The upcoming AVMA vote- Will it affect cat owners' ability to feed raw pet food?

Cats fed a raw diet, like this one, tend to be healthier, more active, have silkier coats and possibly even live longer, provided the food is prepared correctly.--Raw pet food is becoming increasingly popular for many pet owners, and it’s thought that these pets are healthier overall than those fed commercial food, particularly dry food. But now, the American Veterinary Medical Association is getting ready to vote on a policy against raw feeding, which has people who use raw pet food and those who advocate for species-appropriate diets up in arms.---The commercial pet food industry has, for a long time, touted their food as the best type of food available for pets; they call it “balanced.” Cats, however, don’t naturally eat all the corn, rice, and other vegetable and grain products that make up commercial foods, and their digestive systems aren’t built like ours. They don’t process vegetable matter or grain very well and they don’t need the carbs for energy.---Another common product the pet food industry uses is animal by products, which can come from chicken, pork, fish and even beef. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) has determined that animal by products are acceptable for pet consumption, and defines by products as kidneys, spleens, bones, brains, livers, and other non-meat products,[U1]  so when you’re looking at the ingredient lists on bags of cat food, this is what they’re talking about when they say, “[meat] by product.” ---Meat meal is defined by the AAFCO as the rendered product from animal tissues, but doesn’t include things like blood, hooves, hair, fur or feathers, manure, hides, stomachs or intestines.[U2]  However, meat meal is not much better for cats than meat by products are. ---It’s because of all this that raw and natural feeding is getting so popular. According to Dr. Peter Dobias, a veterinarian experienced in both conventional and holistic veterinary medicine, the pet food industry is primarily responsible for educating veterinarians about pet nutrition, and is using people’s fear of bacteria and food-borne illnesses as a means of turning people back towards buying their food. He asserts that his patients who are fed raw or natural diets are far healthier than his patients who are fed commercial diets. He is one of those speaking out loudly against the AVMA’s proposed policy.--However, there does seem to be some misinformation regarding the proposed policy. Some seem to think that their freedom to feed their pets raw diets will be wholly taken away or, at the very least, restricted. The AVMA cannot enact law and as such, they can’t prevent people from feeding their pets raw food no matter what policies they set forth. So regardless of their policy, people who feed raw diets may continue to do so at their discretion. ---One major point of interest, however, is that this policy is based primarily on possibilities, specifically, the possibility of bacterial contamination that is present whenever any raw or undercooked meat is handled or eaten. Most people know, or are at least aware, of safe handling practices for all raw food, which helps to prevent the spread of food-borne illness. Their policy cites well-known possibilities of bacterial contamination, however, fails to mention anything concrete that shows that cats and dogs fed raw diets suffer from food-related illnesses more often than their commercially fed counterparts. It’s simply based on the “public health risks” associated with using raw meat.---Dr. Lisa Pierson, a veterinarian with a raw-food recipe for cats on her website, explains why a raw diet is not likely to make cats sick. Essentially, she explains that cats have a much shorter digestion time than humans do, giving bacteria very little time to set in. She also says that whole raw meat, when handled properly, likely has less bacteria in it than commercial dry foods. ---Further, she discusses why fully cooking meat can destroy nutrients that naturally occur in the meat, although she does recommend par-boiling or partial baking before grinding the meat. ---Basically, so long as you practice the same safe-handling procedures that you normally would when handling raw meat, such as washing your hands, dishes, and utensils thoroughly with soap and hot water, disposing of any unused or uneaten raw meat promptly, chill (refrigerate or freeze) the food as soon as you’re finished making it and serving it, and keep different foods and utensils separate, you should be okay. The USDA does also recommend cooking meat thoroughly before eating, however they’re talking about human consumption, not feline consumption.---In short, whatever the AVMA decides will probably not affect whether you can continue to feed your cat a raw diet. It will likely encourage many vets to try and discourage using raw pet food, but so long as your cats are healthy, even your vet will have little reason to tell you to change their diet back to commercially manufactured food.

Zyflamend suppresses growth and sensitizes human pancreatic tumors to gemcitabine in an orthotopic mouse model through modulation of multiple targets.

