The Organic Elite Surrenders to Monsanto
by Ronnie Cummins
"The policy set for GE alfalfa will most likely guide policies for other GE crops as well. True coexistence is a must." -- Whole Foods Market, Jan. 21, 2011
In the wake of a 12-year battle to keep Monsanto's Genetically Engineered (GE) crops from contaminating the nation's 25,000 organic farms and ranches, America's organic consumers and producers are facing betrayal. A self-appointed cabal of the Organic Elite, spearheaded by Whole Foods Market , Organic Valley , and Stonyfield Farm , has decided it's time to surrender to Monsanto. Top executives from these companies have publicly admitted that they no longer oppose the mass commercialization of GE crops, such as Monsanto's controversial Roundup Ready alfalfa, and are prepared to sit down and cut a deal for "coexistence" with Monsanto and USDA biotech cheerleader Tom Vilsack. ---In a cleverly worded, but profoundly misleading email sent to its customers last week, Whole Foods Market, while proclaiming their support for organics and "seed purity," gave the green light to USDA bureaucrats to approve the "conditional deregulation" of Monsanto's genetically engineered, herbicide-resistant alfalfa. Beyond the regulatory euphemism of "conditional deregulation," this means that WFM and their colleagues are willing to go along with the massive planting of a chemical and energy-intensive GE perennial crop, alfalfa; guaranteed to spread its mutant genes and seeds across the nation; guaranteed to contaminate the alfalfa fed to organic animals; guaranteed to lead to massive poisoning of farm workers and destruction of the essential soil food web by the toxic herbicide, Roundup; and guaranteed to produce Roundup-resistant superweeds that will require even more deadly herbicides such as 2,4 D to be sprayed on millions of acres of alfalfa across the U.S.
In exchange for allowing Monsanto's premeditated pollution of the alfalfa gene pool, WFM wants "compensation." In payment for a new broad spectrum attack on the soil's crucial ability to provide nutrition for food crops and to sequester dangerous greenhouse gases (recent studies show that Roundup devastates essential soil microorganisms that provide plant nutrition and sequester climate-destabilizing greenhouse gases), WFM wants the Biotech Bully of St. Louis to agree to pay "compensation" (i.e. hush money) to farmers "for any losses related to the contamination of his crop."
In its email of Jan. 21, 2011 WFM calls for "public oversight by the USDA rather than reliance on the biotechnology industry," even though WFM knows full well that federal regulations on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) do not require pre-market safety testing, nor labeling; and that even federal judges have repeatedly ruled that so-called government "oversight" of Frankencrops such as Monsanto's sugar beets and alfalfa is basically a farce. At the end of its email, WFM admits that its surrender to Monsanto is permanent: "The policy set for GE alfalfa will most likely guide policies for other GE crops as well True coexistence is a must." --Why Is Organic Inc. Surrendering?
According to informed sources, the CEOs of WFM and Stonyfield are personal friends of former Iowa governor, now USDA Secretary, Tom Vilsack, and in fact made financial contributions to Vilsack's previous electoral campaigns. Vilsack was hailed as "Governor of the Year" in 2001 by the Biotechnology Industry Organization, and traveled in a Monsanto corporate jet on the campaign trail. Perhaps even more fundamental to Organic Inc.'s abject surrender is the fact that the organic elite has become more and more isolated from the concerns and passions of organic consumers and locavores. The Organic Inc. CEOs are tired of activist pressure, boycotts, and petitions. Several of them have told me this to my face. They apparently believe that the battle against GMOs has been lost, and that it's time to reach for the consolation prize. The consolation prize they seek is a so-called "coexistence" between the biotech Behemoth and the organic community that will lull the public to sleep and greenwash the unpleasant fact that Monsanto's unlabeled and unregulated genetically engineered crops are now spreading their toxic genes on 1/3 of U.S. (and 1/10 of global) crop land.---WFM and most of the largest organic companies have deliberately separated themselves from anti-GMO efforts and cut off all funding to campaigns working to label or ban GMOs. The so-called Non-GMO Project , funded by Whole Foods and giant wholesaler United Natural Foods (UNFI) is basically a greenwashing effort (although the 100% organic companies involved in this project seem to be operating in good faith[U1]) to show that certified organic foods are basically free from GMOs (we already know this since GMOs are banned in organic production), while failing to focus on so-called "natural" foods, which constitute most of WFM and UNFI's sales and are routinely contaminated with GMOs. ---From their "business as usual" perspective, successful lawsuits against GMOs filed by public interest groups such as the Center for Food Safety; or noisy attacks on Monsanto by groups like the Organic Consumers Association, create bad publicity, rattle their big customers such as Wal-Mart, Target, Kroger, Costco, Supervalu, Publix and Safeway; and remind consumers that organic crops and foods such as corn, soybeans, and canola are slowly but surely becoming contaminated by Monsanto's GMOs.---Whole Food's Dirty Little Secret: Most of the So-Called "Natural" Processed Foods and Animal Products They Sell Are Contaminated with GMOs--The main reason, however, why Whole Foods is pleading for coexistence with Monsanto, Dow, Bayer, Syngenta, BASF and the rest of the biotech bullies, is that they desperately want the controversy surrounding genetically engineered foods and crops to go away. Why? Because they know, just as we do, that 2/3 of WFM's $9 billion annual sales is derived from so-called "natural" processed foods and animal products that are contaminated with GMOs. We and our allies have tested their so-called "natural" products (no doubt WFM's lab has too) containing non-organic corn and soy, and guess what: they're all contaminated with GMOs, in contrast to their certified organic products, which are basically free of GMOs, or else contain barely detectable trace amounts.--Approximately 2/3 of the products sold by Whole Foods Market and their main distributor, United Natural Foods (UNFI) are not certified organic, but rather are conventional (chemical-intensive and GMO-tainted) foods and products disguised as "natural."---Unprecedented wholesale and retail control of the organic marketplace by UNFI and Whole Foods, employing a business model of selling twice as much so-called "natural" food as certified organic food, coupled with the takeover of many organic companies by multinational food corporations such as Dean Foods, threatens the growth of the organic movement.---Covering Up GMO Contamination: Perpetrating "Natural" Fraud---Many well-meaning consumers are confused about the difference between conventional products marketed as "natural," and those nutritionally/environmentally superior and climate-friendly products that are "certified organic." ---Retail stores like WFM and wholesale distributors like UNFI have failed to educate their customers about the qualitative difference between natural and certified organic, conveniently glossing over the fact that nearly all of the processed "natural" foods and products they sell contain GMOs, or else come from a "natural" supply chain where animals are force-fed GMO grains in factory farms or Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs).---A troubling trend in organics today is the calculated shift on the part of certain large formerly organic brands from certified organic ingredients and products to so-called "natural" ingredients. With the exception of the "grass-fed and grass-finished" meat sector, most "natural" meat, dairy, and eggs are coming from animals reared on GMO grains and drugs, and confined, entirely, or for a good portion of their lives, in CAFOs. ---Whole Foods and UNFI are maximizing their profits by selling quasi-natural products at premium organic prices. Organic consumers are increasingly left without certified organic choices while genuine organic farmers and ranchers continue to lose market share to "natural" imposters. It's no wonder that less than 1% of American farmland is certified organic, while well-intentioned but misled consumers have boosted organic and "natural" purchases to $80 billion annually-approximately 12% of all grocery store sales. The Solution: Truth-in-Labeling Will Enable Consumers to Drive So-Called "Natural" GMO and CAFO-Tainted Foods Off the Market[U2]---There can be no such thing as "coexistence" with a reckless industry that undermines public health, destroys biodiversity, damages the environment, tortures and poisons animals, destabilizes the climate, and economically devastates the world's 1.5 billion seed-saving small farmers. There is no such thing as coexistence between GMOs and organics in the European Union. Why? Because in the EU there are almost no GMO crops under cultivation, nor[U3] GM consumer food products on supermarket shelves. And why is this? Because under EU law, all foods containing GMOs or GMO ingredients must be labeled. Consumers have the freedom to choose or not to choose GMOs; while farmers, food processors, and retailers have (at least legally) the right to lace foods with GMOs, as long as they are safety-tested and labeled. Of course the EU food industry understands that consumers, for the most part, do not want to purchase or consume GE foods. European farmers and food companies, even junk food purveyors like McDonald's and Wal-Mart, understand quite well the concept expressed by a Monsanto executive when GMOs first came on the market: "If you put a label on genetically engineered food you might as well put a skull and crossbones on it."---The biotech industry and Organic Inc. are supremely conscious of the fact that North American consumers, like their European counterparts, are wary and suspicious of GMO foods. Even without a PhD, consumers understand you don't want your food safety or environmental sustainability decisions to be made by out-of-control chemical companies like Monsanto, Dow, or Dupont - the same people who brought you toxic pesticides, Agent Orange, PCBs, and now global warming. Industry leaders are acutely aware of the fact that every single industry or government poll over the last 16 years has shown that 85-95% of American consumers want mandatory labels on GMO foods. Why? So that we can avoid buying them. GMO foods have absolutely no benefits for consumers or the environment, only hazards. This is why Monsanto and their friends in the Bush, Clinton, and Obama administrations have prevented consumer GMO truth-in-labeling laws from getting a public discussion in Congress.
Although Congressman Dennis Kucinich (Democrat, Ohio) recently introduced a bill in Congress calling for mandatory labeling and safety testing for GMOs, don't hold your breath for Congress to take a stand for truth-in-labeling and consumers' right to know what's in their food. Especially since the 2010 Supreme Court decision in the so-called "Citizens United" case gave big corporations and billionaires the right to spend unlimited amounts of money (and remain anonymous, as they do so) to buy media coverage and elections, our chances of passing federal GMO labeling laws against the wishes of Monsanto and Food Inc. are all but non-existent. Perfectly dramatizing the "Revolving Door " between Monsanto and the Federal Government, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, formerly chief counsel for Monsanto, delivered one of the decisive votes in the Citizens United case, in effect giving Monsanto and other biotech bullies the right to buy the votes it needs in the U.S. Congress.--With big money controlling Congress and the media, we have little choice but to shift our focus and go local. We've got to concentrate our forces where our leverage and power lie, in the marketplace, at the retail level; pressuring retail food stores to voluntarily label their products; while on the legislative front we must organize a broad coalition to pass mandatory GMO (and CAFO) labeling laws, at the city, county, and state levels.
The Organic Consumers Association, joined by our consumer, farmer, environmental, and labor allies, has just launched a nationwide Truth-in-Labeling campaign to stop Monsanto and the Biotech Bullies from force-feeding unlabeled GMOs to animals and humans.
Utilizing scientific data, legal precedent, and consumer power the OCA and our local coalitions will educate and mobilize at the grassroots level to pressure giant supermarket chains (Wal-Mart, Kroger, Costco, Safeway, Supervalu, and Publix) and natural food retailers such as Whole Foods and Trader Joe's to voluntarily implement "truth-in-labeling" practices for GMOs and CAFO products; while simultaneously organizing a critical mass to pass mandatory local and state truth-in-labeling ordinances - similar to labeling laws already in effect for country of origin, irradiated food, allergens, and carcinogens. If local and state government bodies refuse to take action, wherever possible we must attempt to gather sufficient petition signatures and place these truth-in-labeling initiatives directly on the ballot in 2011 or 2012. If you're interesting in helping organize or coordinate a Millions Against Monsanto and Factory Farms Truth-in-Labeling campaign in your local community, sign up here: http://organicconsumers.org/oca-volunteer/
To pressure Whole Foods Market and the nation's largest supermarket chains to voluntarily adopt truth-in-labeling practices sign here, and circulate this petition widely: http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_22309.cfm

