safer, but considerably less costly than statins. --Like a deep earlobe crease, pot belly, premature vertex baldness and hundreds of other items, an elevated cholesterol is statistically associated with an increased incidence of heart attacks. However association never proves causation. --It would be much more accurate to refer to these as risk markers rather than risk factors, which implies a causal relationship. To get around this, statins are advertised as reducing the risk of heart attacks by implying that lowering cholesterol will result in a corresponding reduction in heart attack rates.--What the ads don't say is that this is relative risk, not absolute risk, which is quite different. Nor do they indicate how many people need to be treated for one person to benefit. For example, your doctor tells you that there is a new statin drug with no side effects and that a study showed that if you take it every day for the next five years your risk of heart attack will be reduced by over one third, which sounds appealing. --The study actually found a 34% reduction in relative risk. What you are not told is that after five years, 2.7% of patients taking this drug had a heart attack compared to 4.1% taking a placebo, which is an absolute risk reduction of only 1.4 percent, which is much less attractive. In addition, seventy-one people would have to take this every day for five years to prevent one person from having a heart attack, but it is not known if that person will be you.--One of the earliest attempts to deceive the public by using relative risk was the NIH sponsored Coronary Primary Prevention Trial, which claimed that in men with high cholesterol, taking cholestyramine ( Questran ) would lower cholesterol by 28% and result in a 50% reduction in major coronary events after seven years. --Although these goals were not met, it was triumphantly reported that the study showed cholestyramine reduced the risk of coronary events by 19%, and it was recommended for everyone. But 19% was the relative risk based on estimated cholesterol lowering. The actual risk of a coronary event was 1.1%, and for fatal heart attacks, the risk difference was only 0.6%. --Furthermore the study dealt only with a lipid disorder that affects less than one in five hundred, and a very small fraction of the total number of deaths due to heart attacks. There was nothing to suggest that lowering cholesterol would be beneficial for men in other age groups or women of any age. There was also no indication that cholestyramine would be safe, or even tolerated. Bile acids that are manufactured from cholesterol aid in the digestion of fats, and cholestyramine binds to bile acids so they can no longer perform this function. Because the drug is indigestible, it and the bile acids are excreted, and the gall bladder has to make more bile by drawing cholesterol from the blood. The study was conducted in 3,800 men with primary hypercholesterolemia, a rare disorder characterized by extremely high blood cholesterol. --It was also limited to those in the 40-60 heart attack prone age group to improve their results. Some men stopped taking the foul tasting 4 to 5 packets of cholestyramine after one or two days, many complained of severe constipation or other gastrointestinal complaints due to the lack of bile acids and most were unable to take the full 24 grams daily, so that relatively few stayed on the required regimen for seven and a half years. With respect to safety, cholestyramine interferes with the absorption of fat soluble vitamins and numerous common drugs, including Coumadin, digoxin, Inderal, phenobarbital, thiazide diuretics and thyroid medications. More importantly, little was mentioned about the 21 cases and 8 deaths from gastrointestinal cancer in those taking the drug, compared to 11 cases and just 1 death in the control group. Small wonder that statins seemed to be a much better option, although their significant side effects have also been swept under the rug. Perhaps the most egregious abuses have come from statin ads, especially on TV. These consistently cite relative risk reduction statistics from a specific demographic group, such as patients who have had a heart attack, and imply that they will prevent heart attacks in men, women and children of any age. Originally, advertisements were required to state that statins have not been shown to prevent heart attacks, and even though this was in very small type that was difficult to read, drug companies successfully campaigned to have this removed. -- Statins do not provide benefits in senior citizens or women of any age. More importantly, it is increasingly clear from JUPITER and other studies that statin benefits are unrelated to their cholesterol lowering effects and are more likely due to anti-inflammatory or antithrombotic effects. As I pointed out almost a decade ago in the Journal of The American Medical Association, "It might be advisable to find the minimum statin dosage that provides cardioprotection. As with aspirin, this may be much lower than for other indications."

(OMNS September 15, 2010) The very first paper in the Puerto Rico Health Sciences Journal's special issue on cancer condemns vitamin C therapy for cancer. (1) Furthermore, that Journal has refused publication of a letter correcting the article's numerous errors. We have therefore decided to provide OMNS readers with that rebuttal letter, below:--It is entirely false to assert that we do not know how much vitamin C is effective against cancer. Indeed, the opposite is true: we do know, and we are failing our duty to patients when we fail to recommend vitamin C as adjunctive cancer therapy.---There are many controlled studies that demonstrate that vitamin C is indeed effective against cancer, improving length of life and quality of life. Positive studies have typically used between 10,000 and 100,000 mg/day intravenously. As Dr. Fernando Cabanillas correctly noted, success with 10,000 mg/day by IV was initially reported back in the 1970s by Cameron and Pauling. But Dr. Cabanillas has then omitted some key information. It is important to note that the negative, much-touted Moertel-Mayo studies were not true replications of Cameron and Pauling's work, as A) they used oral doses only, and B) vitamin C was discontinued at the first sign of disease progression. Would we administer injectable chemotherapy orally, and then discontinue chemotherapy if the patient worsened? No, we would administer it properly, and stay with it.-- Dr. Cabanillas also neglects to mention that Pauling and Cameron's work was promptly confirmed, first at Japan's Saga University by Murata et al. Dr. Murata employed over 30,000 mg per day and had even better results with terminally ill cancer patients. (2) In the words of Dr. Louis Lasagna of the University of Rochester Medical School, "It seems indefensible not to at least try substantial doses of vitamin C in these patients." (3) And again contrary to Dr. Cabanillas' statements, many clinical reports from orthomolecular (nutritional) physicians including Dr. Hugh Riordan and colleagues do in fact indicate that IV vitamin C is effective. Says Dr. James A. Jackson, "Dr. Riordan's IV protocol (4) starts out at 15,000 mg intravenous ascorbate and slowly goes up. It is given twice a week. The IVs are continued until the post-IV vitamin C levels reach what our research established as the killing level of 350 to 400 mg/dL. This has been verified. (5) Once this level is reached, the frequency of the IV may be reduced to once a week, or to one or two times a month."---There is no absolutely reliable cure for cancer[U1]. Conventional chemotherapy contributes only 2.1% to five year cancer survival in the USA. (6) But with vitamin C, we are on the right track. It has been reported since McCormick in the 1950s (7,8,9) that cancer patients invariably have abnormally low levels of the vitamin. Vitamin C is vital to a cancer patient. What is dangerous is vitamin deficiency. What is even more dangerous is warning people off the very therapy that may help them, and frequently has been shown to make a significant difference. Precisely how significant remains to be seen. But there are intriguing indications. Linus Pauling took 18,000 mg/day of vitamin C. Pauling died from cancer in 1994. Dr. Charles Moertel of the Mayo Clinic, critic of vitamin C, died of cancer the same year. Moertel was 66. Pauling was 93[U2]. Did vitamin C fail to cure Pauling's cancer? If so, then not taking vitamin C failed to cure Moertel's. Pauling lived 27 years longer with ascorbate than Moertel lived without it.