Authors: Kunnumakkara AB, Sung B, Ravindran J, Diagaradjane P, Deorukhkar A, Dey S, Koca C, Tong Z, Gelovani JG, Guha S, Krishnan S, Aggarwal BB

Abstract--Agents that can potentiate the efficacy of standard chemotherapy against pancreatic cancer are of great interest. Because of their low cost and safety, patients commonly use a variety of dietary supplements, although evidence of their efficacy is often lacking. One such commonly used food supplement is Zyflamend, a polyherbal preparation with potent anti-inflammatory activities and preclinical efficacy against prostate and oral cancer. Whether Zyflamend has any efficacy against human pancreatic cancer alone or in combination with gemcitibine, a commonly used agent, was examined in cell cultures and in an orthotopic mouse model. In vitro, Zyflamend inhibited the proliferation of pancreatic cancer cell lines regardless of p53 status and also enhanced gemcitabine-induced apoptosis. This finding correlated with inhibition of NF-κB activation by Zyflamend and suppression of cyclin D1, c-myc, COX-2, Bcl-2, IAP, survivin, VEGF, ICAM-1 and CXCR4. In nude mice, oral administration of Zyflamend alone significantly inhibited the growth of orthotopically transplanted human pancreatic tumors, and when combined with gemcitabine, further enhanced the antitumor effects. Immunohistochemical and Western blot analyses of tumor tissue showed that the suppression of pancreatic cancer growth correlated with inhibition of proliferation index marker (Ki-67), COX-2, MMP-9, NF-κB and VEGF. Overall, these results suggest that the concentrated multiherb product Zyflamend alone can inhibit the growth of human pancreatic tumors and, in addition, can sensitize pancreatic cancers to gemcitabine through the suppression of multiple targets linked to tumorigenesis.---PMID: 21935918 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Recipe Mender---if you cannot afford to buy this then make it---what you will need is rosemary-green tea-tumeric-ginger-nettle burdock-oregano( meditereanan)-black seed ---from here we will modify the formula a wee bit so as not to cause undue issues ---what you will do is add equal portions to a blender---1 tsp or 1 oz ( as an example ) you can modify this to your desire—add 3 parts alcohol to this regimen---and proceed to blend---and blend for 10 minutes---stop the blender—strain the extract---then take the extract-simmer it down to about half the volume---when it gets to half the volume the take 1-2 oz of either sunflower oil-olive oil—or sesame seed oil and again blend this in a blender for about 10 minutes----when done shut off blender and pour this in a dark glass container—

Use ¼ tsp several times a day---this will break down tumours and support liver-lung-brain-stomach-oesphagus-boost immune system and increase antioxidant  levels-will have anti bacterial and anti fungal and anti mold and anti viral properties as well—and then you can just call it Mender of the System

German National Academy of Sciences issues a critical statement on the use of bioenergy

Berlin, Germany (SPX) Aug 01, 2012

In a statement on the chances and limits of using bioenergy, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina has come to the conclusion that in quantitative terms, bioenergy plays a minor role in the transition to renewable, sustainable energy sources in Germany at the present time and probably in the future.---Bioenergy requires more surface area, is associated with higher greenhouse gas emissions and is more harmful to the environment than other renewable sources such as photovoltaic, solar thermal energy and wind energy.---In addition, energy crops potentially compete with food crops. The report recommends finding strategies for saving energy and increasing energy efficiency.---The Leopoldina's statement "Bioenergy - Chances and Limits" was compiled by a working group of more than 20 expert scientists established in 2010. The report provides recommendations for using bioenergy, defined as energy obtained from burning of non-fossil plant biomass or biofuels derived primarily from biomass.--The statement also outlines under which conditions the utilization of bioenergy is appropriate and what kind of technologies are currently available or are being developed to convert biomass into biofuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel.---In addition, it introduces various scientific approaches aimed at producing hydrogen from water in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.--The statement extends earlier Leopoldina reports on the topic of energy: "Konzept fur ein integriertes Energieforschungsprogramm fur Deutschland", 2009 ("Concept for an Integrated Energy Research Programme for Germany, 2009") and "Energy- and research-policy recommendations following the events in Fukushima", 2011

Investigation of optimum roasting conditions to obtain possible health benefit supplement, antioxidants from coffee beans.