New Probiotic Combats Inflammatory Bowel Disease
ScienceDaily (Feb. 1, 2011) — You know the probiotics in your peach yogurt are healthful, but now it appears they may also be a powerful treatment for disease. A genetically tweaked version of a common probiotic found in yogurt and cheese appears to be an effective therapy for inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. It may also prove to be useful in colon cancer, another disease triggered by inflammation.---Northwestern Medicine researchers deleted a gene in the probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus and fed the new form to mice with two different models of colitis. After 13 days of treatment, the novel probiotic strain nearly eliminated colon inflammation in the mice and halted progression of their disease by 95 percent.--"This opens brand new avenues to treat various autoimmune diseases of the gut, including inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer, all which can be triggered by imbalanced inflammatory immune responses," said Mansour Mohamadzadeh, associate professor of medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and lead investigator of the study. He also is a member of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.--The study will be published Jan. 31 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.--While the origin of these bowel diseases is not known, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are two chronically relapsing diseases in which sufferers have an ongoing tissue inflammation that alters the functioning of the intestine. The diseases affect more than 1 million people in the United States and can cause weight loss, diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramping and gastrointestinal bleeding. Current drug treatment is not completely effective and patients can relapse, Mohamadzadeh said.--"Such gene targeting in a probiotic bacteria such as Lactobacillus acidophilus offers the possibility of a safe, drug-free treatment in the near future," he said.--In the study, the modified Lactobacillus acidophilus entered the gut, which is akin to a battlefield of friendly fire with immune cells attacking the intestine. The Lactobacillus acidophilus acted as the gut's peacekeeping force, calming the overstimulated immune cells. The probiotic restored intestinal peace by mobilizing messenger immune cells, called dendritic cells. The dendritic cells, in turn, enhanced the production of other functional immune cells, regulatory T-cells that rebalanced intestinal and systemic inflammation.--"They essentially calm everything down and restore it to normal," Mohamadzadeh explained. The next step will be a clinical trial with the new form of Lactobacillus acidophilus. Mohamadzadeh and his colleagues at the Lurie Cancer Center are currently researching the effect of the new Lactobacillus acidophilus on colon cancer. More Evidence Cancer Drug Avastin May Cause Harm
Increased risk of death seen in review of 16 trials
TUESDAY, Feb. 1 (HealthDay News) -- A new review finds more evidence that the beleaguered cancer drug Avastin may harm patients.--An analysis of previously published studies found that the drug, when used in combination with chemotherapy or biological therapy, actually increased patient deaths from adverse events, compared with using chemotherapy or biologics alone. --This new information should change the way patients and practitioners think about the drug, said Dr. Shenhong Wu, senior author of the report, published Feb. 2 in the Journal of the American Medical Association. --"I believe the risk-benefit ratio has changed," said Wu, assistant professor of medicine at Stony Brook University Medical Center in Stony Brook, N.Y. "Physicians need to think about this."---Avastin (bevacizumab) was okayed in 2008 for use in conjunction with chemotherapy to treat breast cancer under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's accelerated approval program. Approval was based on one clinical trial in patients with metastatic HER2-negative breast cancer that found a benefit in terms of cancer recurrence -- but not overall survival -- and was contingent on further data to confirm the results. --Three subsequent studies failed to find an overall survival benefit and, in fact, showed less impressive improvements in survival involving no progression of cancer. ---After reviewing all four studies, the FDA in December recommended revoking approval of Avastin to fight breast cancer. The recommendation didn't affect use of Avastin for advanced colon, lung, kidney and brain cancer. --Wu and his colleagues looked at 16 completed randomized controlled trials on Avastin involving more than 10,000 patients with different forms of cancer. ---Some 2.5 percent of patients taking Genentech-made Avastin died compared with 1.7 percent of those taking chemotherapy alone, a 46 percent increased risk, the investigators found. --The rate was about the same across tumor types but not across different chemotherapy regimens. The risk was increased among those receiving chemotherapy containing taxanes or platinum agents but not other chemo compounds. --The most common causes of death were hemorrhage, followed by low white-blood-cell count and gastrointestinal perforations. --Dr. Roman Perez-Soler, chairman of oncology and chief of medical oncology at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City, a lung cancer expert, pointed out that lung cancer is one of the few malignancies in which Avastin has prolonged survival and thus might still have a place in this armamentarium. --But an accompanying journal editorial raises other considerations, including the cost ($50,000 a year for the drug alone, plus the cost of monitoring and chemo) and a cumbersome delivery method (frequent injections for years). ---The author of that editorial acknowledged that Avastin works well in some patients, but said it's impossible to predict in which patients and for how long benefits will last.

Probiotics protect
against bacterial infection
6/20/2007-
A newly
characterised strain of probiotic bacteria may have potential to
kill Listeria monocytogenes,
an often-lethal pathogen in pregnant women,
Irish researchers report.
The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of
Sciences, could see pregnant women and a number of other
high-risk groups receiving the probiotic to protect them from potential
infection.
Lead author Sinead Corr from University College Cork told NutraIngredients.com:
"Our
results clearly demonstrate the ability of certain probiotic bacteria to protect
against potentially fatal illnesses.
More specifically we have shown a role for bacteriocins in
protecting against the
potentially fatal foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes.
"As probiotics mechanisms are specific, thorough understanding of their
beneficial effects are required. Understanding these mechanisms will enable
their use in prevention and treatment of specific illnesses.
This study clearly
demonstrates how probiotic bacteria may help to improve the health of
consumers."
Probiotic products containing 'friendly' bacteria are now well accepted by
consumers in many European countries,
with putative benefits
highlighted for gut and immune health.
Some of the researchers in this
new study previously reported that a mixture of
five Lactobacillus probiotic
strains may reduce food poisoning by salmonella.
In that instance, the benefits for gut health were reported to be
due to the probiotic bacteria
adhering to the walls of the intestine, which inhibits the ability of the
pathogenic Salmonella to stick and colonise the gut, thereby reducing the
infection. The new study
offers an alternative method of protection, with a specific strain of
Lactobacillus salivarius
named UCC118 capable of
producing an antibiotic-like compound called a bacteriocin.
When the researchers tested UCC118 in mice
infected with two strains of food-borne Listeria monocytogenes, EGDe and LO28,
they found that the mice were protected against infection.
When the mice were given a mutant form of the probiotic that was unable to
produce the Abp118 bacteriocin, no protection against infection was observed.
Also, "Lb. salivarius UCC118 did not offer any protection when mice were
infected with a strain of L. monocytogenes expressing the cognate Abp118
immunity protein AbpIM,
confirming that the
antimicrobial effect is a result of direct antagonism between Lb. salivarius and
the pathogen, mediated by the bacteriocin Abp118,"
reported the researchers.
"The results of the
UCC work clearly demonstrate a
role for bacteriocins in
protecting the host against potentially lethal infections.
The study is the first to clearly demonstrate a mechanism by which probiotic
bacteria may act to help improve the health of consumers,"
said a release from
the university. Most foods containing probiotic bacteria are found in the
refrigerated section of supermarkets as the bacteria is destroyed by heat and
other processing conditions. This has given the dairy sector, already used to
handling live bacteria for the manufacture of yoghurt, a major advantage in
probiotic foods - probiotic drinking yoghurts are currently the fastest growing
dairy product in Europe.
But increasing research has focused on expanding protecting probiotics during
processing and expanding the food categories available to prebiotics. Such an
avenue of research has led companies like Cell Biotech from Korea using a
dual-coating to protect probiotics against oxygen, acid, moisture and high
temperatures for use in emerging new product categories such as breakfast
cereals and smoothies.
Other approaches are also
being explored, with scientists looking at improving probiotic viability by
using whey protein gel particles, or prebiotic fibres.

[U2]This is not going to happen --with the EFSA in Europe and agenda 21 progressing and bills C-36 and bills 510 in the USA unless the efsa is totally undermined and broken this legislation will initiate this new way or profitting for those in the drug industry and the food cartels as well
[U3]This is not entirely true each member of the EU haa jurisdiction on there farms in Spain they grow GMO and push to market it in Europee so does Portugal –In france the can gorw it but the farmers have to pay for any cross contamination problems—germany does grow GMO as well and So does the UK –what is true is the labeling of GMO

1) Roasting Coffee Beans a Dark Brown Produces Valued Antioxidants, Scientists Find
Researchers have found that the prevailing antioxidants present in dark roasted coffee brew extracts result from the green beans being browned under high temperatures---ScienceDaily (Feb. 3, 2011) — Food scientists at the University of British Columbia have been able to pinpoint more of the complex chemistry behind coffee's much touted antioxidant benefits, tracing valuable compounds to the roasting process.---Lead author Yazheng Liu and co-author Prof. David Kitts found that the prevailing antioxidants present in dark roasted coffee brew extracts result from the green beans being browned under high temperatures.---Their findings will appear in a forthcoming issue of Food Research International.--Liu and Kitts analyzed the complex mixture of chemical compounds produced during the bean's browning process, called the "Maillard reaction." The term refers to the work by French chemist Louis-Camille Maillard who in the 1900s looked at how heat affects the carbohydrates, sugars and proteins in food, such as when grilling steaks or toasting bread.---Antioxidants aid in removing free radicals, the end products of metabolism which have been linked to the aging process.---"Previous studies suggested that antioxidants in coffee could be traced to caffeine or the chlorogenic acid found in green coffee beans, but our results clearly show that the Maillard reaction is the main source of antioxidants," says Liu, an MSc student in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems (LFS).
"We found, for example, that coffee beans lose 90 per cent of their chlorogenic acid during the roasting process," says Kitts, LFS food science professor and director of the Food, Nutrition and Health program.
The UBC study sheds light on an area of research that has yielded largely inconsistent findings. While some scientists report increased antioxidant activity in coffee made from dark roasted beans, others found a decrease. Yet other theories insist that medium roast coffees yield the highest level of antioxidant activity.

2) Proteins in Unroasted Coffee Beans May Become Next-Generation Insecticides
ScienceDaily (Apr. 1, 2010) — Scientists in Brazil are reporting for the first time that coffee beans contain proteins that can kill insects and might be developed into new insecticides for protecting food crops against destructive pests.--Their study, which suggests a new use for one of the most important tropical crops in the world, appears in ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, a bi-weekly publication.--Peas, beans and some other plant seeds contain proteins, called globulins, which ward off insects. Coffee beans contain large amounts of globulins, and Paulo Mazzafera and colleagues wondered whether those coffee proteins might also have an insecticidal effect. The high heat of roasting destroys globulins, so that they do not appear in brewed coffee.---Their tests against cowpea weevil larva, insects used as models for studying the insecticidal activity of proteins, showed that tiny amounts of the coffee proteins quickly killed up to half of the insects. In the future, scientists could insert genes for these insect-killing proteins into important food crops, such as grains, so that plants produce their own insecticides, the researchers suggest. The proteins appear harmless to people.

HPV Vaccine Works for Boys- Study Shows First Clear Benefits[U2]
ScienceDaily (Feb. 5, 2011) — The vaccine for human papillomavirus (HPV) can prevent 90 percent of genital warts in men when offered before exposure to the four HPV strains covered by the vaccine, according to a new multi-center study led by H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and UCSF.--The four-year, international clinical trial, which also found a nearly 66 percent effectiveness in the general population of young men regardless of prior exposure to these strains, provides the first reported results of using the HPV vaccine as a prophylactic in men.---Initial data from this study informed the Food and Drug Administration's decision to approve the vaccine for boys in 2009 to prevent warts, while results from a sub study led the FDA to expand approval late last year to prevent anal cancer. Findings can be found in the Feb. 3 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.--While the HPV vaccine was approved in 2006 for girls to prevent cervical cancer, the vaccine's benefit for young men was not initially addressed. Yet infection and diseases caused by HPV are common in men, the researchers said, including genital warts, which are one of the leading sexually transmitted diseases (STD) for which treatment is sought nationwide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that half of all sexually active Americans will get HPV at some point in their lives.---"This is an exciting development in the STD world," said Joel Palefsky, MD, a UCSF professor of medicine who co-led the research along with epidemiologist Anna R. Giuliano, PhD, from the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, in Tampa, FL. "It shows that if we vaccinate males early enough, we should be able to prevent most cases of external genital warts in this population."---While warts are often considered an annoyance, rather than a life-threatening disease such as cervical cancer, Palefsky noted that warts are a common problem in young people and are often associated with depression, social stigma and loss of self-esteem. Complications of wart treatments are also quite common, he said. The double-blind study included 4,065 healthy men aged 16-26 years, spanning 71 sites in 18 countries. Of those patients, 85 percent reported having exclusively female sexual partners, with the remainder self-identified as having sex with men.--The men were tested at the onset of the trial for previous exposure to each strain and were randomly selected to receive either a placebo or a vaccine that targeted HPV strains 6, 11, 16 and 18. Men with a history of anal or genital warts or lesions were excluded. Participants then received six follow-up examinations over the following three years to assess the vaccine's effectiveness. In addition to preventing warts, the vaccine also effectively prevented HPV-persistent infection in 86 percent of the participants without previous exposure."This is the first study to show that this vaccine works in boys," Giuliano said. "As long as we have a poor record of vaccinations in girls, boys should also be vaccinated."--Vaccinating boys also should help prevent HPV transmission to women, as well as transmission from men to men, she said, and help reduce the incidence of the virus throughout the general population. This could be particularly significant, Palefsky added, since only 30 to 40 percent of teenage girls in the U.S. have received even one of the three recommended doses of the vaccine.--The authors noted that while they find it likely that the prevention of HPV infection and disease in men will have additional benefits, such as preventing anal, genital and throat cancers, these benefits need to be directly demonstrated through further clinical trials. The international trial included physicians and patients in four U.S. medical centers, as well as in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Mexico, Norway, Peru and Taiwan. The project was supported by grants from both public and private sources. The trial was designed by the sponsor, Merck & Co, Inc., in collaboration with external investigators and an external data and safety monitoring board.