Vitamin C does not interfere with conventional cancer treatment
Victor Marcial, M.D., an oncologist in Puerto Rico, says:
"We studied patients with advanced cancer (stage 4). 40 patients received 40,000-75,000 mg intravenously several times a week. These are patients that have not responded to other treatments. The initial tumor response rate was achieved in 75% of patients, defined as a 50% reduction or more in tumor size. . . As a radiation oncologist, I also give radiation therapy. Vitamin C has two effects. It increases the beneficial effects of radiation and chemotherapy and decreases the adverse effects. But this is not a subtle effect, is not 15-20%. It's a dramatic effect. Once you start using IV vitamin C, the effect is so dramatic that it is difficult to go back to not using it."
Ralph Campbell, M.D., a Montana pediatrician, writes:
"More and more oncologists are admitting that a course of chemo disrupts the immune system to the point of allowing more cancer down the pike. It would seem reasonable for post-chemo patients to enter a regimen of high antioxidants intake as soon as they can."
Abram Hoffer, M.D., Ph.D., explains why vitamin C does not interfere with chemotherapy at http://www.doctoryourself.com/chemo.html

- Dispersants, Bacteria and Illness in the Gulf
Ocean Springs, MS -- A grandmother made me rethink all the bio-remediation hype. The "naturally-occurring oil-eating bacteria" have been newsworthy of late as they are supposedly going to come to the rescue of President Obama and BP and make good on their very premature statement that "the oil is gone." We were talking about subsurface oil in the Gulf when she said matter-of-factly, "The bacteria are running amok with the dispersants." What? "Those oil-eating bacteria -- I think they're running amok and causing skin rashes." My mind reeled. Could we all have missed something so simple? The idea was crazy but, in the context of the Gulf situation -- an outbreak of mysterious persistent rashes from southern Louisiana across to just north of Tampa, Florida, coincident with BP's oil and chemical release, it seemed suddenly worthy of investigating. I first heard about the rash from Sheri Allen in Mobile, Alabama. Allen wrote of red welts and blisters on her legs after "splashing and wading on the shoreline" of Mobile Bay with her two dogs on May 8. She reported that "hundreds of dead fish" washed up on the same beach over the following two days. This was much too early for the summer sun to have warmed the water to the point of oxygen depletion, but not too early for dispersants and dispersed oil to be mixed into the Gulf's water mass. By early July, Allen's rash had healed, leaving black bruises and scarring. ---A mysterious persistent skin rash has occurred across the Gulf, coincident with BP's release of oil and chemical dispersants. Mobile, Alabama, resident Sheri Allen was one of the first to report its occurrence in early May. Sheri Allen's rash had largely healed by July 2, leaving bruises and scarring, similar to other reports across the Gulf. (Photo: Sheri Allen)--Other people -- both residents and visitors to the Gulf Coast -- wrote of similar rashes or other skin problems like peeling palms. The rashes have been diagnosed as scabies and staph infections, including MRSA, the potentially lethal Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Most cases lingered for months, as the rash did not respond well to antibiotics, steroid creams, or steroid shots.