J Diet Suppl. 2011 Sep;8(3):293-310

Authors: Sulaiman SF, Moon JK, Shibamoto T

Abstract--In order to investigate the role of roasting conditions in antioxidant formation, methanol and hot water extracts from Robusta coffee beans roasted for various lengths of time and at various temperatures were analyzed for total phenolic acid, chlorogenic acid, and caffeine content, as well as for their antioxidant activities using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl (DPPH), thiobarbituric acid (TBA), and malonaldehyde/gas chromatography (MA/GC) assays. The amount of total phenolics in methanol extracts decreased linearly over the roasting temperature from 63.51 ± 0.77 mg chlorogenic acid equivalent (CAE)/g coffee beans (roasted at 200°C) to 42.56 ± 0.33 mg CAE/g coffee beans (roasted at 240°C). The total chlorogenic acid content decreased when the roasting time was increased from 78.33 ± 1.41 mg/g (green coffee beans) to 4.31 ± 0.23 mg/g (roasted for 16 min at 250°C). All methanol extracts from roasted coffee beans possessed over 90% antioxidant activities in the DPPH assay. The antioxidant activity of methanol extracts ranged from 41.38 ± 1.77% (roasted at 250°C for 10 min) to 98.20 ± 1.49% (roasted at 230°C for 16 min) as tested by the TBA assay. The antioxidant activity of methanol extracts of green coffee beans and roasted coffee beans ranged from 93.01% (green coffee beans) to 98.62 ± 1.32% (roasted at 250°C for 14 min) in the MA/GC assays. All hot water extracts exhibited moderate pro-oxidant activities in TBA and MA/GC assays. The results indicated that roasting conditions of coffee beans play an important role in the formation of antioxidants in brewed coffee, which can be dietary supplements having beneficial effect to human health.--PMID: 22432728 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Perception, Behaviour, Thought & Vitamin B-3