Recipe for Bioflavonoid Extract—Take a lemon ( Unsprayed –I get mine from az From friends who have lemon or grapefruit or orange trees) peel the skins off and the whites—Orrrrrr Juice the whole lemon and leave the grinded leftover---what you will do then is take the citrus and begin to add to 1 ˝ cup of alcohol –and blend at high speed for 10 minutes—strain –add this fusion back in and add new material and re blend again just adding another 2 oz of alcohol and repeat this 2-3 times---when done you will have extracted the components out of the skins and whites which are the Bioflavonoids of the Citrus.
A 2-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 120 individuals with recurrent hemorrhoid flare-ups found that treatment with combined diosmin and hesperidin significantly reduced the frequency and severity of hemorrhoid attacks.21 Another double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 100 individuals had positive results with the same bioflavonoids in relieving symptoms once a flare-up of hemorrhoid pain had begun. A 90-day, double-blind trial of 100 individuals with bleeding hemorrhoids also found significant benefits for both treatment of acute attacks and prevention of new ones. Finally, this bioflavonoid combination was found to compare favorably with surgical treatment of hemorrhoids. However, less impressive results were seen in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in which all participants were given a fiber laxative with either combined diosmin and hesperidin or placebo.
A 2-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 200 people with relatively severe chronic venous insufficiency found that treatment with diosmin/hesperidin significantly improved symptoms as compared to placebo.
Another double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of diosmin/hesperidin enrolled 101 people with relatively mild chronic venous insufficiency. The results showed little difference between the two groups; the authors theorize that diosmin/hesperidin might be more effective in severe chronic venous insufficiency.
ŘA 2-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial evaluated the effects of diosmin/hesperidin in 107 people with nonhealing leg ulcers (sores) caused by venous insufficiency or other conditions. The results indicated that treatment significantly improved the rate of healing.
Also, a 3-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 67 individuals evaluated buckwheat tea (a good source of rutin) for chronic venous insufficiency.27 The results showed less leg swelling in the treated group.
One study supposedly showed that the supplement oxyrutin is more effective than diosmin/hesperidin for chronic venous insufficiency, but the study was not effective due to procedure
Some people bruise particularly easily due to fragile capillaries. A 6-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 96 people with this condition found that combined diosmin and hesperidin decreased symptoms of capillary fragility, such as bruising and nosebleeds. --Two studies from the 1960s found benefits with a combination of vitamin C and citrus bioflavonoids for decreasing bruising in collegiate athletes.
Breast cancer surgery sometimes causes persistent swelling of the arm (lymphedema) caused by damage to lymph vessels. Citrus bioflavonoids as well as other natural supplements have shown promise for this condition. In a 3-month, double-blind study, 57 women with lymphedema received either placebo or combination therapy consisting of the modified citrus bioflavonoid trimethylhesperidin chalcone plus the bioflavonoid-rich herb butcher’s broom. The results indicated that use of the bioflavonoid combination resulted in significantly less swelling.
In a review of 12 studies involving over 5,000 cases, researchers found that people who consumed the highest amounts of flavonoids in their diets had a lower risk of lung cancer than those who consumed less. The significance of these results is weakened by the fact that none of the studies were controlled trials, and the most favorable among them did not account for the quantity of fruits, vegetables, or vitamins in the participants' diets.
Some other Uses—
As noted above, all flavonoids are potentially useful as antioxidants, antivirals, and anti-inflammatories. These properties provide you with the specific potential benefits of bioflavonoids such as:
• lower cholesterol level
• stronger blood vessels
• improved circulation
• relief from asthma
• relief from allergy symptoms
• protection against cancer
• protection against infections
• protection against cavities
• prevention of gum disease
• improved liver function
• improved brain function
• younger-looking skin
• relief from hemorrhoids
• treatment and prevention of menstrual disorders
• improved vision and prevention of eye diseases
• removal of heavy metals from your body

Nobiletin seems to be a very noble phytochemical with many potential health benefits. The most studied properties of nobiletin are its anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activities. Nobiletin also helps to lower cholesterol levels and some studies indicate that it may improve impaired memory loss and treat acne.
Numerous in-vivo and in-vitro studies have demonstrated the anti-inflammatory activity of nobiletin and its metabolites. Nobiletin acts directly as an antioxidant but also interferes with biological inflammatory processes. It inhibits the expression of genes involved in inflammation by blocking the binding of NF-kappaB with DNA. One study showed that nobiletin reduced airway inflammation of asthmatic rats. Treatment of skin cells with nobiletin also reduced inflammation caused by ultraviolet-B radiation.
The anti-cancer properties of nobiletin are supported by many scientific studies. Nobiletin act by its antiproliferation effect without being toxic to normal cells. Favourable results have been obtained on cancer cell lines of the liver, stomach, prostate and colon.
A study with cultured macrophages demonstrated the cholesterol lowering and atherosclerosis inhibiting properties of nobiletin. Nobiletin also inhibits the formation of macrophage foam cells, macrophages loaded wit lipids, which build up on artery walls.
One study on a mice model showed that nobiletin my help to improve memory loss. The brains of the mice were chirurgically altered to obtain models of Alzheimer disease. It is not known if nobiletin improves the condition of human Alzheimer patients.
We found one study showing that nobiletin inhibited sebum production on hamsters and inhibited the proliferation of sebocytes, the cells that form the sebaceous gland. This observation led the researchers to conclude that nobiletin could be used as a drug for acne treatment.

when you read it.
ON JULY 20, 1969, AS COMMANDER OF THE APOLLO 11 LUNAR MODULE, NEIL ARMSTRONG—WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO SET FOOT ON THE MOON.---HIS FIRST WORDS AFTER STEPPING ON THE MOON, “THAT’S ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN,-ONE GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND,” WERE TELEVISED TO EARTH AND HEARD BY MILLIONS.*BUT JUST BEFORE HE RE-ENTERED THE LANDER, HE MADE THE ENIGMATIC REMARK “GOOD LUCK, MR.. GORSKY”.MANY PEOPLE AT NASA THOUGHT IT WAS A CASUAL REMARK CONCERNING SOME RIVAL SOVIET COSMONAUT. HOWEVER, UPON CHECKING, THERE WAS NO GORSKY IN EITHER THE RUSSIAN OR AMERICAN SPACE PROGRAMS. OVER THE YEARS MANY PEOPLE QUESTIONED ARMSTRONG AS TO WHAT THE ‘GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY’ STATEMENT MEANT, BUT ARMSTRONG ALWAYS JUST SMILED. ON JULY 5, 1995, IN TAMPA BAY, FLORIDA, WHILE ANSWERING QUESTIONS FOLLOWING A SPEECH, A REPORTER BROUGHT UP THE 26- YEAR-OLD QUESTION TO ARMSTRONG. THIS TIME HE FINALLY RESPONDED. MR. GORSKY HAD DIED, SO NEIL ARMSTRONG FELT HE COULD NOW ANSWER THE QUESTION. IN 1938, WHEN HE WAS A KID IN A SMALL MID-WESTERN TOWN, HE WAS PLAYING BASEBALL WITH A FRIEND IN THE BACKYARD. HIS FRIEND HIT THE BALL, WHICH LANDED IN HIS NEIGHBOR’S YARD BY THEIR BEDROOM WINDOW. HIS NEIGHBORS WERE MR. AND MRS. GORSKY. AS HE LEANED DOWN TO PICK UP THE BALL, YOUNG ARMSTRONG HEARD MRS. GORSKY SHOUTING AT MR. GORSKY. “SEX! YOU WANT SEX?! YOU’LL GET SEX WHEN THE KID NEXT DOOR WALKS ON THE MOON!”

These persistent contrails - as the officials like to call them, are filled with dangerous chemicals, heavy metals, polymer fibers, mycoplasmas and biotoxins, greatly effecting the health and quality of life of those who are breathing them; that is you and your family, your friends, your pets, even your plants.
IIThe politicians do nothing. The media remain silent. It is just unbelievable the inattention this is receiving. I
IIIIAccording to a television station which paid to have these chemicals tested, there are many, sometimes thousands times more - than the allowable amount of barium powders and aluminum oxides, plus ethylene dibromide, arsenic, iron, boron, manganese, magnesium, potassium, sodium, copper, zinc, nickel, thorium, zirconium, titanium, chromium, cadmium, strontium, polymers, mycoplasma and biotoxins in these chemical releases. Toxic levels! (a recent Arizona air sample analysis (all elements) showed 12,800,000 PPB for Aluminum.) Incredible. That's 12 million parts per billion! 6,400 times the toxic limit!
Analysis report here: http://www.nogw.com/images/052008_chemtrail_lab_result_lg.jpg
and here: http://www.rense.com/general82/chemit.htm
In the latest Phoenix air-particulate analysis, aluminum particulates in the ambient air have tested at 19,500 times the toxic limit, iron at 28,333 times the toxic limit, barium at 1,050 times the toxic limit, and manganese at 4,870 times the toxic limit, among many other metals at toxic levels.

Pseudomonas fluorescens, streptomyces, brucellosis and mycoplasma found in chemtrails--By WilliamThomas (scroll down to flu epidemics) http://www.consumerhealth.org/articles/display.cfm?ID=20000830164825
"During this time most of us have been ill with something that doesn't quite act like the flu because it holds on for weeks and months at a time, seems to get better, and then returns. It is very hard to shake."
Pneumonic plague following aerial spraying in the Ukraine
Scientific studies have shown that exposure to barium, a major chemical component in these aerosol releases, breaks down immune systems, producing a receptive environment for any lab-generated recombinant flu-virus which has "accidently" appeared in the population.
Whether intentional or not, the data shows chemtrails and vaccine adjuvants are weakening our immune systems, making us susceptible to illness. Illness delivered in prepared pandemics which keep creeping into the population with slight modifications, each demanding another tainted, untested vaccination: first as swine flu, then SARS, then bird flu, then a recombinant bird/swine/human flu. These vaccines are used as delivery mechanisms, tested on the public tainted with squalene, mercury, aluminum, polysorbate 80 and live viruses. Besides destroying immune systems, these additives often cause illness, paralysis, even death.
Big pharma and the CDC will demand each of you take these untested vaccines. They will work to make them mandatory and the collaborative news media will be echoing the mantra "get the shot, get the shot" - all the while having stripped hapless victims of this vaccine of any legal recourse against the pharmaceutical industry.

PAPAYA--
Papain is a protein-cleaving enzyme derived from papaya and certain other plants. Enzymes are complex molecules produced in living organisms to catalyze (speed up) chemical reactions within the cell. A number of digestive enzyme supplements are available. The simple ones are extracted from tropical fruits: bromelain from pineapple and papain from papayas. Papain has a mild, soothing effect on the stomach and aids in protein digestion. It is most often used as a meat tenderizer.
As we can see the uses for papain are diverse and thus it makes it an extremely valuable enzyme. Papain has been employed to treat ulcers, dissolve membranes in diphtheria, and reduce swelling, fever and adhesions after surgery. With considerable risk, it has been applied on meat impacted in the gullet. Chemopapain is sometimes injected in cases of slipped spinal discs or pinched nerves. Precautions should be taken because some individuals are allergic to papain in any form and even to meat tenderized with papain. In tropical folk medicine, the fresh latex is smeared on boils, warts and freckles and given as a vermifuge. In India, it is applied on the uterus as an irritant to cause abortion. The unripe fruit is sometimes hazardously ingested to achieve abortion. Seeds, too, may bring on abortion. They are often taken as an emmenagogue ( menustration) and given as a vermifuge( worm expeller). The root is ground to a paste with salt, diluted with water and given as an enema to induce abortion. A root decoction is claimed to expel roundworms. Roots are also used to make salt. Crushed leaves wrapped around tough meat will tenderize it overnight. The leaf also functions as a vermifuge ( worm expeller)and as a primitive soap substitute in laundering. Dried leaves have been smoked to relieve asthma or as a tobacco substitute. Packages of dried, pulverized leaves are sold by "health food" stores for making tea, despite the fact that the leaf decoction is administered as a purgative for horses in Ghana and in the Ivory Coast it is a treatment for genito-urinary ailments. The dried leaf infusion is taken for stomach troubles in Ghana and they say it is purgative and may cause abortion. bacteria. Strong doses are effective against gram-negative bacteria. The substance has protein-like properties. The fresh crushed seeds yield the aglycone of glucotropaeolin benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) which is bacteriostatic, bactericidal and fungicidal. A single effective does is 4-5 g seeds (25-30 mg BITC). In a London hospital in 1977, a post-operative infection in a kidney-transplant patient was cured by strips of papaya which were laid on the wound and left for 48 hours, after all modern medications had failed. Plant extracts with a high content of proteolytic enzymes have been used for a long time in traditional medicine. Besides proteolytic enzymes from plants, 'modern' enzyme therapy additionally includes pancreatic enzymes. The therapeutic use of proteolytic enzymes is partly based on scientific studies and is partly empirical. The aim of the current review is to provide an overview of clinical trials of systemic enzyme therapy in oncology, and to discuss the evidence for their possible mechanisms of action. Clinical studies of the use of proteolytic enzymes in oncology have mostly been carried out on an enzyme preparation consisting of a combination of papain, trypsin and chymotrypsin. This review of these studies owed that enzyme therapy can reduce the adverse effects caused by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. There is also evidence that, in some types of tumours, survival may be prolonged. The beneficial effect of systemic enzyme therapy seems to be based on its anti-inflammatory potential. However, the precise mechanism of action of systemic enzyme therapy remains unsolved. The ratio of proteinases to antiproteinases, which is increasingly being used as a prognostic marker in oncology, appears to be influenced by the oral administration of proteolytic enzymes, probably via an induction of the synthesis of antiproteinases. Furthermore, there are numerous alterations of cytokine composition during therapy with orally administered enzymes, which might be an indication of the efficacy of enzyme therapy.
Health Benefits of Papaya
Papayas is a pear shaped tropical fruit and than be as long as 7 to 20 inches. This fruit is available in the market throughout the year, but most abundant during the summer.
Nutritive values : Per 100 gm. Vitamin A : 1,750 I.U Vitamin C : 56 mg. Calcium : 20 mg. Phosphorus : 16 mg. Potassium : 470 mg. Carbohydrates : 10 gm Calories : 39 Also contains Vitamin E and K
Health Benefits of Papaya :Papaya contains the digestive enzyme papain that is why it is valuable for aiding digestion. The ripe fruit is easily digestible and prevents constipation. It is shown in a study that this fruit when taken alone for 3 days has a beneficial tonic effect in the stomach and intestines. Papaya juice helps in relieving infections of the colon and can help break down pus and mucus. May help prevent cancer in organs and glands with epithelial tissue (ripe papaya). Prevents nausea (includes morning sickness and motion sickness). Taken 230 cc. Of papaya juice or pineapple juice. Slices of green fruits rubbed over meat and boiled with tough meat, make the meat more tender. The seeds are antihelmintic, for expelling worms and they are given with honey. Chew and swallow two teaspoonful of seeds after each principal meal (three times a day).