Medical doctors are diagnosing skin rashes on Gulf visitors and residents
alike as scabies and staph infections, including
MRSA (this photo, identity
protected). The rashes resist prescribed treatments and often reoccur for
months. Normal
looking scabies contrasts sharply with the Gulf casesThat should have been a
clue that maybe the primary cause was not biological, but chemical. A secondary
biological infection might clear up with antibiotic treatment, but then keep
reoccurring because the primary chemical illness had not been treated. --Retired
Registered Nurse Allison Schmidt agrees. Referring to Allen's case, she said, "I
can say without hesitation that these skin rashes have nothing to do with
scabies. Scabies is a parasite, which causes a skin
infection and is extremely contagious. It spreads from person to person by
direct skin contact or by wearing an article of clothing worn by an infected
person." Schmidt said, "If this were scabies you would see entire
families infected and NOT just a single family member."---Another clue to the
real cause of the mystery rash is its prevalence across the entire oil-impacted
Gulf. Something in the water or air, or both, could explain this. While public
officials and BP claim that dispersant use was halted in May for Corexit 9527A
and on July 19 for Corexit 9500A,
evidence collected by Gulf residents has shown that
dispersants are being used in nearshore and inland waters, close to highly
populated areas across the Gulf. Further, oil and the Corexit marker have been
found in
air and inland
water. ---Despite denial by public officials and BP, evidence mounts of
continued dispersant use in inland and nearshore waters near populated areas
across the Gulf. Private contractor in Carolina Skiff with tank of Corexit
dispersant, August 10, south of Pass Christian Harbor, Mississippi, 9:30 AM--I
have heard from Gulf residents and visitors who
developed a rash or peeling palms from contact with Gulf water, including such
activities as swimming or wading, getting splashed, handling oiled material or
dead animals without gloves, and shucking crabs from the recently opened Gulf
fisheries. I have also heard from people who developed the same symptoms after
contact with Gulf air by wiping an oily film off their
airplane's leading edges after flying over
the Gulf (absorbent pad tested positive for oil) or swimming in
outdoor pools, or splashing in puddles,
after it rained. Outraged by the unprecedented release of oil and
toxic chemicals in the Gulf, Nurse Schmidt and Mike McDowell developed a
project to test Gulf
rainwater for harmful chemicals. Schmidt said, "We are convinced the
chemicals used in the Gulf to help disperse oil have evaporated and will
eventually come down mixed with the rain." Another clue, more like a
condemnation, is that NOAA and EPA decided to use dispersants in the Gulf
without considering what harm the chemicals and dispersed oil might do to
people, specifically, the general public. Dr. Sylvia Earle, former chief
scientist of NOAA, and other scientists,
criticized the agencies' decision, in part, based on concern about harm to
human health. Other scientists have also criticized the agencies' decision.
Citing the National Academy of Sciences, a Texas Tech University
professor testified in Congress that the chemicals break down cell walls,
making organisms (including people) more susceptible to oil[U3]
The professor called the
Gulf an "eco-toxicological experiment," which is inexcusable, because OSHA has
known about
harm from solvent exposure since at least 1987. Don't these federal agencies
talk amongst themselves --
or with
others?---Which all brings me back to the grandmother. After talking with
her, I've been reading about bacteria, and I now think the Great Gulf Experiment
is going very badly for humans. One can only wonder about the rest of the
ecosystem.--There are two distinct types of bacteria based on the structure of
their cell walls. Gram-positive bacteria have a single-membrane cell wall, while
Gram-negative bacteria have a double-membrane cell wall.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
bacteria are "Gram-positive," while the oil-eating bacteria are Gram-negative.
But! A component of the double-membrane cell wall
structure of Gram-negative bacteria can irritate human skin, causing
inflammation and activating the immune system. In other words,
oil-eating bacteria, just because they are Gram-negative, can cause skin rashes.
In the case of Alcanivorax borkumensis, the
reaction can erupt on the skin
like MRSA infections. To make
things a little scarier, some of the oil-eating bacteria
have been genetically modified, or otherwise
bioengineered, to better eat the oil -- including
Alcanivorax borkumensis and some of the
Pseudomonas. Oil-eating bacteria produce bio-films. According to Nurse
Schmidt, studies have found that
bio-films are rapidly colonized (p. 97) by other Gram-negative bacteria --
including those known to infect humans.
Scientists anticipated early on that the Gulf leak would cause
populations of oil-eating bacteria to soar.[U4]
Still, infections are not likely in healthy people. However, exposure to oil
weakens a person's immune system function, as does the mental stress of dealing
with disaster trauma. And then there are people who are more at risk than others
to bacterial infections, especially when first challenged with oil and solvent
exposure. This includes children, people with
cystic fibrosis or asthma, and African Americans (who are prone to blood
disorders), to name a few.--Is this the perfect storm -- an exploding
population of opportunistic Gram-negative bacteria (some natural, some not),
millions of gallons of food (oil) for the bacteria, and a susceptible population
of stressed-out people? --Perhaps. If the outbreak of skin rashes across the
Gulf is any indication, the health care providers, media, and Congress ought to
be taking a hard look at this question. Further, people ought to be connecting
the dots to illnesses that surfaced in Exxon
Valdez spill responders and to the illnesses occurring now in
Michigan residents coping with the
Enbridge oil pipeline spill. In the Gulf, Nurse Schmidt believes:
This is like a major bacterial storm. It could be the reason we are seeing a
variance of symptoms in different individuals. In some people, we see
respiratory complications, while in others we see skin or GI symptoms. I think
it is due to a multitude of colonized bacteria -- which may have been triggered
by BP's disaster. -The nurse and I think the grandmother is onto something.