Dr. Hoffer's ABC of Natural Nutrition for Children

In 1938, the American Journal of Medical Science (Vol. 196) published an article by T.D. Spies and colleagues titled "The mental symptoms of pellagra: their relief with nicotinic acid." This article describes 'subclinical pellagra' in children. The symptoms include hyperactivity, perceptual difficulties, inappropriate social behavior, and, understandably, problems with school. Today, children with these same symptoms are labeled "hyperactive," "ADD," "emotionally disturbed," "dyslexic," or "minimally brain damaged," depending upon the focus of the diagnostician. Pellagra affects perception, thought processes, mood, and behavior. It results from an inadequate amount of vitamin B-3, also known as niacin (nicotinic acid), or its amide (niacinamide).---In his new book Dr. Hoffer's ABC of Natural Nutrition for Children, Abram Hoffer, a pioneer in orthomolecular psychiatry, refers to Spies' article to show that the connection between pellagra, caused by niacin deficiency, and behavior abnormalities is not new information. Hoffer began using large doses of vitamins (particularly B3) and minerals to treat schizophrenics successfully in the 1950's. His interest in treating children began when he entered private practice in 1967, and saw how quickly the few children who were referred to him responded to "optimal," usually megadoses, of vitamin B-3. He has come to the conclusion that many of the children now being treated with Ritalin are actually suffering from what he calls, "vitamin B-3 dependent or subclinical. pellagra." Dr. Hoffer's ABC of Natural Nutrition for Children introduces the reader to orthomolecular medicine, explains current diagnostic protocols (his own and conventional medicine's), tells how to treat and prevent learning and behavior disorders, and gives a substantial number of case studies from Dr. Hoffer's personal research.---Depression, which can affect hyperactive and hypoactive children, and perceptual disturbances are often the first indications of pellagra. Like people with schizophrenia, affected children may hear voices. Foods may taste different to them. Letters appear upside down, and words slip around the page. Children may see objects or creatures among the shadows in the semi-dark. Usually, children are unable to describe these changes in their perceptions without help. Dr. Hoffer's ABC of Natural Nutrition for Children includes a hundred-question Perceptual Dysfunction Test that can be completed by young children with the help of a parent. The PD Test was adapted by Dr. Glen Green from the HofferOsmond Diagnostic Test (HOD), which Dr. Hoffer and Dr.--Humphrey Osmond developed in 1960, to screen for schizophrenia. The HOD test can be used to evaluate mental health in children over 10 years old although Hoffer says that some children may have difficulty with some of the vocabulary. The HOD test is available as a computer program and at www. softtac@islandnet.com.---In addition to these questionnaires, a urine test can identify krytopyrroluria (IKP), a substance commonly found in the urine of schizophrenic patients. This substance causes a deficiency of B-6 (pyridoxine) and zinc by latching onto these nutrients and removing them from the body via urine. Hoffer has noticed that children with positive KP results also respond to B-3. While all of these tests and questionnaires may point to vitamin deficiency, the primary test is to give the child large doses of niacinamide or B-3 (often starting with 1 G tid). If the child's perceptual and behavioral problems are caused by a deficiency, Hoffer says that improvement will be noticed within months (or sooner).----Sugar craving and food allergies are other factors that Hoffer considers when treating perceptual and behavioral problems. Too much sugar in the diet can indicate nutrient deficiencies. A zinc deficiency can, in fact, cause sugar craving[U3] . Poorly nourished children are also more likely to absorb toxic metals, which are known to cause aberrant behavior and learning problems. Identifying food allergies is vital. Hoffer refers to numerous researchers and clinicians whose work over the past 75 years has shown that "...any food allergy can reproduce almost every known psychiatric syndrome from infantile autism and schirophrenia to mood and behavioral disorders."[U4] ---"Perceptual, thought, and mood disorders make it very difficult for the child to grow and develop properly," writes Hoffer. "The difficulty of keeping up with their peers and with their parents' expectations for them creates so much stress on these children that they develop psychosocial techniques for dealing with the problem, for example, not going to school or running away." To Hoffer, these underlying disorders, which can be corrected with orthomolecular treatment, are like a hardware dysfunction in a computer. The psychosocial techniques that result as an adaptation to the biochemical problems are like computer software problems and must be corrected by "reprogramming ... by the application of behavioral or other forms of therapy." Behavioral therapies, however, will not resolve biochemical imbalances and vitamin deficiencies; nor, will drugs and tranquilizers. Until the orthomolecular or nutritional therapy causes improvement, however, Dr. Hoffer will prescribe drugs if needed. He prefers mellaril and imipramine to ritalin, which, he says, "has undesirable side effects ... such as interfering with growth due to loss of appetite and causing possible drug addiction."----The basis of Dr. Hoffer's treatment plan lies in a healthful diet, megavitamin therapy, and eliminating all refined sugars and junk processed foods. Vitamins B-3, B-6, and C and the mineral zinc are the nutrients most often required; but, Hoffer also uses optimal doses of other vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and amino acids. In this book he gives symptoms and signs of specific nutrient deficiencies as well as side effects from megadoses. Niacin/vitamin B-3, for example, can cause flushing, nausea, and jaundice, which disappears when the therapy is stopped. Hoffer tells about one child who turned yellow within days of starting B-3 therapy, "even though his liver function tests remained normal. On inositol niacinate he did not turn yellow over a five year period of observation."---Compliance is the major problem with this treatment. Sometimes parents cannot or will not follow through. Sometimes children refuse to cooperate. Getting children, many of whom are addicted to sugar, to delete refined sugar from their diet can be a challenge. When children refuse to avoid sugar, Hoffer gives them permission to eat as much sugar as they want on Saturday if they agree to avoid it during the week. The headaches, nausea, and vomiting that results from the Saturday binge often convinces a child to avoid the sugary cause.--While writing this review, I heard of yet another child, a 7th grader, who shot 4 schoolmates and did not know whom he had shot. or why he had fired the gun. Psychologists talk about healing abandonment and disassociation. Gun control and calls for prayer and morality in the schools are also offered as solutions. But this rise in violence may well be caused by a "hardware" problem - a biochemical dysfunction due to nutritional deficiency.---We are seeing a growing interest in the effect of emotion and thought on biochemistry, but the other side of the holistic equation - biochemistry's effect on behavior and emotions has received less attention. Dr. Hoffer's ABC ofNatural Nutrition for Children offers vital information concerning the prevention and healing of mental disturbances and violence, demonstrated by too many of today's children.

Modulation of antibiotic resistance in bacterial pathogens by oleanolic acid and ursolic acid.