Recipe for Papaya Extract and Ferment
Take a ripe papaya and peel of outer layer with a potato peeler or thin knife—split the papaya and scoop out the seeds—SAVE THE SEEDS!!!!! Then add 1cup to 1 ˝ cup of either a rice wine or a white wine or a clear alcohol of choice ( grappa-spirtus-everclear-gin-vodka) and add cinnamon to this as well about 1 tsp per cycle.
You will add about 2-3 ounces of papaya per cycle, Meaning you will put this in then strain it and then add the strained fluid back in the blender and add another 2-3 oz and repeat this procedure till you use up all the papaya--You will blend all this for about 5 minutes at high speed and from there proceed to strain through a handkerchief or pillow case ( reason being the cheese cloths will leak this is dense and will require a good grip) pour back into the blender the strained material and repeat the process
For the Ferment you can take the papaya and sprinkle on it cinnamon and tumeric and paprika add vinegar and allow to sit forseveral weeks in fridge and allow for the ferment to take hold and consume as desired especially after a heavy meal of fat or protein—or you can strain it out as previous and add vinegar to this and allow to sit for several days and then use tablespoon amounts again best to be taken after a meal or for healing an issue or imbalance—this will increase the SOD levels as well which is an extremely potent antioxidant that can protect eyes and brain and liver from infectious issues

Manufacturing of Intravenous Vitamin C Banned
As you may be aware the largest manufacturers of L Ascor 500, McGuff Pharmaceuticals, has received a notice from the FDA to cease manufacturing the product on December 28th 2010.
http://www.fda.gov/ICECI/EnforcementActions/WarningLetters/ucm238251.htm
McGuff Pharmaceuticals is the largest manufacturer of the product and probably the largest supplier to New Zealand. This could mean the product will be harder to source until other manufacturers build their supply.[U1]
We have been in contact with the CEO of McGuff to seek clarification of what has occurred and this was one of the responses: “The FDA told McGuff Pharmaceuticals, Inc. to stop “manufacturing and distribution” of Ascorbic Acid injection. However, the FDA may use its discretionary authority to allow it back into the market[U2]. We just do not know what the FDA’s intentions are as the FDA will not provide policy information.”
You’ll note the date is only a few months after Allen Smith’s story of recovery from Swine Flue and Hairy Cell Leukaemia (using L Ascor 500) went global. We are in the process of assessing the impact to New Zealand and our campaign, so any of your ideas would be appreciated.

FDA warns niacin marketers about drug claims
The Food and Drug Administration has affirmed the principal that references to scientific studies can amount to drug claims under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA).
In a January 19, 2011, warning letter to Minnesota-based Upsher Smith Laboratories, the FDA rapped the company over scientific web references that were linked cardiovascular and cholesterol benefits for the company’s niacin-based dietary supplements. Upsher Smith Laboratories has subsequently taken the website for Slo-Niacin products offline.
“The therapeutic claims on your website establish that the product is a drug because it is intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease,” wrote FDA director from the Minneapolis District, Gerald J Berg.[U3]
Diseased citations
Berg went on to highlight the problem of companies referencing scientific studies in online marketing materials.
“Furthermore, the ‘References’ and ‘In the News’ sections of your website for this product cite a number of articles about the usefulness of the ingredient niacin in treating and preventing diseases,” he wrote.
“When scientific publications are used commercially by the seller of a product to promote the product to consumers, such publications may become evidence of the product’s intended use. For example, under 21 CFR 101.93(g)(2)(iv)(C), [of the FDCA] a citation of a publication or reference in the labeling of a product is considered to be a claim about disease treatment or prevention if the citation refers to a disease use, and if, in the context of the labeling as a whole, the citation implies treatment or prevention of a disease.”
Claims at stake
Claims being made on the retracted site included:
SLO-NIACIN…Reduced
risk of cardiovascular events* when combined with a statin
• SLO-NIACIN…Halted stenosis progression when combined with a statin.
• Niacin is clinically proven to help manage cholesterol levels, a major factor
in heart health
• SLO-NIACIN Offers an affordable option for Cholesterol Management
• Niacin is the oldest of today’s commonly used agents for lowering cholesterol
• See how…niacin complements statin therapy for heart health
The FDA cited numerous examples of studies that contributed to disease marketing including a 1992 study published in the American Journal of Cardiology titled: ‘Marked benefit with sustained-release niacin therapy in patients with ‘isolated’ very low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and coronary artery disease.’
The letter qualified the drug accusations by noting that Slo-Niacin did not have generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status for use as a food ingredient.
It also highlights several images used on the Slo-Niacin website that can also, “be considered as a claim to diagnose, mitigate, treat, cure, or prevent disease if in the context of the labeling it suggests that the product has an effect on a disease or diseases.”
Niacin, vitamin B3, has been shown to benefit atherosclerosis at high doses by reducing total cholesterol, triglycerides, very-low-density lipoprotein, and low-density lipoprotein.

ScienceDaily (Mar. 7, 2009) — Drinking one glass of wine a day may lower the risk of Barrett's Esophagus by 56 percent, according to a new study by the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in the March issue of Gastroenterology. Barrett's Esophagus is a precursor to esophageal cancer, the nation's fastest growing cancer with an incidence rate that's jumped 500 percent in the last 30 years.---Barrett's Esophagus affects 5 percent of the population and occurs when heartburn or acid reflux permanently damages the esophageal lining. People with Barrett's Esophagus have a 30- to 40-fold higher risk of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma (a type of esophageal cancer) because the Barrett's Esophagus cells can grow into cancer cells.---Because there are no symptoms or warning signs of Barrett's Esophagus, people discover they have Barrett's Esophagus when an endoscopy for anemia, heartburn or a bleeding ulcer reveals esophageal cells that were damaged, then changed form during the healing process. Currently nothing can be done to treat Barrett's Esophagus; it can only be monitored.
This is the first and largest population-based study to examine the connection between alcohol consumption and risk of Barrett's Esophagus. Funded in part by the National Institutes of Health, the Kaiser Permanente study looked at 953 men and women in Northern California between 2002 and 2005 and found that people who drank one or more glasses of red or white wine a day had less than half the risk (or 56 percent reduced risk) of Barrett's Esophagus. There was no reduction of Barrett's Esophagus risk among people who drank beer or liquor.--"The rate of esophageal adenocarcinoma in this country is skyrocketing yet very little is known about its precursor, Barrett's Esophagus. We are trying to figure out how to prevent changes that may lead to esophageal cancer." said Douglas A. Corley, MD, a Kaiser Permanente gastroenterologist and the study's principal investigator.
The study findings are echoed by two other studies published in the same issue of the Gastroenterology journal: Australian researchers found that people who drank wine were at a lower risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma, and Irish researchers found that people who drank wine were at a lower risk for esophagitis, an irritation of the esophagus that follows chronic heartburn and often precedes Barrett's Esophagus and cancer.---Researchers are not certain why wine reduces the risk of Barrett's Esophagus and esophageal cancer. One theory is that the wine's antioxidants neutralize the oxidative damage caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease, a risk factor for Barrett's Esophagus. Another theory is that wine drinkers typically consume food with their wine as opposed to drinking straight liquor without food, thereby reducing the potentially damaging effect of alcohol on esophageal tissue, said Ai Kubo, MD, an epidemiologist at Kaiser Permanente and lead author on the study. "But we cannot preclude the possibility that wine drinking is a proxy for other 'health-seeking' behavior," Kubo added.
This study is part of larger, case-controlled Kaiser Permanente study led by Dr. Corley that looked at abdominal obesity and consumption of dietary antioxidants, fruits and vegetables in connection with Barrett's Esophagus. It found that people can reduce their risk of Barrett's Esophagus by eating eight servings of fruits and vegetables a day and maintaining a normal body weight.--"My advice to people trying to prevent Barrett's Esophagus is: keep a normal body weight and follow a diet high in antioxidants and high in fruits and vegetables," Corley said. "We already knew that red wine was good for the heart, so perhaps here is another added benefit of a healthy lifestyle and a single glass of wine a day."--Researchers noted, though, that the protective effect of wine in terms of preventing Barrett's Esophagus was greatest with just one or two glasses a day. The protective effect of wine did not increase with higher consumption.--"It's not actually clear that treating the acid reflux will necessarily prevent getting someone from getting Barrett's Esophagus," said Dr. Corley. "The best way to prevent reflux is to maintain a normal weight." Authors of the study include: Ai Kubo, T. R. Levin, Gregory Rumore, Charles P. Quesenberry, Jr., of the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, Gladys Block and Patricia Buffler of the School of Public Health, University of California-Berkeley.

Drinking Wine May Increase Survival Among Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Patients
ScienceDaily (Apr. 24, 2009) — Pre-diagnostic wine consumption may reduce the risk of death and relapse among non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients, according to an epidemiology study presented at the American Association for Cancer Research 100th Annual Meeting 2009.--Xuesong Han, the first author of the abstract and a doctoral candidate at the Yale School of Public Health, said their findings would need to be replicated before any public health recommendations are made, but the evidence is becoming clearer that moderate consumption of wine has numerous benefits."This conclusion is controversial, because excessive drinking has a negative social and health impact, and it is difficult to define what is moderate and what is excessive," said Han. "However, we are continually seeing a link between wine and positive outcomes in many cancers."--This study was the first to examine the link among patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Han and her colleagues analyzed data about 546 women with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.--They found that those who drank wine had a 76 percent five-year survival compared with 68 percent for non-wine drinkers. Further research found five-year, disease-free survival was 70 percent among those who drank wine compared with 65 percent among non-wine drinkers.--Beer and/or liquor consumption did not show a benefit. The study team at Yale also looked at subgroups of lymphoma patients, and found the strongest link between wine consumption and favorable outcomes among patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. These patients had a 40 to 50 percent reduced risk of death, relapse or secondary cancer.-Researchers then conducted an analysis to examine the effect of wine consumption among those who had drunk wine for at least the previous 25 years before diagnosis. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients who had been drinking wine for at least this long had a 25 to 35 percent reduced risk of death, relapse or secondary cancer.--Those patients with large B-cell lymphoma had about 60 percent reduced risk of death, relapse or secondary cancer if they had been drinking wine for at least the previous 25 years before diagnosis.--"It is clear that lifestyle factors like alcohol can affect outcome," said Han. -Story Source-The above story is reprinted (with editorial adaptations by ScienceDaily staff) from materials provided by American Association for Cancer Research

Red Wine Protects The Prostate -Study
ScienceDaily (May 26, 2007) — Researchers have found that men who drink an average of four to seven glasses of red wine per week are only 52% as likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer as those who do not drink red wine, reports the June 2007 issue of Harvard Men’s Health Watch. In addition, red wine appears particularly protective against advanced or aggressive cancers.--Researchers in Seattle collected information about many factors that might influence the risk of prostate cancer in men between ages 40 and 64, including alcohol consumption. At first the results for alcohol consumption seemed similar to the findings of many earlier studies: There was no relationship between overall consumption and risk. --But the scientists went one step further by evaluating each type of alcoholic beverage independently. Here the news was surprising—wine drinking was linked to a reduced risk of prostate cancer. And when white wine was compared with red, red had the most benefit. Even low amounts seemed to help, and for every additional glass of red wine per week, the relative risk declined by 6%. Why red wine? Doctors don’t know. But much of the speculation focuses on chemicals—including various flavonoids and resveratrol—missing from other alcoholic beverages. These components have antioxidant properties, and some appear to counterbalance androgens, the male hormones that stimulate the prostate.--Many doctors are reluctant to recommend drinking alcohol for health, fearing that their patients might assume that if a little alcohol is good, a lot might be better. The Harvard Men’s Health Watch notes that men who enjoy alcohol and can drink in moderation and responsibly may benefit from a lower risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and cardiac death.