What are you to do if you have a heart attack While you are alone If you've already received this, It means people care about you. The Johnson City Medical Center staff actually Discovered this and did an in-depth study On it in our ICU. The two individuals that discovered this then did An article on it, had it published and have had it incorporated into ACLS and CPR classes. It is very true and has and does work. It is called cough CPR A cardiologist says it's the truth If everyone who gets this sends it to 10 people, You can bet that we'll save at least one life. It could save your life! Let's say it's 6:15 p.m. And you're driving home (alone of course), after an usually hard day on the job You're really tired, upset and frustrated. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain In your chest that starts to radiate out Into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital Nearest your home. Unfortunately you don't know if you'll be Able to make it that far What can you do? You've been trained in CPR But the guy that taught the course didn't tell Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, this article seemed to be in order. Without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, Has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each Cough, and the cough must be deep And prolonged, as when producing sputum From deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated About every two seconds without let up Until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and Keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital. Tell as many other people as possible about this, it could save their lives! Watercress May 'Turn Off' Breast Cancer Signal
ScienceDaily (Sep. 14, 2010) — New scientific research from the University of Southampton has revealed that a plant compound in watercress may have the ability to suppress breast cancer cell development by 'turning off' a signal in the body and thereby starving the growing tumour of essential blood and oxygen.--The research, unveiled at a press conference Sept. 14, 2010, shows that the watercress compound is able to interfere with the function of a protein which plays a critical role in cancer development.[U5] As tumours develop they rapidly outgrow their existing blood supply so they send out signals which make surrounding normal tissues grow new blood vessels into the tumour which feed them oxygen and nutrients. The research, led by Professor Graham Packham of the University of Southampton, shows that the plant compound (called phenylethyl isothiocyanate) found in watercress can block this process, by interfering with and 'turning off' in the function of a protein called Hypoxia Inducible Factor (HIF). Professor Packham, a molecular oncologist at the University of Southampton, comments: "The research takes an important step towards understanding the potential health benefits of this crop since it shows that eating watercress may interfere with a pathway that has already been tightly linked to cancer development.---"Knowing the risk factors for cancer is a key goal and studies on diet are an important part of this. However, relatively little work is being performed in the UK on the links between the foods we eat and cancer development." Working with Barbara Parry, Senior Research Dietician at the Winchester and Andover Breast Unit, Professor Packham performed a pilot study in which a small group of breast cancer survivors, underwent a period of fasting before eating 80g of watercress (a cereal bowl full) and then providing a series of blood samples over the next 24 hours. The research team was able to detect significant levels of the plant compound PEITC in the blood of the participants following the watercress meal, and most importantly, could show that the function of the protein HIF was also measurably affected in the blood cells of the women. The two studies, which have been published in the British Journal of Nutrition and Biochemical Pharmacology, provide new insight into the potential anti-cancer effects of watercress, although more work still needs to be done to determine the direct impact watercress has on decreasing cancer risk. Watercress Alliance member Dr Steve Rothwell says: "We are very excited by the outcome of Professor Packham's work, which builds on the body of research which supports the idea that watercress may have an important role to play in limiting cancer development." A summary of the research has been accepted for inclusion in the Breast Cancer Research Conference which is taking place in Nottingham from 15 to 17 September.Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the western world and currently affects approximately 1 in 9 women during their lifetime. --Story Source: The above story is reprinted (with editorial adaptations by ScienceDaily staff) from materials provided by University of Southampton.Journal References: Sharifah S. [U1]What they are saying here is that because cancer can be treated cured and healed does not mean it will not comeback or that it will always be free of it---living in the earth will explain why we need it so With GMO foods and SOY and MSG and then other things you may come across oor even a environment where you hate being in butttt you endure-- and as a result you accumalate a toxin or a chemical that goes in and infects the system--so then there may be more to dealing with the cancer and beating it
[U2]It Appears that this Vitamin C at a high dose 18 grams will sustain you and with out you live shorter haha
[U3]VITAMIN A will be needed and to USE VITAMIN E SOY FREE AND CANOLA OIL FREE- Avoid GMO Fats at all cost the canola will make the skin thinner as a result of it being a metal penetrent
use as well Butter--GHEE Palm and COCONUT oils \again this will increase the fat protection you will need
[U4]DEMOCIDE--where a Country perfroms it's on act of terrorism on it's populace---in this case BIO WARFARE
[U5]Interesting --the cihinese when consuming soy ( about 1-2 times a month if that unless they have neen culturally crushed with the western way of eating)will use watercress or seaweed the very next day since they both block estrogen as a result of iodine in the plants

Pollution Takes Its Toll on the Heart
ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2010) — The fine particles of pollution that hang in the air can increase the risk for sudden cardiac arrest, according to a new study conducted by a team from Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center and The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. --Robert A. Silverman, MD, and his colleagues have been interested in the effects of ambient fine particulate matter on a number of medical conditions, including cardiovascular disease and asthma. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) keeps tabs on air pollution through dozens of strategically placed pollution sensors in cities and towns throughout the country. This data allowed the researchers to collect data on average 24-hour values of small particulates and other gaseous pollutants around New York City during the summer (when pollution is higher) and winter months. They then compared that data to the 8,216 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests that occurred between 2002 and 2006. Most people in the throes of a cardiac arrest do not survive in time for emergency medical service teams to save them. --What they were looking for was simple: Were there more cardiac arrests on high pollution days than on lower pollution days? In the American Journal of Epidemiology, Dr. Silverman and his fellow researchers reported that for a 10ug/m3 rise in small particle air pollution, there was a four-to-10 percent increase in the number of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests. The current EPA standard is 35ug/m3. The effect was much greater in the summer months, said Dr. Silverman, an associate professor of emergency medicine and director of research at LIJ's Department of Emergency Medicine. The scientists also evaluated levels of ozone, nitric oxide, sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide, but these showed a much weaker relationship. Analysis of the data from the death records and the 33 EPA monitors was conducted in collaboration with Kazuhiko Ito, PhD, an assistant professor at the Nelson Institute of Environmental Medicine at New York University School of Medicine and investigators from the New York City Fire Department, John Freese, MD, Brad J. Kaufman, MD, David J. Prezant, MD, and James Braun.---"Small particulate matter is dangerous to health," said Dr. Silverman. "We need to figure out ways to combat air pollution and decrease the number of high-pollution days." He added that pollution related cardiac arrests occurred during times when the levels were high but still below the current EPA safety threshold.---The researchers are now looking for a relationship between out-of-hospital cardiac arrests and traffic flow patterns. Other studies have suggested that one in three people live in areas where small particulate matter levels are considered unhealthy.--Story Source: The above story is reprinted (with editorial adaptations by ScienceDaily staff) from materials provided by North Shore-Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Health System.---Journal Reference: R. Air Pollution Damages More Than Lungs: Heart And Blood Vessels Suffer
ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2008) — As athletes from around the world compete in the Beijing Olympics, many are on alert for respiratory problems caused by air pollution. They should also be concerned about its toxic effects on the heart and cardiovascular system, mounting research shows.---According to an article published in the August 26, 2008, issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), air pollution has both short- and long-term toxic effects that injure the heart and blood vessels, increase rates of hospitalization for cardiac illness, and can even cause death.---"We used to think air pollution was a problem that primarily affects the lungs. We now know it is also bad for the heart," said Robert A. Kloner, M.D., Ph.D., director of research at the Heart Institute of the Good Samaritan Hospital, and a professor of medicine at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, both in Los Angeles.--When pollutants are inhaled, they trigger an increase in "reactive oxygen species"—superoxiding molecules that damage cells, cause inflammation in the lungs, and spark the cascade of harmful effects in the heart and cardiovascular system. Recent research suggests that ultrafine air pollutants, such as those coming from car exhaust, may pass into the blood stream and damage the heart and blood vessels directly. Hearts directly exposed to ultrafine air pollutants show an immediate decrease in both coronary blood flow and the heart's pumping function, as well as a tendency to develop arrhythmias, according to studies conducted at the Heart Institute.--"There doesn't have to be an environmental catastrophe for air pollution to cause injury," said Boris Z. Simkhovich, M.D., Ph.D, a senior research associate at the Heart Institute of the Good Samaritan Hospital, and an assistant professor of research medicine at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. "We're talking about very modest increases. Air pollution can be dangerous at levels that are within the accepted air quality standards."---Studies in both humans and animals have shown that exposure to air pollution can affect heart rate, blood pressure, blood vessel function, blood clotting, and heart rate variability (a factor in developing heart rhythm disturbances), and speed the progression of atherosclerosis. Researchers who study large populations of people over time have found that increased levels of air pollution are linked to emergency hospital admissions for heart attack, chest pain, and congestive heart failure and even to death from heart disease, arrhythmias, heart failure and cardiac arrest. --The elderly and patients who have already been diagnosed with heart disease or diabetes (which damages the blood vessels) are particularly vulnerable to the cardiovascular effects of air pollution. ---"Patients with cardiovascular disease shouldn't exercise outside on days with increased air pollution levels. On very polluted days, they should consider staying inside, and during the winter, they should limit exposure to fireplace smoke," Dr. Kloner said. "Of course, the real solution is to reduce air pollution."---Alfred Bove, M.D., Ph.D., agreed. "The review by Dr. Simkhovich and his fellow authors make it quite clear that air pollution is linked to cardiovascular disease," said Dr. Bove, ACC's president-elect and cardiology section chief at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. "They suggest that this is another compelling reason to campaign for improved air quality, while at the same time studying therapies to minimize the risk of exposures."---Story Source-- The above story is reprinted (with editorial adaptations by ScienceDaily staff) from materials provided by American College of Cardiology, via EurekAlert!, a service of AAAS –

Recipe For lung Health---utilizing High dose of Vitamin A and beta carotene will offset a lot of this as well as combining it with Vitamin E and Vitamin C—utilizing ( depending on location—Elevation—and toxins In the air ) Minimal amount of Vitamin C would be 3,000mgs ( 3 grams and this is minimal you may need to go up to whatever levels work for you example 10 gr or 20 gr or even higher if there is an ongoing condition such as cancer or liver dysfunctions or immune breakdown---anything that has a high profile for the heart as well would be utilized –Vitamin C and Vitamin E and Selenium---Again 3 grams of Vitamin C+ 200-400 IU’sVitamin E 1-3 times a day with a full spectrum of tocopherols and toctrienols ( here are some sources of vitamin E Vitamin E content per 100 g of source include –remember 100 grams is about 3 oz
The proportion of vitamin E to other tocopherols in a nutrient source varies greatly. For example, the tocopherol content is 96% vitamin E in almonds and 9% vitamin E in poppy seeds---And Selenium 200 mcgs in divided dose 1 serving 3 times a day---
FOther things to use as well are Butter—Coconut Oil—Palm Oil these all have fats or antioxidants that will again restore or maintain Lung health and Fortify the Heart—Fat is used by our bodies to collect and remove particles and pathogens and is used to repair the damaged cells or organs-as well in the uptake of any fat soluble vitamin or nutrient ( meaning it helps in the absorption and utilization like vitamin A and cq 1o )
FHerbs to consider as well would be astragulus – chickweed-- Barley Grass protects Lung Cells against Cell damage from Radiation and the Cancer-causing agent 4-nitroso-quinolone--However Barley Grass must be consumed prior to exposure by these toxins in order for this effect to occur.