Phytomedicine. 2012 Apr 15;19(6):515-9

Authors: Kurek A, Nadkowska P, Pliszka S, Wolska KI

Abstract--Antibiotic resistance among bacterial pathogens is a serious problem for human and veterinary medicine, which necessitates the development of novel therapeutics and antimicrobial strategies. Some plant-derived compounds, e.g. pentacyclic triterpenoids such as oleanolic acid (OA) and ursolic acid (UA), have potential as a new class of antibacterial agents as they are active against many bacterial species, both Gram-positive and Gram-negative, and specifically target the cell envelope. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of OA and UA on the susceptibility of four bacterial pathogens (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis) to the β-lactam antibiotics ampicillin (Ap) and oxacillin (Ox). Antimicrobial assays were conducted with bacteria growing in liquid suspension cultures (planktonic cells) or as biofilms. Using FICI value estimation and the time-kill method it was demonstrated that in some combinations, the tested compounds acted in synergy to lower the susceptibility of S. aureus, S. epidermidis and L. monocytogenes to ampicillin and oxacillin, but no synergy was observed for P. aeruginosa. These results indicate that OA and UA may be useful when administered in combination with β-lactam antibiotics to combat bacterial infections caused by some Gram-positive pathogens.—PMID: 22341643 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE][U1]

Effects of thymol on B16-F10 melanoma cells.

J Agric Food Chem. 2012 Mar 14;60(10):2746-52

Authors: Satooka H, Kubo I

Abstract--Aromatic monoterpene, thymol, shows several beneficial activities, such as an antioxidative effect. However, the mechanism of its toxicity remains to be fully defined. In preliminary studies, thymol was characterized as a melanin formation inhibitor in an enzymatic system; however, thymol showed moderate cytotoxicity but not an antimelanogenic effect on B16-F10 melanoma cells. Thymol exhibited cytotoxicity, with an IC(50) value of 400 üM (60.09 üg/mL). This moderate toxic effect was suppressed with the addition of vitamin C and vitamin D, and 20 and 40% of cell viability was increased, respectively. Subsequently, the treatment of L-cysteine on thymol-treated melanoma cells reversed the toxic effect of thymol. Moreover, a significant oxidative stress condition was observed when B16 melanoma cells were cultured with thymol. In conclusion, the antioxidant actions of thymol generate a stable phenoxy radical intermediate, which generates reactive oxygen species and quinone oxide derivatives. Thus, it is proposed that the primary mechanism of thymol toxicity at high doses is due to the formation of antioxidant-related radicals.---TPMID: 22352891 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Stealth Adapted Viruses

Alternative cellular energy pigments from bacteria of stealth virus

infected individuals

Center for Complex Infectious Diseases, 3328 Stevens Avenue, Rosemead, CA

Bacteria isolated from patients infected with stealth-adapted viruses can produce complex solid and thread-like structures similar to the alternative cellular energy pigments (ACE pigments) seen in cultures of stealth-adapted virus infected patients. Bacteria replication of stealthadapted viruses can explain why certain patients diagnosed as having delusional parasitosis insist that the particles that they believe are parasitic, increase in number even when outside of the body. Bacterial production of ACE pigments may also be contributing to the ACE pigments that can be isolated from the hair, sweat, and urine of such patients. The term viteria has been applied to stealth-adapted viruses that have acquired bacterial sequences.[U2]  Viteria infected bacteria clearly pose an important public health problem and may lead to a wider dissemination of stealth-adapted viruses.------Introduction---Bacterial sequences were detected in a virus culture from a patient infected with an African green monkey simian cytomegalovirus-derived stealth-adapted virus (Martin, 1999a). It appeared that the stealth-adapted virus[U3]

had acquired the capacity to recombine with bacterial genetic sequences and presumably had overcome the normal barrier restricting eukaryotic virus growth in prokaryotes. This argument was strengthened by the isolation of metabolically atypical bacteria from stealthadapted virus positive individuals. Pigmented solid and thread-like structures also develop in long-term cultures of stealth-adapted viruses (Martin, 2003a).They are termed alternative cellular energy pigments[U4]  (ACE pigments) and appear to provide a non-mitochondria source of cellular energy that can assist in cellular repair from the virus cytopathic effect [U5] (CPE). Similar particles have been obtained from the hair and skin of stealth virus culture positive patients (Martin, 2005). Some of these patients can readily sense the presence of these particles and feel compelled to scratch the areas of abnormal sensation. Other patients have reported that their skin-derived particles have infected their households and markedly increase in numbers over time. One such patient  reported having to continually buy fresh jars of cosmetics because those that she did use would become heavily contaminated with black specks similar to those adhering to the sponge she was using to apply her cosmetics. Along with other patients, her reports were clinically disregarded and attributed to delusional parasitosis (Bhatia et al., 2000; Goddard, 1995; Zomer et al., 1998). A more rational explanation is that the particles are ACE pigments derived from stealth-adapted virus infected bacteria. As described in this paper, ACE pigments can develop from bacterial cultures[U6] . This finding carries important public health implications, especially in light of the capacity of stealthadapted viruses to acquire potential oncogenes (Martin, 1999b). 0014-4800/$ - see front matter D 2005 Elsevier Inc. YEXMP-02649; No. of pages: 3; 4C:

Results---Fecal and throat swabs have been plated on both regular agar and blood agar plates. The plates have been observed for unusual bacterial colonies and for the formation of discrete pigmented structures. Both in the primary cultures and in repassage, abnormal solid and thread-like structures can commonly be seen developing over several days, both within and between bacterial colonies (Fig. 1). The particles can be variously pigmented and will typically fluoresce if exposed to ultraviolet light. Bacteria have also been cultured in broth media and disrupted by repeated freeze–thawing. The filtered supernatants from centrifuged extracts have been added to MRC-5 cells. Within several days, foci of foamy vacuolated cells that are characteristic of the CPE caused by stealth-adapted viruses have been observed (data not shown). --------Discussion---In spite of repeated publications, the concept of stealthadapted viruses has yet to be aggressively pursued by public health authorities. [U7] The finding that some stealth-adapted viruses were unequivocally derived from African green monkey simian cytomegalovirus (SCMV) (Martin, 1999c; Martin et al., 1995) did, however, lead to an analysis of previously released and licensed polio virus vaccines. Three of 8 lots of polio virus vaccines released in the mid-1970s were shown to be contaminated with SCMV DNA by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (Sierra-Honigmann and Krause, 2002). A patient with a chronic fatiguing and cognitively impairing illness recently decided to have his own blood and that of his ill father tested for SCMV by an animal testing laboratory. Both were reported positive for SCMV using an assay that shows no cross-reaction with human, baboon, or rhesus monkey cytomegalovirus (unpublished data). The patient also tested positive for brucellosis, a finding consistent with a prior report of the  ncorporation of bacterial sequences, some of which were brucella-related, in the original SCMV-derived stealth-adapted virus isolate (Martin, 1999a). The term viteria was chosen to describe stealth-adapted viruses that had acquired bacterial sequences and which had apparently overcome the normal barrier restricting eukaryotic virus growth in prokaryocytes. The term vifungus was also introduced since some of the novel sequences in the stealth-adapted virus culture were of apparent fungal origin (Martin, 1999a). The present paper ties the observations that unusual solid and thread-like structures can form in both cultures of stealthadapted viruses and in cultures of bacteria obtained from stealth-adapted virus infected individuals. Within the virus cultures, these structures appear to allow for cellular repair from the virus cytopathic effect. Complex structures were also seen in surviving brain cells of a stealth virus infected child (Martin, 2003b). There was very extensive disruption of the cells’ mitochondria, suggesting that the complex structures were providing an alternative source of cellular energy. A similar conclusion was drawn from studies of the virus culture-derived structures. The particles were electrostatic, occasionally magnetic, auto-fluorescent, and electron donating (Martin, 2003a). Similar properties were seen with particles obtained directly from patients’ hair and skin

(Martin, 2005). Fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy showed that the solid and thread-like structures are conglomerates of much finer particles that appear capable of self-assembly. Several stealth-adapted virus infected patients have reported continually battling an accumulation of unusual fibrous and particulate materials within their household environments. The materials appear lifelike in that the fibers would occasionally sway or bend in the absence of any

apparent external force and the more solid particles would occasionally seemingly jump towards an object, including the patient. While it cannot be ruled out that energy-producing particles could undergo some form of self-replication, a more reasonable argument is that the products accumulating within the environment, and to some extent within the patients producing abundant amounts of such particles, are assembled from chemicals synthesized by viteria infected bacteria. Since the environmental accumulations have also been associated with extensive mold infestations, the possibility of vifungus infection of household molds is also worthy of consideration. Analyses of the bacteria-derived sequences in the prototype SCMV-derived stealth-adapted virus support the contention that the genes may be metabolically empowering to the bacteria. Many of the identified genes are involved in membrane transport phenomena and in redox reactions (Martin, 1999a and unpublished observations). As with stealth virus infected cultures, remarkable longevity exceed- Fig. 1. An example of a complex pigmented structure that formed in a Petri dish that was growing bacterial colonies derived from a throat culture of a stealth-adapted virus positive patient. ing well beyond a year has been observed in bacterial cultures. In some of the broth cultures, the bacteria simply form a band slightly beneath the surface and remain essentially in a stationary phase until reintroduced into fresh broth. Upon passage, the bacteria replicate and re-establish a  seemingly indefinitely surviving culture. The public has a right to be concerned about possible bacterial transmission of stealth-adapted viruses, especially in light of the increasing incidence of the many chronic illnesses potentially attributable to these viruses. Of particular concern is the finding that the prototype SCMV-derived stealth-adapted virus with bacteria-derived sequences had also acquired cellular genes for melanoma growth stimulatory activity, a postulated human oncogene (Martin, 1999b).