Researchers found that men who drank only wine, and less than half a glass of it a day, lived around 2.5 years longer than those who drank beer and spirits, and almost five years longer than those who drank no alcohol at all --ScienceDaily (Apr. 30, 2009) — Drinking up to half a glass of wine a day may boost life expectancy by five years—at least in men, suggests research published ahead of print in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. The Dutch authors base their findings on a total of 1,373 randomly selected men whose cardiovascular health and life expectancy at age 50 were repeatedly monitored between 1960 and 2000. The researchers looked into how much alcohol the men drank, what type it was, and over what period, in a bid to assess whether this had any impact on the risks of their dying from cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, and from all causes.
They also tracked weight and diet, whether the men smoked, and for how long, and checked for the presence of serious illness.--During the 40 years of monitoring, 1,130 of the men died. Over half the deaths were caused by cardiovascular disease.--The proportion of men who drank alcohol almost doubled from 45% in 1960 to 86% in 2000, with the proportion of those drinking wine soaring from 2% to 44% during that period.--The researchers found that light long term alcohol consumption of all types—up to 20 g a day— extended life by around two extra years compared with no alcohol at all. Extended life expectancy was slightly less for those who drank more than 20 g.--And men who drank only wine, and less than half a glass of it a day, lived around 2.5 years longer than those who drank beer and spirits, and almost five years longer than those who drank no alcohol at all.--Drinking wine was strongly associated with a lower risk of dying from coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and death from all causes.--These results held true, irrespective of socioeconomic status, dietary and other lifestyle habits, factors long thought to influence the association between wine drinking and better health.

Confirmed--- Mercury Cancels Out the Health Benefits of Fish Oil
Submitted by Annie White on January 24, 2011

Omega oils have seen a lot of attention for their benefits to brain function and fish oil is a major source of the nutrient. But there is a problem with eating fish as environmental pollutants have caused marine life to become laden with chemicals by the time they reach maturity for fishing.--Mercury is one of the biggest chemical threats to humans as it is incredibly harmful to the brain, causing degradation of the neurons thereby crippling the minds functional capacity.--So the fish have the omega oils that are great for the brain while at the same time containing mercury which will diminish brain function. Thankfully there are alternatives to its sources that don’t rely on fish- check the list at the bottom of the article and encourage environmental practices that reduce mercury pollution.
~Health Freedoms
Lately, a shadow has perched itself over the fish oil industry. While no one disputes the benefits of a diet rich in omega fatty acids, Rachel wrote about a number of studies pointing to myths associated with fish oil. Most recently, a new study was released that confirms that any benefits that come from fish oil are cancelled out but excessive mercury in the system. According to Environmental Health News, methyl mercury is transferred to people who eat the fish, which is especially concerning for pregnant women whose children are exposed while developing in the womb. The study, published in Environmental Research, said this-“Of the five nutritional components evaluated, only the beneficial effects of DHA – as measured by the children’s test scores – were negatively impacted by increased mercury exposure. The nutritional benefits of DHA were significantly reduced and then disappeared altogether at the higher exposures.”--Bottom line: DHA, an omega fatty acid chain has many health benefits but when paired with mercury-laden fish oil, those benefits are cancelled out by the side effects of mercury poisoning.
Why We Still Need Omega Fatty Acids--No one’s disputing the benefits of the omega fatty acids found in fish oil. These are truly important to the body. They regulate blood clotting, blood pressure, blood lipid levels, and the body’s response to injury and infection. Likely one of the most important benefits is that it greatly reduces inflammation associated with heart disease. But paired with the mercury found in a wide variety of favored fish species like tuna, grouper, or mackerel the mercury exposure makes it not worth the risk.[U1]
Omega 3 Fatty Acids Minus the Mercury
Omega 3 is made up of three acids EPA, DHA, and ALA. ALA can be found in hemp seeds, flax seeds, and chia seeds. DHA and EPA are found in algae, spirulina, blue-green algae, and chlorella.

Processed Food Diet in Early Childhood May Lower Subsequent IQ
ScienceDaily (Feb. 8, 2011) — A diet, high in fats, sugars, and processed foods in early childhood may lower IQ, while a diet packed full of vitamins and nutrients may do the opposite, suggests research published online in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.--The authors base their findings on participants in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), which is tracking the long term health and wellbeing of around 14,000 children born in 1991 and 1992.--Parents completed questionnaires, detailing the types and frequency of the food and drink their children consumed when they were 3, 4, 7 and 8.5 years old.--Three dietary patterns were identified: "processed" high in fats and sugar intake; "traditional" high in meat and vegetable intake; and "health conscious" high in salad, fruit and vegetables, rice and pasta. Scores were calculated for each pattern for each child.--IQ was measured using a validated test (the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children) when they were 8.5 years old. In all, complete data were available for just under 4,000 children.--The results showed that after taking account of potentially influential factors, a predominantly processed food diet at the age of 3 was associated with a lower IQ at the age of 8.5, irrespective of whether the diet improved after that age. Every 1 point increase in dietary pattern score was associated with a 1.67 fall in IQ. On the other hand, a healthy diet was associated with a higher IQ at the age of 8.5, with every 1 point increase in dietary pattern linked to a 1.2 increase in IQ. Dietary patterns between the ages of 4 and 7 had no impact on IQ.--The authors say that these findings, although modest, are in line with previous ALSPAC research showing an association between early childhood diet and later behaviour and school performance. "This suggests that any cognitive/behavioural effects relating to eating habits in early childhood may well persist into later childhood, despite any subsequent changes (including improvements) to dietary intake," they say.--The brain grows at its fastest rate during the first three years of life, say the authors, by way of a possible explanation for the findings, adding that other research has indicated that head growth at this time is linked to intellectual ability.--"It is possible that good nutrition during this period may encourage optimal brain growth," they suggest, advocating further research to determine the extent of the effect early diet has on intelligence.--Story Source-The above story is reprinted (with editorial adaptations by ScienceDaily staff) from materials provided by BMJ-British Medical Journal, via EurekAlert!, a service of AAAS.--Journal Reference-K. Dietary inorganic nitrates, as found in green leafy vegetables and beetroot juice, may enhance muscle endurance by boosting mitochondrial efficiency, according to new research.
The study, published in Cell Metabolism, reports that short term increases in dietary nitrates can boost muscle efficiency during exercise, and finds that the that the improved performance is linked to increased efficiency of the mitochondria that power our cells. ---Mitochondrial efficiency is usually measured as the amount of oxygen consumed per adenosine triphosphate (ATP) produced – a measure known as the P/O ratio. The new study shows that nitrate “has profound effects on basal human mitochondrial function as well as whole-body oxygen consumption during exercise.” -“In the current study we found a 19 percent increase in P/O ratio after nitrate supplementation. To our knowledge, there are no other dietary regimes described that have this effect,” said the researchers, led by Professor Eddie Weitzberg from the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. --“Intriguingly, there was a strong correlation between the reduction in whole-body oxygen consumption during cycling and the increase in P/O ratio, which clearly suggests that a large part of the improved exercise efficiency is taking place at the mitochondrial level,” he added. ---Dietary nitrates ------Until recently nitrate – which is abundant in green leafy vegetables – had been considered merely as an inert end product of nitric oxide (NO) metabolism or as a potentially toxic constituent in our diet. --However, the last decade has brought understanding of its importance in biological processes, including regulation of blood flow , blood pressure , cellular signaling, glucose homeostasis, and tissue responses to low oxygen levels (hypoxia). --Previous research has also linked nitrate rich foods and beverages, like beetroot juice , to improvements physiological benefits – including improved endurance . Such benefits have been shown to be, at least in part, due to a reduction in the ‘oxygen cost’ of exercise for healthy individuals after short-term dietary supplementation with nitrate. --Weitzberg and colleagues noted that the findings point toward the mitochondria (the ‘energy factories’ of cells) as a possible target for the effects of nitrate – suggesting that the production of ATP (an important transporter of chemical energy) may become more efficient. However, such mechanisms remain unclear and relatively unknown. --The new study, a double-blind crossover trial, studied the effects of a dietary intervention with inorganic nitrate on mitochondrial function and whole-body oxygen consumption in healthy volunteers. --Improved efficiency --Skeletal muscle biopsies were in conjunction with bicycle exercise tests were used to study the effects of dietary nitrate on mitochondrial efficiency and biochemical parameters, in addition to the expression of proteins involved in energy transfer. --The researchers reported that after taking a small dose of inorganic nitrate for three days volunteers consumed less oxygen while riding an exercise bike. --They said that skeletal muscle mitochondria after nitrate supplementation showed an improvement in efficiency (P/O ratio), which was strongly correlated to the reduction in oxygen cost during exercise. --These effects were found to accompany a reduction in ANT – an important protein involved in mitochondrial energy production. --“The fact that the relatively short term dietary regimen can influence expression of important mitochondrial proteins may have profound impact on exercise physiology,” said Weitzberg. --“Moreover, it may also have implications for metabolic and cardiovascular diseases in which dysfunctional mitochondria play a central role,” he added. --Weitzberg said that the “natural next step” is to repeat the experiment in people with conditions linked to mitochondrial dysfunction, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease, to see if they too enjoy such positive results. --He added that further studies to identify the molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways by which nitrate affects mitochondrial efficiency are clearly needed.
ROS risk?
In an accompanying editorial Dr Sreekumaran Nair and his colleagues from the Mayo Clinic, note that the study provides strong evidence that short-term dietary nitrate supplementation enhances mitochondrial efficiency and enhances exercise performance. However they added that future studies should also address the impact of nitrates on mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. --“It is difficult to ignore the possibility that improved coupling may lead to increased ROS production rates, which may have an adverse effect on proteins, DNA, and cellular functions,” they said.

Health food store owners are warning they will be forced to close down after April 30 this year, when the European Union Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive (THMPD) kicks in.
Companies have had a seven year-grace period since the THMPD entered EU law books in 2004, but EU-wide registrations under the regulation have been chronically low, meaning unless thousands of products register in the coming months, they will be stripped from health store and other retail shelves. ---Selwyn Soe of the London-based The Herbal Factory told the BBC: “Unfortunately it looks as if we will have to close down because of this legislation.” --“The problem for us is that although we would have to pay many thousands of pounds for a licence to keep making each product, unlike a drug company we would not have a licence to make that product exclusively. It just will not be worth paying out the money.” --The regulation requires all herbal products making health and medicinal claims to be registered. As of December 31, 2010, there had been 187 registrations for individual products in the UK. Eighty four products had been approved and none rejected. The 100 per cent success rate has been attracting the interest of food supplement manufacturers and herbal ingredient suppliers who have struggled to have their science accepted under the 2006 nutrition and health claims regulation (NHCR). But herbal sector observers and associations have been surprised by the lack of THMPD registration applications – with the UK leading the way, followed by Germany, but many member states recording no applications at all. The relative high cost of registrations is deemed as partly to blame for the situation. --The fact that there is a clear discrepancy between the way science is treated under the THMPD and the NHCR has caused some confusion, and was partially responsible for the European Commission recently removing botanicals from the NHCR process to reconsider how science in the sector should be treated. That issue is unlikely to be revisited until the end of 2011.

Juice made from Montmorency cherries may boost the recovery of muscle strength after intensive exercise, says a new study from London. --The benefits of the juice are reportedly related to its antioxidant activity, which may reverse the “oxidative damage induced by the damaging exercise”, report researchers from the Sports and Exercise Science Research Centre at London South Bank University and UK Anti-Doping. --Writing in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, the London-based researchers report that seven days of consumption of the CherryActive-branded cherry juice prior to, and after intensive exercise produced a significant increase in recovery for knee extension maximum voluntary contractions, compared to an isoenergetic fruit concentrate control beverage. ---“Montmorency cherry juice consumption improved the recovery of isometric muscle strength after intensive exercise perhaps due to attenuation of the oxidative damage induced by the damaging exercise,” wrote the authors, led by Dr Joanna Bowtell.
Sports nutrition market --The study supports a number of other studies reporting the potential benefits of cherry, and tart cherries, in particular. Indeed, a previous study (Journal of Nutrition, 2006, Vol. 136, pp. 981-986) reported that daily consumption of 45 cherries could reduce circulating concentrations of inflammatory markers, with the researchers proposing that the flavonoids and anthocyanins in the cherries exert an anti-inflammatory effect and may lessen the damage response to exercise. --Study details --Dr Botwell and her co-workers recruited 10 well-trained men and assigned them to consume the cherry juice or the isoenergetic fruit concentrate beverage for one week before and for two days after a series of single leg knee extensions. --Results showed that the knee extension maximum voluntary contractions (MVC), a measure of muscle function, recovered significantly faster following consumption of the cherry juice, compared with the fruit control. Specifically, the MVC was 90.9 versus 84.9 24 hours after the exercise, and 92.9 versus 88.5 after 48 hours, respectively. No differences between the groups were observed for the activity of the enzyme creatine kinase, which is involved in the production of energy. --According to the researchers, the potential benefits may be linked to the antioxidant activity of the juice. During intense exercise the production levels of oxidative stress are reported to increase and this may damage muscles. However, this may be attenuated with consumption of the antioxidant-rich cherry juice.