FHerbs--Astragalus is effective for chronic weakness of the Lungs.--Black Walnut alleviates many ailments of the Lungs.---Chaparral improves the function of the Lungs.--Chickweed reduces the build-up of Mucous in the Lungs.--Chillis clear the Lungs of Mucous (due to the Capsaicin content of Chilli). Thyme—Savoury—Garlic—Onion—Bay Leaf—Sage-- Phosphatidylcholine counteracts some of the damage inflicted on the Lungs by Tobacco smoking.—Making teas ir tictures will be the best way to get this going---capsules will be effective as well and are convienant
FMinerals---Magnesium improves the function of the Lungs -- One human study has demonstrated that subjects who consumed at least 380 mg of Magnesium per day exhibit superior Lung function compared to those consuming less than 380 mg of Magnesium per day regardless of whether the subjects smoked or not.--Selenium helps to prevent damage to the Lungs from Free Radicals-- Zinc strengthens the Mucous Membranes of the Lungs.—Carbonating the magnesium will be one of the best ways to take it by adding citric acid to a 3 ounces of water and 200 mgs of magnesium oxide or citrate—stir till saturated then add ¼ tsp of baking soda and this will uptake the mineral effectively---it will have a secondary impact –increased bowel activity may come about
FPolyphenols---Curcumin protects against Lung damage caused by various toxic substances. --

Researchers develop protein-packed potato in India
Mon Sep 20, 3:01 PM
SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Researchers in India have developed a genetically modified potato that is packed with up to 60 percent more protein and increased levels of amino acids. In a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Tuesday, the scientists expressed hope that the transgenic potato would find more acceptance because it uses a gene from the amaranth seed, another edible crop[U1]. "Because potato constitutes an important part of the diet of many people in developed as well as developing countries, it is apparent that this can add value to potato-based products with enhanced benefits for better human health,[U2]" they wrote. Amaranth is a tall, broadleaf plant that produces tiny seeds. It was a major food of the Aztecs and earlier American cultures, and started to be grown as a grain crop in the United States in the late 1970s. One of its genes, Amaranth Albumin 1 (AmA1), is regarded as agriculturally important because it endows the plant and its seeds with high protein levels and higher concentrations of several essential amino acids.
Led by Subhra Chakraborty at the National Institute of Plant Genome Research in New Delhi, the scientists inserted the gene into seven types of potatoes and then grew the transgenic potatoes over two years. They found that the transgenic potatoes contain between 35 and 60 percent more protein than unmodified potatoes. They also contain increased levels of amino acids, notably lysine, tyrosine and sulphur, which are usually limited in potatoes. These had been fed to rats and rabbits with no adverse consequences, the scientists said.
More than a billion people worldwide consume potatoes
FA footnote here something to speculate--Looked at from outside of commercial interests, perils of genetically modified foods and organisms are multi-dimensional. They include the creation of new "transgenic" life forms - organisms that cross unnatural gene lines (such as tomato seed genes crossed with fish genes) - and that have unpredictable behavior or replicate themselves out of control in the wild. This can happen, without warning, inside of our bodies creating an unpredictable chain reaction. A four-year study at the University of Jena in Germany conducted by Hans-Hinrich Kaatz revealed that bees ingesting pollen from transgenic rapeseed had bacteria in their gut with modified genes. This is called a "horizontal gene transfer." Commonly found bacteria and microorganisms in the human gut help maintain a healthy intestinal flora. These, however, can be mutated. ---Mutations may also be able to travel internally to other cells, tissue systems and organs throughout the human body. Not to be underestimated, the potential domino effect of internal and external genetic pollution can make the substance of science-fiction horror movies become terrible realities in the future. The same is true for the bacteria that maintain the health of our soil - and are vitally necessary for all forms of farming - in fact for human sustenance and survival.

[U1]what is so profound here us that there is so much antagonizing elements to GMO or GE food that one has to think why it is still here the whole crux of safety is not ever going to be answerred til we are 50-100 years in the future and when people will make comments on the stupidity of this generation to have allowed this kind of mutation to exist---we have been consuming not GMO or GE Foods BUT MUTATED FOODS--which in turn Mutate other life organisms environmentally as well as internally!!!!
[U2]Here we go all in the name of benefit and a profit margin is loud and clear with the concept of Food nutrition---the facts are that these Viruses they are implanting in the foods need to be studdied on long term human Genome
Genetics---we are already seeing signs of mutations---Look at our politicians--here are prime examples of GMMP==Genetically Mmodified Mutated People---and now they want to feed this to us

Canadians To
Be Vaccinated With Live H1N1 Virus with MSG ----For The 2010/11 Flu Season---The
Public Health Agency of Canada has once again given their seal of approval for
the
injection
of a dangerous cocktail of toxic chemicals they call a trivalent vaccine. The
2010/11 recipients of
AstraZeneca's FLUMIST will be exposed to
several strains of live viruses including H1N1 and H3N2. The vaccine also
contains MSG and other known neurotoxins and immunotoxins.---Similar
to last year's
Arepanrix Vaccine, FLUMIST was approved without evaluating its safety and
effectiveness on a single Canadian. ---The vaccines are especially being
promoted for children since the nasal spray vaccine can be marketed as less
invasive due its intranasal delivery that does not require needles. Ontario's
chief medical officer of health said a non-injectable vaccine is an "attractive
option." The product has been on the U.S. market for the last seven years.---AstraZeneca
Canada is
currently ensuring that all Canadian pharmacies are making preparations to stock
the vaccine this fall.
The influenza vaccine will be one of several vaccines to be offered on the
Canadian market.---On August 26, 2010,
Health
Canada issued a
Notice of Decision
to AstraZeneca Canada for the FLUMIST vaccine.
The FLUMIST Trivalent vaccine product information:
Three
Live Viruses:
Additional Toxic Ingredients:
-
Arginine hydrochloride: Toxic to lungs and mucous membranes |
Adverse
Reactions
-
Headaches Serious Adverse Reactions
Congenital, familial and genetic: |
Discussion---There
are currently NO clinical trials or results which have validated the long-term
safety and efficacy of the FLUMIST vaccine.
Regulatory health agencies are
refusing to
acknowledge this fact or the nature of toxicity levels associated with the
FLUMIST and its ingredients.
The well documented toxicity evidence for each ingredient presented above are
simply ignored. If you'll notice, most of the ingredients that are considered
non-clinically relevant excipients are
ALL TOXIC
and yet still injected in every person that receives the vaccine.