ALL AMERICANS WILL RECEIVE A MICROCHIP IMPLANT IN 2013 PER OBAMACARE

A major news story broke on AOL and countless other mainstream news media outlets, this past week, that the Obama Health Care Bill will require all U.S. citizens and babies to receive a microchip or Medchip by March 23, 2013. Whether or not the microchip requirement in the bill is implemented by 2013, remains to be seen.---In 2010, my book “Are You Ready for the Microchip?” was released, and I asked the question, “Is the microchip implant hidden in the Healthcare Bill? Are newborn children starting in 2013 going to receive a microchip shortly after birth?” Then in the book, I wrote, “ In the massive US HEALTHCARE BILL, which your elected representatives voted for without reading, there is a section titled: Subtitle C-11 Sec. 2521 – National Medical Device Registry which states-“The Secretary shall establish a national medical device registry (in this subsection referred to as the ‘registry’) to facilitate analysis of postmarket safety and outcomes data on each device that—‘‘(A) is or has been used in or on a patient; and ‘‘(B) is a class III device; or ‘‘(ii) a class II device that is implantable. The language is deliberately vague, but it provides the structure for making America the first nation in the world that would require every U.S. citizen to receive an implanted radio-frequency (RFID) microchip for the purpose of controlling medical care.---A number of states like Virginia, have passed “stop the mark of the beast legislation” in an effort to stop this kind of legislation.---As with numerous other things that I have written and spoken about based on solid documentation, I am regularly challenged by some, and especially those in the Christian community, who are clueless about what is going on.[U8]  Their criticism has never prevented me from presenting the facts, because I never take a poll about what I write or speak on. A Christian is called to speak the truth in love, whether or not it is accepted. I am not trying to disparage any ministry, but I don’t determine what I say based on whether or not it is “seeker friendly,or popular. The only issue is, is it true and is it wise to communicate it at that particular time?--There are many things that I could say, but don’t, because there many people in our nation who, when confronted with a truth that is outside the box of their socially engineered consciousness, go into cognitive dissonance. As the microchip implant moves closer day by day, along with the “manufactured crisis” of illegal immigration, the problems of states like Arizona are creating an environment where Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) are moving legislation forward that would require all U.S. workers, citizens and resident alike, to obtain and carry a National Biometric ID Card in order to work within the United States. It does not matter where you stand on the issue of amnesty or immigration, everyone is going to have to have a National Biometric ID Card that will eventually contain an RFID transmitter which will allow Big Brother electronic data bases to track all of your personal information. It is a simply a national ID card under another name. The national ID card will transition into a microchip implant, because that is technically more efficient. All of this which is about to happen very soon, is just the tip of the iceberg.---President Ronald Reagan refused to pass what he called this “Mark of the Beast” legislation. In my book, “Are You Ready for the Microchip?,” I examine the careful wording in the Health Care Bill which calls for a Med-Chip and a microchip implant. It was never hidden, it is simply Republican and Democrat, along with our corporate-controlled and Orwellian media, who deliberately chose to ignore it. The Bilderberg Group gave orders to microchip the entire U.S. population and then the world. Before the Health Care Bill was passed, the target date was set for the year 2013, when every baby born in the U.S. will receive a microchip at birth. Many are attacking President Obama for this, but although it is the Obama Health Care Bill, the microchip plan was created decades ago and put onto the fast track by the Republican Administration of President George Bush and his allegedly “born-again” Attorney General, John Ashcroft, after 911. It seems Ashcroft was more concerned about covering up the breasts of a Lady Liberty statue in the hallway of the Department of Justice, than he was about protecting our Constitutional liberties, which include the freedom of religion.---Unfortunately, Evangelical Christians make excellent political pawns because they focus on secondary issues, rather than the important issues. This is because Evangelical Christianity in America today does not have a truly Biblical worldview. I truly do not want to sound unkind, but the historical reality is that Evangelical Christians have played the part of what Lenin called “useful idiots.” Obviously, this is not what God planned for His people. But, by rejecting a Biblical worldview, the Scripture, “My people perish for lack of knowledge,” is fulfilled. The majority of Evangelical Christians in America have a very superficial faith as a result of what they are being taught in many of their churches and seminaries.---The new microchip technology with an RFID chip is so advanced it sounds like science fiction. The Apostle Paul explains how this fits into Revelation 13, where the False Prophet will head a one world religion and force people to accept the mark of the beast. A microchip implant, biochip implant or med chip, in and of itself, is not necessarily the mark of the beast. The mark of the beast under the direction of the False Prophet, requires the conscious rejection of Jesus Christ as Lord and a commitment to worship the Antichrist as God.---The challenge for Christians and others will be the very act of taking a microchip implant, biochip implant or med chip, simply because of its parallel to the Biblical mark of the beast. Will people of faith be exempted for religious reasons or will they be forced to take it or imprisoned[U9] . In addition, any microchip technology could be activated with enhanced controls after it is implanted. So what starts out as a simple microchip implant could become a technology where at some future time, you must worship the Antichrist as God[U10] , and reject Jesus Christ as Lord in order to participate in the economic system. The built-in and evolving capacity of microchip technology makes this a dangerous possibility.