Fenugreek have insulinotropic and antidiabetic properties
effect of fenugreek 4-hydroxyisoleucine on liver function biomarkers and glucose in diabetic and fructose-fed rats.
Phytother Res. 2009 Jan;23(1):61-4
Authors: Haeri MR, Izaddoost M, Ardekani MR, Nobar MR, White KN
Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum L) is a plant traditionally used for the treatment of diabetes. It contains an unusual amino acid, 4-hydroxyisoleucine, demonstrated to have insulinotropic and antidiabetic properties in animal models. Here we examine the effect of 4-hydroxyisoleucine on liver function and blood glucose in two rat models of insulin resistance, fructose-fed rats and streptozotocin-induced diabetes type 2. In fructose-fed rats, levels of glucose and liver damage marker aspartate transaminase were markedly (84% and 93%, respectively) and significantly elevated compared with controls (p < 0.001 for both). Alanine transaminase was elevated slightly (18%), and all markers were restored to near control values after treatment with 4-hydroxyisoleucine at 50 mg/kg per day for 8 weeks, the effect being significant (p < 0.01) for all markers. This prolonged exposure to 4-hydroxyisoleucine was well tolerated in control animals and did not alter levels of glucose or liver damage markers significantly. In diabetic rats, treatment with 4-hydroxyisoleucine did not affect glucose or liver damage markers, but did improve HDL-cholesterol levels (31% increase, p < 0.05). These findings indicate 4-hydroxyisoleucine as a useful and well-tolerated treatment for insulin resistance, both directly as a hypoglycaemic and also as a protective agent for the liver.- PMID: 18680121 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE

Hypocholesterolaemic activity has been reported for fenugreek in rats(9, G41) and alloxan-diabetic dogs.(10) Activity has been attributed to the fibre and saponin fractions, and not to lipid or amino acid fractions.(9, 10) Studies have reported a reduction in cholesterol but not triglyceride concentrations,(9) or in both
cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations, but without significant alterations in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL) concentrations.(10) Hypoglycaemic activity has been observed in rabbits, rats and dogs, and attributed to the defatted seed fraction (DSF),(8) trigonelline, nicotinic acid and coumarin.(7, 11) Oral administration of DSF reduced hyperglycaemia in four alloxan-diabetic dogs, and reduced the response to an oral glucose tolerance test in eight normal dogs, whereas the lipid fraction had no effect on serum glucose and insulin concentrations.(8) The high fibre content (50%) of DSF was thought to contribute to its antidiabetic effect although the initial rate of glucose absorption was not affected.(8) Nicotinic acid and coumarin were reported to be the major hypoglycaemic components of fenugreek seeds, following administration to normal and alloxan-diabetic rats.(7) The hypoglycaemic
action exhibited by coumarin was still significant 24 hours post administration.(7) In addition, a slight antidiuretic action was noted for coumarin.(7) Trigonelline inhibited cortisone-induced hyperglycaemia in rabbits if administered (250 mg/kg) concomitantly or two hours before, but not two hours after, cortisone.(11) In addition, trigonelline exhibited significant hypoglycaemic activity in alloxan-diabetic rats (50 mg/kg), lasting 24 hours.(11) A stimulant action on the isolated uterus (guinea-pig),especially during late pregnancy, has been noted for both aqueous and alcoholic extracts.(G41) An aqueous extract is stated to increase the number of heart beats in the isolated mammalian heart.(G41) In vitro antiviral activity against vaccinia virus has been reported for fenugreekine, which also possesses cardiotonic, hypoglycaemic, diuretic, antiphlogistic and antihypertensive properties.(2)

The best-documented medical use of fenugreek is to control blood sugar in both insulin-dependent (type 1) and noninsulin-dependent (type 2) diabetics. Some studies also show that serum cholesterol levels in diabetics, and perhaps in others, are reduced by fenugreek. Doses as low as 15 mg per day may produce beneficial effects on fasting blood sugar, elevation of blood sugar after a meal, and overall glycemic control. The use of fenugreek is likely to alter the diabetic patient’s need for insulin or other medications used to control blood sugar. This treatment should be supervised by a health care provider familiar with the use of herbal therapies for diabetes. The recommended
doses of fenugreek can vary rather widely.- Historically, fenugreek has been used as a topical treatment for abscesses, boils, burns, eczema, gout, and ulceration of the skin as it has an anti-inflammatory effect. It is also reputedly useful for a number of digestive complaints, including gastritis and gastric ulcers. A study published in 2002 found that both an aqueous solution and a gel fraction derived from fenugreek have anti-ulcer effects comparable to those of omeprazole, a standard medication given to reduce gastric secretions. The researchers found that the fenugreek solution protected the gastric mucosa from injury as well as reducing the secretion of gastric acid. Fenugreek reportedly can be helpful in the induction of childbirth, as it is known to stimulate uterine contractions. For this reason it should not be taken during pregnancy. As a gargle, fenugreek may relieve sore throats and coughing. Arthritis, bronchitis, fevers, and male reproductive conditions are other traditional but unsubstantiated indications for this herb.

Ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) is widely used in Asian countries as a traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases. It is known to have anti-inflammatory effects, although the mechanism is not clear. In this study, preventive effects of fermented ginseng (FG) against streptozotocin (STZ)-induced pancreatic beta-cell death was assessed in RINm5F insulinoma cells. FG markedly inhibited the production of nitrite in a dose-dependent manner. The decrease in nitrite production was found to correlate with reduced inducible nitric oxide (iNOS) protein and mRNA levels. To characterize the anti-inflammatory mechanism of FG at the transcriptional level, we examined effects of FG on the activity of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB). FG reduced a translocation of the NF-kappaB subunit and NF-kappaB-dependent transcriptional activity. FG blocked signaling upstream of NF-kappaB activation, such as degradation of inhibitor factor-kappaBalpha (IkappaBalpha ) and phosphorylations of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK). These results suggest that FG protects against STZ-induced pancreatic beta-cell damage by downregulation of iNOS, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha ) gene expressions by blocking NF-kappaB and mitogen-activated protein kinase activities.-=-PMID: 19956901 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE

WHAT MAKES PRODUCE "ORGANIC"?
Contrary to what most people believe, "organic" does not automatically mean "pesticide-free" or "chemical-free". In fact, under the laws of most states, organic farmers are allowed to use a wide variety of chemical sprays and powders on their crops. So what does organic mean? It means that these pesticides, if used, must be derived from natural sources, not synthetically manufactured. Also, these pesticides must be applied using equipment that has not been used to apply any synthetic materials for the past three years, and the land being planted cannot have been treated with synthetic materials for that period either.
Most organic farmers (and even some conventional farmers, too) employ mechanical and cultural tools to help control pests. These include insect traps, careful crop selection (there are a growing number of disease-resistant varieties), and biological controls (such as predator insects and beneficial microorganisms).
ORGANIC PRODUCE AND PERSONAL HEALTH
When you test synthetic chemicals for their ability to cause cancer, you find that about half of them are carcinogenic.
Until recently, nobody bothered to look at natural chemicals (such as organic pesticides), because it was assumed that they posed little risk. But when the studies were done, the results were somewhat shocking: you find that about half of the natural chemicals studied are carcinogenic as well. -This is a case where everyone (consumers, farmers, researchers) made the same, dangerous mistake. We assumed that "natural" chemicals were automatically better and safer than synthetic materials, and we were wrong. It's important that we be more prudent in our acceptance of "natural" as being innocuous and harmless.
ORGANIC PESTICIDES VERSUS SYNTHETIC PESTICIDES
3Clearly, the less we impact our environment, the better off we all are. Organic farming practices have greatly advanced the use of non-chemical means to control pests, as mentioned earlier. Unfortunately, these non-chemical methods do not always provide enough protection, and it's necessary to use chemical pesticides. How do organic pesticides compare with conventional pesticides? A recent study compared the effectiveness of a rotenone-pyrethrin mixture versus a synthetic pesticide, imidan. Rotenone and pyrethrin are two common organic pesticides; imidan is considered a "soft" synthetic pesticide (i.e., designed to have a brief lifetime after application, and other traits that minimize unwanted effects). It was found that up to 7 applications of the rotenone- pyrethrin mixture were required to obtain the level of protection provided by 2 applications of imidan. It seems unlikely that 7 applications of rotenone and pyrethrin are really better for the environment than 2 applications of imidan, especially when rotenone is extremely toxic to fish and other aquatic life. It should be noted, however, that we don't know for certain which system is more harmful. This is because we do not look at organic pesticides the same way that we look at conventional pesticides. We don't know how long these organic pesticides persist in the environment, or the full extent of their effects. When you look at lists of pesticides allowed in organic agriculture, you find warnings such as, "Use with caution. The toxicological effects of [organic pesticide X] are largely unknown," or "Its persistence in the soil is unknown." Again, researchers haven't bothered to study the effects of organic pesticides because it is assumed that "natural" chemicals are automatically safe.
WHY HAVEN'T WE HEARD THIS BEFORE?
For obvious reasons, organic farmers have done little, if anything, to dispel the myth that "organic = chemical/pesticide-free". They would only stand to lose business by making such a disclosure.
Pesticide manufacturers have little concern in the matter. To them, "synthetic pesticides sold" and "organic pesticides sold" are both "pesticides sold".
As for conventional farmers, they are not really in a position to be critical. It would not be in their interest to draw attention to chemical and pesticide use.
WHAT DOES ALL OF THIS MEAN?
Unless you know your grower personally, there is no guarantee that your produce has been grown without pesticides or other chemicals. It's a point to consider, given the substantially higher cost of organic foods.
There are many choices and decisions that we, as consumers, are asked to make. Hopefully, this has provided some new information that you will find helpful.

Restricted diet’ linked to reduction in ADHD

“You gotta do what you gotta do,” an exhausted Cathy Keys told NutraIngredients-USA today after spending the best part of two months completely renovating her family-run online supplements business, NutriHerb.net, after receiving an FDA warning letter in December last year.
Keys, the firm’s owner and managing director, said all therapeutic claims that the company had happily been making since building the website in 2001 – and for seven years before that via labelling and print – had been removed, an action she feared could put a severe dent in its profitability. ---
“Not being able to make claims could well run us out of business,” she said. "We were surprised to receive this letter as we did not know the claims were illegal but took steps immediately to comply."
The FDA warning letter, sent December 2 and which can be found Below , highlighted unauthorized drug claims for three products – Custom Advantage Chamomile; Custom Advantage CoQ10 and Custom Advantage Omega-3 Fatty Acids – and gave NutriHerb 15 days to take corrective action.
“We rang them and after discussing it decided to remove all therapeutic claims from our site,” Keys said. “Because there was so much to do they gave us a 60-day extension and we have just written to them to notify them that the work has been completed.” --Keys said she had scanned the FDA-approved list of qualified and unqualified health claims, but said the process was so elongated and expensive that NutriHerb would not be pursuing it. --The firm does also have the option to make structure/function claims provided they can substantiate them. ---“Being a small family business, we have a small marketing budget, so I have no idea how we are going to market our products now,” she said. ---Another warning letter dated December 21 sent to another Florida-based company regarding unauthorized drug claims for a range of sea algae derived calcium-osteoarthritis supplement products had not as yet been heeded. --Natural Option USA Corporation continues to market OsteOrganiCAL with testimonials and references to studies the FDA has deemed amount to drug claims on its website. --However the company said it was, "in the process of removing the claims". --That letter can be found here.