No Pharmacokinetic, Carcinogenic or Fertility Studies----One of the most
critical elements which defines the toxicity potential of any vaccine are its
pharmacokinetic properties. AstraZeneca and Medimmune do not consider the study,
analysis or evaluation of the
pharmacokinetic properties of any vaccine ingredients or excipients
including FLUMIST.
This means
that the bodily absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of
ingredients within the vaccine are not known or even considered in safety
assessments.
---FLUMIST has not been evaluated for its carcinogenic or mutagenic potential
or its potential to impair fertility. There have also been
NO animal
reproduction studies or studies in pregnant or lactating women and it is not
known whether FLUMIST is excreted in human milk..
Hospitalizations and Deaths---An increased rate of hospitalizations (for
any cause) through 180 days after final vaccination dose of FLUMIST was observed
in children 6-11 months of age.
There were eight deaths reported within 180 days of FLUMIST
dosing. Of the 8 deaths, 4 occurred within 42 days after the last dose of
FLUMIST. 43 and 180 days after FLUMIST dosing, deaths were due to diarrhea and
sepsis, encephalopathy, suffocation, and posterior fossa tumor and malignant
hyperthermia.----The
information above clearly demonstrates that the Public Health Agency of
Canada
and Health Canada have no interest in meeting some of the most basic precautions
to safeguard the health of Canadians.
---Last year, just as flu activity increased across Canada,
federal authorities warned Canadians not to buy natural remedies and to
strictly confide in the anti-viral drugs and vaccines authorized by Health
Canada. ---172,000
doses were eventually recalled and withdrawn
after
serious adverse reactions, notably in the heart and lungs, and hundreds of
deaths were reported.---Please
protect yourself naturally from the flu. Learn
what colds and flus really are and use
common sense to the best of your ability.---Dave Mihalovic

Potential Alternative to HRT
In vitro estrogenic activities of fenugreek Trigonella foenum graecum seeds.
Indian J Med Res. 2010 Jun;131:814-9--Authors: Sreeja S, Anju VS, Sreeja S
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Trigonella foenum graecum commonly known as fenugreek, has been widely cultivated in Asia, Africa and Mediterranean countries for the edible and medicinal values of its seeds. Earlier reports show that fenugreek seeds provide a mastogenic effect resulting in enhanced breast size. However, very little is known about its estrogenic effect. The present study investigated the effect of chloroform extracts of fenugreek seeds (FCE) in breast cancer cells for its estrogenic effect, and to assess its capacity as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy (HRT). METHODS: The effect of FCE on cell proliferation of estrogen receptor (ER) positive breast cancer cells, MCF-7 was studied by MTT assay at a concentration range of 20 to 320 microg/ml. The competitive ER binding assay (HAP assay) was done to find out the ER binding capacity of the extract. Transfection and reporter assay (DLR assay), and RT- PCR with an estrogen responsive gene pS2 were done to find out the transcriptional regulatory activity of FCE. RESULTS: FCE stimulated the proliferation of MCF-7 cells, showed binding to ER (IC(50) = 185.6 +/- 32.8 microg/ ml) and acted as an agonist for ER mediated transcription via ERE. It also induced the expression of estrogen responsive gene pS2 in MCF-7 cells. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION: Our study provided the evidence for estrogenic activities of fenugreek seeds. Further in vitro and in vivo studies could demonstrate its suitability as an alternative to HRT.---PMID: 20571172 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

The FDA is too lenient regarding health claims and should follow EFSA’s lead and hold foods “to the same scientific standards as those for drugs”[U1], according to the editors of Scientific American.
In the most recent issue of the magazine, an editorial entitled “Snake oil in the supermarket” states that consumers are currently getting a “rotten deal” with regards functional foods. ----“Although health claims for foods may appear to be authoritative, in many cases science does not support them and the government does not endorse them,” state the authors. “Not only do these products, many of which are nutritionally bereft, fail to deliver on their promises, but they may also give consumers a false sense of security that discourages them from taking more effective measures to attain wellness, such as exercise or medication[U2].” ---The editors do note the warning letters sent to 17 food and beverage manufacturers in March, and describe this as an “unusually expansive crackdown for the agency”. Only this week FDA issued a warning letter to Unilever for health claims related to cholesterol reduction on its Lipton Green Tea 100 percent Naturally Decaffeinated product. ---“Holding health claims for food to the same scientific standards as those for drugs—and requiring manufacturers to convince the FDA of alleged benefits before releasing products for sale—would result in far fewer health claims on packaged foods, if recent developments in Europe are any indication,”[U3] wrote the editors. “In 2006 Europe began holding food makers to rigorous scientific standards. Since then, the European Food Safety Authority has rejected, on the basis of insufficient evidence, a whopping 80 percent of the more than 900 claims they have assessed thus far[U4].” --Dannon versus Danone ---To show the differences between the FDA and EFSA approaches, the editors look to Danone/Dannon. According to the Scientific American article, US visitors to the Activia website “prominently displays the product’s putative health benefits, asserting that it can ‘help regulate your digestive system by helping reduce long intestinal transit time’.” ----“The UK version, on the other hand, says only that the yogurt contains an exclusive bacterial culture and, like other yogurts, is a source of calcium and vitamin B12,” they add[U5]. --Lame arguments ---To conclude, the editors state: “Industry representatives complain that having to prove claims about the health benefits of food would cost too much and take too long. It’s a lame argument. The nation is currently engaged in a struggle against skyrocketing rates of obesity and other diet-related diseases that are among the leading causes of death in the U.S. In this context, unsubstantiated health claims on processed foods are a harmful abuse of science that we should not tolerate.”

In their quest for health and wellness via the diet, consumers in Sweden are increasingly looking to organic, additive-free – and high fat products. ---These are the main trends highlighted by market research Euromonitor in a Health and Wellness report published in July 2010. --Switch to high fat ---According to the report, more and more Swedish consumers are switching from low-fat to high-fat products in order to lose weight, picking up on a trend that was noticeable several years ago, but that has since accelerated. ----“The trend has been spurred by diets such as the Atkins diet, and more recently by the LCHF diet, or the Low-Carb High-Fat diet. The Low-Carb High-Fat diet bears a resemblance to the Atkins diet, with the LCHF diet mainly promoted by the physician and popular blogger Annika Dahlqvist,” writes Euromonitor [U6] The LCHF, which diet promotes the use of saturated fats, has gained significant attention in the Swedish media, despite being regarded as controversial by many people, says the researcher. --Additive-free ---In addition, consumers in Sweden as in several western European regions, particularly the UK, are also avoiding products containing certain additives regarded as harmful. These include trans fats, monosodium glutamate and artificial sweeteners. ----“Eating naturally healthy food has been promoted by associations like Äkta Vara (Genuine Produce), among others. The founder of the association, Mats-Eric Nilsson, wrote two best-selling books in which he criticises the food industry for using too many additives. The publication of the books in 2007 and 2008 sparked a debate on the use of artificial additives in the Swedish media,” writes Euromonitor. ---The report notes that many manufacturers in Sweden have started to respond to the increased demand for food and beverages that are free from artificial additives and, in 2009, Procordia Food announced that it would stop using monosodium glutamate in its products. --Organic and local --Organic foods and beverages continue to be important for Swedish consumers, with strong sales in 2009 despite the tightened economy. However, growth rates – which peaked in 2008 – have suffered from a lack of supply of organic ingredients,” said Euromonitor. ---“The Swedish dairies have started to raise the prices they pay for organic milk in order to increase the number of organic dairy farmers. The supply of fresh organic bread has also suffered from the fact that large bakeries with a nationwide coverage are unwilling to bake organic bread, which is still baked in relatively small numbers. The mill and bakery Saltå Kvarn, which is specialised in organic and biodynamic bread, was planning to open a new bakery in the Stockholm region in 2010, and this will improve the availability of organic fresh bread.” ---The increasing demand for organic food and beverages also led to a number of private label developments, noted the researcher. --In 2008, the grocery retailer ICA launched the organic label I Love Eco, which replaced the old brand ICA Ekologiskt. “However, the development of organic private label lines poses a threat to small and medium-sized manufacturers of organic food and beverages in particular.” -- Swedish consumers have also started to seek out locally produced goods, as they become more concerned about their health or more environmentally conscious[U7]. ---“Marketing the food as locally produced has become a new way for manufacturers to target such consumers.” ---“The trend is expected to be boosted by the new climate label, which is being developed by, among others, KRAV, the organisation which is also developing the label for organic food. The first products with the new label are expected to appear in 2010. “

Treatment of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome category IIIA with Serenoa repens plus selenium and lycopene (Profluss) versus S. repens alone: an Italian randomized multicenter-controlled study.
Urol Int. 2010;84(4):400-6---Authors: Morgia G, Mucciardi G, Galì A, Madonia M, Marchese F, Di Benedetto A, Romano G, Bonvissuto G, Castelli T, Macchione L, Magno C
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Serenoa repens + selenium and lycopene (Profluss) versus S. repens ( Saw Palmetto ) alone for the treatment of category IIIa chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: 102 patients with IIIa CP/CPPS were enrolled and randomized into two groups each to receive Profluss or S. repens alone for 8 weeks. Evaluation was based on results of the National Institutes of Health-Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI), IPSS, maximum peak flow rate (MPFR), and PSA measurements at baseline and at weeks 4, 8 and 8 after the end of treatment. The primary endpoint was a >50% reduction in NIH-CPSI score. Secondary endpoints evaluated were MPFR, IPSS, PSA and white blood cell count. RESULTS: No patients withdrew from the study. The mean NIH-CPSI score decreased significantly (p < 0.001) in both groups; we observed a decrease in the total score from 27.45 to 13.27 in group 1 (-51.64%) and from 27.76 to 20.62 in group 2 (-26.06%). IPSS improved significantly (p < 0.001) in both arms, but more in group 1. PSA and white blood cell count decreased significantly (p < 0.007) only in group 1. The MPFR improved more in group 1 (p < 0.005). CONCLUSION: Profluss is a triple therapy that is safe and well tolerated. It ameliorates symptoms associated with IIIa CP/CPPS. --PMID: 20332612 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

[U1]Unbelievable the level of promotion and flaunting they are doing with this--I have been saying that the FDA -HPB in Canada are waiting for the EFSA ( run by the FDA ) to fromualte claims under article 13.1---now they are saying in a Nutshell to corroberate and have the same standards which will eliminate access to real doses needed for Helath
[U2]Again a broad claim derailing the food industry or the labeling of the industry---but yet this is a 2 edge sword nothing is ever mentioned on GMO or GE or the dangers of GMO or even the lack of nutrition of the GMO and yet they will be continued to be sold as a food product rather the a mutated food and a toxic waste
[U3]Again with the Misleading---the EFSA is having a difficut time getting the regulations in place because these foods are not drugs and it is difficult at best to define the supplements or herbs in a way of medicine due to the fact they are complete and have a full compliment of chemistry and enzymes that drugs do not have
[U4]Which are being challenged and even being litigated
[U5]Again this just changed recently and Danone is challenged this with the EFSA
[U6]The very cocncept I as well suggest to most People and it works well
[U7]This Trend has been going on globally and locally the biggest problem we have is to deal with the mulitanationals who fee threatened by cleaner foods and healthier choices