WARNING LETTER--FLA-11-11--December
21, 2010
Claudia Muharram, President/Director
Natural Option USA Corporation
4957 SW 74th Court
Miami, FL 33155
Dear Ms. Muharram:
This is to advise you that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
reviewed your website at the Internet address
http://www.natural-option.com/ in
December 2010 and has determined that the product OsteOrganicCAL (a
sea algae calcium compound packaged with Vitamin D3)
is promoted for conditions that cause the product to be a drug under section
201(g)(1) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act) [21
U.S.C. § 321(g)(1)]. The therapeutic claims on your website establish that the
product is a drug because it is intended for use in the cure, mitigation,
treatment, or prevention of disease. The marketing of this product with these
claims violates the Act.
Examples of some of the claims observed on your web site include:
đClaims in the form of personal testimonials on the OsteOrganiCAL webpage:
• "My clinical results in reversing osteopenia and osteoporosis have been better than those obtained using Fosamax."
• "[My bone density test showed considerable improvement. My first bone density test indicated I was at risk for traumatic fracture. After I began the OsteOrganiCAL program, my follow-up test showed considerable improvement."
•
"April of 1995, I had a bone scan. The result: I was diagnosed with severe
osteoporosis. In May I found out about a product called OsteOrganiCAL, I took
OsteOrganiCAL for three months, went and had another bone scan. My overall bone
density was increased 3.9%. I have never felt better."
• "[I] had a hard fall, my hip was black and purple. My chiropractor said she had never seen any bruise that bad, without a broken hip. I am sure it was the Natural Option product [OsteOrganiCAL] that saved me from a break. Thank you so much for stronger bones."
• "[Seven months my wife has been on OsteOrganiCAL. During this time she has not fractured any bones."
Claims made under the heading "OsteOrganiCAL® CASE STUDY ANALYSIS":
• "The fall of 2003 the Osteoporosis Education Project completed a year long pilot study with the sea algae calcium and vitamin D product known as "OsteOrganiCAL®". The study included eleven postmenopausal women, six of whom experienced impressive gains in bone mineral density from use of the product."
• "[A]nalysis of these cases documents the potential of this novel Calcium and Vitamin D product [OsteOrganiCAL] to halt and reverse the osteoporosis process in postmenopausal women."
• "Using OsteOrganiCAL however, the few women in the sample with only moderate bone loss (osteopenia) also benefited significantly from this therapy."
Your product is not generally recognized as safe and effective for the above referenced uses and, therefore, the product is a "new drug" under section 201[U1](p) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 321(p)]. New drugs may not be legally marketed in the U.S. without prior approval from FDA as described in section[U2] 505(a) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 355(a)]. FDA approves a new drug on the basis of scientific data submitted by a drug sponsor to demonstrate that the drug is safe and effective. Furthermore, your product OsteOrganiCAL is misbranded within the meaning of section 502(f)(1) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 352(f)(1)] because the labeling for this drug fails to bear adequate directions for use.
This letter is not intended to be an all-inclusive review of your website and the products your firm markets. It is your responsibility to ensure that all products marketed by your firm comply with the Act and its implementing regulations. We advise you to review your website, product labels, and other labeling and promotional materials for your products to ensure that the claims you make for your products do not cause them to violate the Act. You should take prompt action to correct the violations described above and prevent their future recurrence. Failure to do so may result in enforcement action without further notice. The Act authorizes the seizure of illegal products and injunctions against manufacturers and distributors of those products [21 U.S.C. §§ 332 and 334].
Please notify this office, in writing, within fifteen (15) working days from your receipt of this letter as to the specific steps you have taken to correct the violations noted above and to ensure that similar violations do not recur. Your response should include any documentation necessary to show that correction has been achieved. Monsanto and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have completed a biotechnology consultation process for a key component of the company’s high-oleic soybeans, the biotech giant has said.
The company said completion of the consultation process is a significant first step toward commercialization of Monsanto’s Vistive Gold soybeans[U3], which are low in trans and saturated fats, enabling food manufacturers to improve the health profile of foods made with soybean oil.[U4] The crop represents one of the first to be developed through a combination of biotechnology and traditional breeding methods to provide health benefits for consumers. --Monsanto’s global technology lead for food quality traits Joe Cornelius said that the product has been developed with input from the food and nutrition industry. The soybeans have 60 percent less saturated fat than conventional soybean oil, and 70 percent less saturated fat than fry shortening, the company said. --“Vistive Gold soybeans will give farmers an opportunity to produce nutritionally improved soybean oil for food companies and consumers,” Cornelius said. “Monsanto is continuing to provide innovations to the soybean oil market and help growers create additional value within the food supply chain.” --The Vistive Gold soybeans will be combined with the company’s Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans, to increase yield for farmers, as well as providing nutritionally improved oil.
Trans fat substitution
There is a large body of evidence suggesting that trans fatty acids raise levels of LDL-cholesterol (so-called ‘bad’ cholesterol) and reduce levels of HDL-cholesterol (or ‘good’ cholesterol, and can influence other risk factors for cardiovascular disease. This has led to trans fat bans in many parts of the United States.
In the food industry this has been mirrored by an increase the in pressure on manufacturers to eliminate trans fat from their products. But food manufacturers have faced a number of technical difficulties in removing trans fat from their products, and some have expressed concern that trans fats could end up being replaced by saturated fats, which are nearly as unhealthy as the fats they replace, prompting companies to look for healthier replacements. [U5]
Trans fats formed by partial hydrogenation of vegetable oil are attractive to the food industry due to their extended shelf life, flavor and heat stability, and have displaced natural solid fats and liquid oils in many areas of food processing.
“Food companies [U6]continue to look for ways to eliminate trans fats and reduce saturated fat, and Vistive Gold soybean oil is an excellent option that is more economical, sustainable and nutritionally desirable than current solutions,” Cornelius said.
Monsanto’s Vistive Gold soybeans are subject to a number of further regulatory hurdles with both the FDA and the US Department of Agriculture before they can be fully commercialized.

A restrictive diet, which bans processed foods, may reduce the symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in young children, according to a new study.
New research published in The Lancet, suggests that a diet restricted to just a few basic ingredients could be “a valuable instrument to assess whether ADHD is induced by food.” In the new study, children with ADHD were put on a ‘restricted elimination diet’ – containing only rice, meat, vegetables, pears and water – for five weeks. The authors found that ADHD symptoms were reduced in 78 per cent of children placed on the diet. ---“A strictly supervised restricted elimination diet is a valuable instrument to assess whether ADHD is induced by food,” wrote the researchers, led by senior author Professor Jan Buitelaar from Radboud University, The Netherlands. --“We think that dietary intervention should be considered in all children with ADHD, provided parents are willing to follow a diagnostic restricted elimination diet for a five-week period, and provided expert supervision is available,” they said. -However, writing in an accompanying comment piece for The Lancet, Dr Jaswinder Ghuman from the University of Arizona said that in her opinion[U7], the diet should not be continued for more than five weeks, “because long-term effects of dietary elimination on the child's nutritional status are not known.”
ADHD development
The authors said that several genetic and environmental factors are involved in the development of ADHD[U8]. One of the many environmental factors proposed to have an effect on ADHD development is diet. --According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), parents have long suspected that sugary foods, additives, and colours, may play a role in inducing symptoms, however there is very little evidence to support such theories. --Prof. Buitelaar and colleagues noted that some children have negative physical reactions to certain foods, and suggested that foods may also affect the brain in ways that result in changes in behaviour. --They explained that ADHD may be triggered by a hypersensitivity reaction to certain foods, adding that some complementary medicine practices test for the antibody IgG (immunoglobulin G) and recommend eliminating foods high in IgG for ADHD. However, they noted that IgG testing is unproven to work, and remains controversial among mainstream physicians.
Study details
The new research investigated the link between ADHD and diet by recruiting 100 children diagnosed with ADHD (between the ages of 4 and 8), and putting them on a restricted food (hypoallergenic) diet. After this a ‘food challenge’ was given to the children to test whether foods high in IgG re-triggered ADHD symptoms. Of the children to complete the restrictive diet phase of the trial, 78 percent had reduced ADHD symptoms, compared with no improvement in the controls.
After five weeks, children on the restricted diet received food challenge diets, in which certain foods (either high or log in IgG) were re-introduced into the diet. Buitelaar and co workers reported “a substantial relapse in behaviour in 63 per cent of children” when previously restricted processed foods were put back in the diet. However they said that no differences in relapse or behavioural effects were seen between high- and low- IgG foods. --Commenting on the study Dr Ghuman said: “IgG levels against foods did not predict which foods might lead to a negative effect on behaviour because an equal number of low and high IgG food challenges resulted in relapse of ADHD symptoms.”
Unanswered questions
Ghuman warned that the new study does not answer a number of questions, such as whether or not the elimination diet reduces symptoms long-term, and said that clinical practice should not be changed based on the results of one study. ( C-Y-A )~~~~ Means Cover your @$$~~~The authors also noted that the study had potential limitations, due to the fact that it was open-label.
“Expectations of the parents cannot be fully ruled out as a possible cause of the behavioural improvements … We [also] cannot rule out that the behavioural improvements during the first phase might have been caused by increased attention for the child in the diet group,” they said.

[U1]This can be challenged the FDA is off way off here but this person here does not know her rights under the DSHEA act which is still applicable under grandfather clauses--they cannot legally make the statements they have made and what they have said is ILLEGAL--BUTTTT because she is an independent and has no oney to back her--she has to cave in---and this is why a network is so important---the legalities or rather I should say the ILLEGALITIES of this is going to be more and more of a target to those who cannot afford to take legal action--this women will be done --an another access will be removed for peoples health --they are goingto go after the independents so then you will be directed to a drug store or drug company for your supplements which will be filled with unwanted contaminats and mimimal potency if any!!
[U2]WHO says this is a Drug—SO now are we going to remove oranges and Cherries from the diet and apples and limes and papaya and pineapple because they can do what drugs do not---see the Difference between a Vitamin and a food as Opposed to drugs Drugs Do not heal and No Drug can make this claim butttt Foods do and the claim that can be made is that with right nutrition you have health so there is no comparison with this supplement and the drug definition!!
[U3]WOW I can't wait New Poison YUM YUM--Bad enough soy causes cancer ---now we are taking the cholesterol out of it---the very thing that protects us against cancer---with out the cholesterol this fat oxidizes at a super fast rate causing cellular decay and carcinogen breeding ground---Good Bye Long Life in the Future---it is going to be more then anything sustained life and then termination when they have gotten or have profited all that they can
[U4]Increase the efficacy in breaking down a human being this is industrial oil again should not be consumed
[U5]WHAT A CROCK OF %$#@---the food industry was manuevored into this position giving a reason to sell theis GMO product--saturated fats are the safest fats in the planet---GLOBALLY it is the fat of choice---Only in areas where Monsanto has a stronghold is this not the case---Total deception and Marketing
[U6]MORE LIKE GE or GMO producers of toxic foods--it would appear that this is a battle that will never cease--the earth's existence as well as ours will depend on this--
[U7]The article is good up to here---"in her opinion"--opinions are like backsides--everyone has one--what is so incredible here is that you see a reduction up to 78%---"78%" that is huge and if then there was a observation diet ( lets give everything a title shall wee--then we can sound medically stupid as well ) then by observing the intake we can best determine the foods that are causing this issue and not get a kid on drugs because it is convienent---then the food can be traced right to where it is produced and then can be examined to see what is being done to the food--Genteically---Chemically--or even- Processed
[U8]NOWWWWW PAY ATTENTION HERE!!!!!!!""""Environmental and Genetic Factors"""""what environment and what genetics---see the obvious is presented foreign or damaged Genetics and environments---toxic chemicals from the production of foods from seed to harvest--we would all think in terms our living environments--factories--exhaust from cars--toxic waste in the rivers--prescription drug and plastics exposure -and this will have a role---but the real factor that is obviously overlooked is the genetics that is being introduced to the foods andd the genetic impact that it is having on the human genome--when the genetics are being introduced this will target everyone differnt due to the genetic matrix of each individual " Perfect Race" would appear to be on this agenda--if you cannot utilize this waste then you are not the human genome they want to be alive--Something to consider

Dear Secretary Vilsack:
A team of senior plant and animal scientists have recently brought to my attention the discovery of an electron microscopic pathogen that appears to significantly impact the health of plants, animals, and probably human beings. Based on a review of the data, it is widespread, very serious, and is in much higher concentrations in Roundup Ready (RR) soybeans and corn - suggesting a link with the RR gene or more likely the presence of Roundup. This organism appears NEW to science!- This is highly sensitive information that could result in a collapse of US soy and corn export markets and significant disruption of domestic food and feed supplies. On the other hand, this new organism may already be responsible for significant harm (see below). My colleagues and I are therefore moving our investigation forward with speed and discretion, and seek assistance from the USDA and other entities to identify the pathogen's source, prevalence, implications, and remedies.
We are informing the USDA of our findings at this early stage, specifically due to your pending decision regarding approval of RR alfalfa. Naturally, if either the RR gene or Roundup itself is a promoter or co-factor of this pathogen, then such approval could be a calamity. Based on the current evidence, the only reasonable action at this time would be to delay deregulation at least until sufficient data has exonerated the RR system, if it does.
For the past 40 years, I have been a scientist in the professional and military agencies that evaluate and prepare for natural and manmade biological threats, including germ warfare and disease outbreaks. Based on this experience, I believe the threat we are facing from this pathogen is unique and of a high risk status. In layman's terms, it should be treated as an emergency.
A diverse set of researchers working on this
problem have contributed various pieces of the puzzle, which together presents
the following disturbing scenario:
Unique Physical Properties
This previously unknown organism is
only visible under an electron microscope (36,000X), with an approximate size
range equal to a medium size virus. It is able to
reproduce and appears to be a micro-fungal-like organism. If so, it
would be the first such micro-fungus ever identified. There is strong evidence
that this infectious agent promotes diseases of
both plants and mammals, which is very rare.
Pathogen Location and Concentration
It is found in high concentrations in Roundup Ready
soybean meal and corn, distillers meal, fermentation feed products, pig stomach
contents, and pig and cattle placentas.
Linked with Outbreaks of Plant Disease
The organism is prolific in plants infected with
two pervasive diseases that are driving down yields and farmer income - sudden
death syndrome (SDS) in soy, and Goss' wilt in corn. The pathogen is also found
in the fungal causative agent of SDS (Fusarium solani fsp glycines).
Implicated in Animal Reproductive Failure
Laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of
this organism in a wide variety of livestock that have experienced spontaneous
abortions and infertility. Preliminary results from ongoing
research have also been able to reproduce abortions in a clinical setting.--The
pathogen may explain the escalating frequency of infertility and spontaneous
abortions over the past few years in US cattle, dairy, swine, and horse
operations. These include recent reports of infertility rates in dairy heifers
of over 20%, and spontaneous abortions in cattle as high as 45%- For
example, 450 of 1,000 pregnant heifers fed wheatlege experienced spontaneous
abortions. Over the same period, another 1,000 heifers from the same herd that
were raised on hay had no abortions. High concentrations of the pathogen were
confirmed on the wheatlege, which likely had been under weed management using
glyphosate.
Recommendations
In summary, because of the high titer of this new animal pathogen in Roundup
Ready crops, and its association with plant and animal diseases that are
reaching epidemic proportions, we request USDA's participation in a multi-agency
investigation, and an immediate moratorium on
the deregulation of RR crops until the causal/predisposing relationship with
glyphosate and/or RR plants can be ruled out as a threat to crop and animal
production and human health.
It is urgent to examine whether the side-effects of glyphosate use may have facilitated the growth of this pathogen, or allowed it to cause greater harm to weakened plant and animal hosts. It is well-documented that glyphosate promotes soil pathogens and is already implicated with the increase of more than 40 plant diseases; it dismantles plant defenses by chelating vital nutrients; and it reduces the bioavailability of nutrients in feed, which in turn can cause animal disorders. To properly evaluate these factors, we request access to the relevant USDA data.
I have studied plant pathogens for more than 50
years. We are now seeing an unprecedented trend of
increasing plant and animal diseases and disorders. This pathogen
may be instrumental to understanding and solving this problem. It deserves
immediate attention with significant resources to avoid a general collapse of
our critical agricultural infrastructure.
Sincerely,
COL (Ret.) Don M. Huber

Asthma Tied to Bacterial Communities in the Airway
ScienceDaily (Feb. 19, 2011) — Asthma may have a surprising relationship with the composition of the species of bacteria that inhabit bronchial airways, a finding that could suggest new treatment or even potential cures for the common inflammatory disease, according to a new UCSF-led study.
Using new detection methods, researchers learned that the diversity of microbes inside the respiratory tract is far vaster than previously suspected -- creating a complex and inter-connected microbial neighborhood that appears to be associated with asthma, and akin to what has also been found in inflammatory bowel disease, vaginitis, periodontitis, and possibly even obesity.[U1]---Contrary to popular belief, the scientists also learned that the airways are not necessarily entirely sterile environments, even in healthy people, while the airways of asthmatics are infected by a richer, more complex collection of bacteria. These findings could improve understanding of the biology of asthma, and potentially lead to new and much-needed therapies.-"People thought that asthma was caused by inhalation of allergens but this study shows that it may be more complicated than that -- asthma may involve colonization of the airways by multiple bacteria,'' said study co-author Homer Boushey, MD, a UCSF professor of medicine in the division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.--The study is published online in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.--Asthma is one of the most common diseases in the world, with approximately 300 million asthmatics globally, including 24 million in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The disease has been on the rise for the last 60 years.--"It has gone from 3 percent of the population to slightly more than 8 percent of the population in the U.S.,'' said Boushey. "It is most prevalent in western, developed nations -- and we don't know why.''[U2]---In recent years, scientists began studying communities of mixed-species microorganisms (microbiome) found in both diseased and healthy people to better understand their role in a variety of diseases. But research on the microbiome in respiratory disease is relatively uncharted terrain.--"We know fairly little about the diversity, complexity and collective function of bacteria living in the respiratory tract, and how they might contribute to diseases like asthma,'' said Yvonne J. Huang, MD, the paper's first author. She is a research fellow and clinical instructor in the UCSF Pulmonary Division.--"Traditionally, the airways have been thought to be sterile. However, this study suggests this is not the case. Certain asthma patients who require inhaled corticosteroid therapy possess a great abundance of bacteria compared to healthy individuals, and have an increased relative abundance of specific organisms that is correlated with greater sensitivity of their airways.''In their three-year pilot project, the scientists collected samples from the airway linings of 65 adults with mild to moderate asthma and 10 healthy subjects. Then, using a tool that can identify approximately 8,500 distinct groups of bacteria in a single assay, the scientists profiled the organisms present in each sample to look for relationships between bacterial community composition and clinical characteristics of the patients' asthma.--The researchers found that bronchial airway samples from asthmatic patients contained far more bacteria than samples from healthy patients. The scientists also found greater bacterial diversity in the asthmatic patients who had the most hyper-responsive or sensitive airways (a feature of asthma).--"People have viewed asthma as a misdirected immune reaction to environmental exposures, but few have thought of it in the context of airway microbiota composition,'' said senior author Susan Lynch, PhD, an assistant professor of medicine and director of the UCSF Colitis and Crohn's Disease Microbiome Research Core in the division of gastroenterology.---"We took an ecological approach, considering the bacteria in the context of their microbial neighborhoods to identify relationships between characteristics of these communities and features of the disease…This new approach will help us to better understand the microbiota-host relationships that define human health.''--The authors say that further studies are needed to determine how these specific bacteria identified in the study may influence the cause and development of asthma.

Bacteria to Blame in Asthma Attacks in Children, Research Suggests
ScienceDaily (Oct. 7, 2010) — Doctors have long known that viral infections can bring about asthma attacks and the shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing associated with them. But while viral infections cannot be treated, scientists at the Danish Paediatric Asthma Centre (DPAC) at the University of Copenhagen and Gentofte Hospital have discovered that treatable bacterial infections can also cause asthma attacks. The discovery could revolutionize treatment.---"We found a significant relationship between bacterial infections and acute asthma attacks -- above and beyond the expected relationship between viral infections and attacks," says Hans Bisgaard, a professor of pediatrics at the DPAC.--The study examined 361 children between the ages of four weeks and three years to determine the presence of viral and bacterial infections during severe asthma attacks. The results conclude that the number of attacks was just as high in children with bacterial respiratory infections as in those with viral infections.—
Using antibiotics to treat asthma attacks?--"This indicates that bacteria can exacerbate asthma symptoms even if they aren't infected with a virus," Professor Bisgaard says. "The findings open up an entirely new method for treating severe asthma attacks. We can't treat viral infections, but scientists will now look into whether treatment with antibiotics can help children when they have an asthma attack if they are also suffering from a bacterial infection."--"Being able to use antibiotics to treat asthma attacks in children would be revolutionary," Professor Bisgaard says.--The effects of antibiotics in treating asthma attacks will now be examined in large-scale, clinical study by the DPAC. The research has been published in British Medical Journal on 4 October 2010.

Blocking Effects Of Viral Infections May Prevent Asthma In Young Children
ScienceDaily (Nov. 9, 2007) — Babies who get severe respiratory viral infections are much more likely to suffer from asthma as they get older. Now researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have pinpointed a key step in the development of asthma in mice after a severe respiratory infection. They suggest that medications designed to interfere with this mechanism could potentially prevent many cases of childhood asthma. --"A severe respiratory infection in infancy greatly increases the risk of developing asthma," says the study's lead author Mitchell Grayson, M.D., assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Allergy and Immunology. "Less than one in 30 people who don't suffer a severe respiratory infection as a baby develop asthma, but of those who do get these infections, one in five goes on to have asthma." Grayson and colleagues recently published their research in the Journal of Experimental Medicine. They found that mice that developed asthma-like symptoms after a severe respiratory viral infection had an unusual immune reaction. During the infection, the mice produced antibodies and immune signals similar to those produced during an allergic response, instead of those typically made in response to infection. That started a chain reaction that led to asthma. The researchers propose that a similar reaction occurs in some people who suffer severe respiratory viral infections. --"We think genetically predisposed [U3]individuals will tend to have this kind of immune reaction to a severe respiratory viral infection," Grayson says. "In those people an allergic-type response could be part of their antiviral immune response. That sets them up to make antibodies against a lot of environmental substances, like pet dander or pollen, and they can go on to develop allergies or asthma." --Reports by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that the number of people with asthma in the United States rose from approximately 7 million in 1980 to about 20 million in 2003. The reasons for this trend are unclear, Grayson indicates. But he suggests that a growing population density and the resulting increase in transmission of respiratory viral infections might be a cause. ---Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common source of respiratory infections. In the United States nearly all children have been infected with RSV by two or three years of age. Severe RSV infections, typified by persistent coughing, wheezing and gasping for breath, send many thousands of children to the hospital each year. --To investigate the connection between severe respiratory viral infections and subsequent asthma, the researchers used mice genetically selected to have an asthma susceptibility and infected them with a virus similar to RSV. They found that severe respiratory infections in the mice induced an allergic-type immune response and ultimately caused long-term changes in the airways of the lungs that are hallmarks of chronic asthma. ---The researchers discovered that certain immune cells in the mouse lungs reacted to severe viral infections by releasing compounds that instigated an inflammatory response. That in turn induced many lung airway cells to transform into mucus-producing cells, which can cause the obstruction of lung passages and shortness of breath characteristic of asthma. ---The researchers found that interfering with this process by altering the immune cells or removing the inflammatory compounds they secreted prevented overgrowth of mucus-producing cells. --The findings promise a new approach to asthma prevention, according to Grayson. "This offers a different way of thinking about what happens in the development of asthma," Grayson says. "It may be possible to prevent many cases of asthma and other chronic inflammatory airway diseases by stopping allergic-type antibody production after a severe viral infection in infants."

Monsanto's Technology Stewardship Agreement shifts responsibility to growers
for any and all losses, injury or damages resulting from the use of Monsanto seeds. There is no expiration date on the contract. The grower may terminate the contract, but: "Grower's responsibilities and the other terms herein shall survive..."
This includes contamination of other farms. Growers are purchasing seed for Spring planting right now. Alfalfa, America's 4th largest crop, is a particular problem because it is a perennial plant and the seeds may lie dormant in the ground for 10-20 years, and WILL contaminate non-GM plants. Contaminated alfalfa cannot be recalled from the environment. The liability burden can follow the grower for decades. Farmers must be made aware of the danger of being sued before they plant GM crops (especially alfalfa because it is used for cattle feed and will affect dairy farmers).
Currently, Australian organic farmer Steve Marsh, who lost his organic certification due to contamination, is suing his GM crop-growing neighbor for the GM contamination.
Contamination of processing equipment is another risk.
There is evidence from India that GM crops are linked to livestock deaths. The Monsanto Technology Stewardship Agreement contract holds growers responsible for injuries, so this is another potential consequence for farmers planting Monsanto GM crops to consider.
The Monsanto Technology Stewardship Agreement has
another clause that farmers will find disturbing:
it appears that the growers agree that in order to sell their farm, the new
purchaser must also sign a Monsanto Technology Stewardship Agreement.
According to a top real estate broker, the contract places a covenant,
condition or restriction (CCR)
on the farmer's land:
"GROWER AGREES: To accept and continue the obligations of this Monsanto Technology/Stewardship Agreement on any new land purchased or leased by Grower that has Seed planted on it by a previous owner or possessor of the land; and to notify in writing purchasers or lessees of land owned by Grower that has Seed planted on it that the Monsanto Technology is subject to this Monsanto Technology/Stewardship Agreement and they must have or obtain their own Monsanto Technology/Stewardship Agreement."
Environmental attorney Anthony Patchett further elaborated on Monsanto's contract in a letter that states "Monsanto's agreement shifts all liability to the growers, including contamination issues or any potential future liability. All the grower receives is the price of the seed." He further stated that this contract appears to be "Unconscionable". Click here to view the letter.
For more information about the perils of contamination, please go to MorphCity.com to read the interview with alfalfa seed grower Phil Geertson who opposed Monsanto in the GM case heard in the Supreme Court last summer. Geertson said that Monsanto's GM seeds are more expensive and after a few years, weeds can become tolerant to Roundup Ready and other glyphosate herbicides so farmers must return to conventional farming practices anyway. Therefore, there is no benefit to planting GM crops.
You can alert farmers to the hazard of growing GM crops and how growers can be hurt by Monsanto's contract, if you would like to take action in opposing GM crops. Please share this article and video.

ScienceDaily (Nov. 10, 2009) — Dana Filoti of the University of New Hampshire is presenting thin films of silver and copper she has developed that can kill bacteria and may one day help to cut down on hospital infections. The antimicrobial properties of silver and copper have been known for centuries -- last year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officially registered copper alloys, allowing them to be marketed with the label "kills 99.9% of bacteria within two hours." Copper ions are known to penetrate bacteria and disrupt molecular pathways important for their survival.--Using zeolite ceramic structures, Filoti is testing the hypothesis that the combination of silver and copper might work synergistically to better kill bacteria, work that she will present on November 12 at a meeting of the scientific society AVS in San Jose. "The hard ceramic structure looks like Swiss cheese and inside the holes there are ions of silver and copper," says Filoti.--By experimenting with the ratio of the two metals and the texture of the thin films, she has been able to reduce the amount of microbes present on the surface by 99 percent. One application of these antimicrobials, which Filoti is developing in partnership with a company in New Hampshire, is an antimicrobial face mask designed to protect against pathogens that cause many hospital-acquired infections.

řřAn Idea to try---
Make a green drink with parsley and dandelion—add Ľ dropper of colloidal silver with this---should see an impact The mix will not be as refined--- but you may still see results----again this is something to try Dandelion and Parsley are loaded with copper---and enter the blood stream very efficiently----colloids are extremely penetrating due to the way our system absorbs them---
[U1]LEAVE STARCHY foods --grains--pastas--rice--corn--polentas--cakes--pastries--bananas--grapes--watermelon-raisons--soy--soy derivatives--tvp-hvp-avp-hpp msg autolysed yeast---all Problematic
[U2]GMO and SOY might be the problem anddd the lack of nutrients in the soil
[U3]Genetically altered food would cause a predispposition to having asthma!!??? is this what they are saying!!!