In the final analysis, the simple act of accepting the implantation of a microchip for medical reasons appears harmless on the surface. However, there is no guarantee that once it is implanted, that it will not be activated for mark of the beast technology. This is the danger and challenge that lies before us.

Composition and health effects of phenolic compounds in hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) of different origins.

J Sci Food Agric. 2012 Jun;92(8):1578-90

Authors: Yang B, Liu P

Abstract--Epicatechin, aglycons and glycosides of B-type oligomeric procyanidins and flavonols, phenolic acids and C-glycosyl flavones are the major groups of phenolic compounds in hawthorn (Crataegus spp). The total content of phenolic compounds is higher in the leaves and flowers than in the fruits. Procyanidins dominate in the fruits, whereas flavonol glycosides and C-glycosyl flavones are most abundant in the leaves. Genotype and developmental/ripening stage have strong impacts. Procyanidin glycosides and C-glycosyl flavones may be chemotaxonomic markers differentiating species and varieties of hawthorn. Future research shall improve the separation, identification and quantification of procyanidins with degree of polymerisation (DP) ≥ 6, procyanidin glycosides, C-glycosyl flavones and some flavonol glycosides. In vitro and animal studies have shown cardioprotective, hypolipidaemic, hypotensive, antioxidant, radical-scavenging and anti-inflammatory potentials of hawthorn extracts, suggesting different phenolic compounds as the major bioactive components. However, the varying and insufficiently defined composition of the extracts investigated, as a result of different raw materials and extraction methods, makes comparison of the studies very difficult. Clinical evidence indicates that some hawthorn extracts may increase the exercise tolerance of patients with congestive heart failure. More clinical studies are needed to establish the effects of hawthorn, especially in healthy humans.--PMID: 22488722 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

The antimicrobial activities of processed Nigerian and South African black tea.

Afr J Med Med Sci. 2010 Dec;39 Suppl:145-51

Authors: Ojo OA, Yunusa AO, Akindele SK, Vera VN, Fowora N

Abstract
The antibacterial activity of processed Nigerian Lipton Tea and South African 5 Roses Tea, extracted using distilled water, chloroform and 70% ethanol were determined against nine (9) enteropathogenic bacteria which includes; Bacillus subtilis, Proteus sp, Enterobacter sp., Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella paratyphi A, Salmonella arizona and Staphylococcus aureus. The 2 tea bags, Nigerian Lipton tea bag and the South African 5 Roses tea bag were extracted through Solvent extraction method using 3 extraction solvents; Distilled water, Chloroform and 70% Ethanol and then inoculated onto the Mueller-Hinton agar plates containing the standard isolates at 6 different points on each plate. The zones of inhibition of the bacterial isolates produced by each of these tea - extracts were determined while meaningful antibacterial activities against five (5) of the standard isolates; Enterobacter sp., K. pneumoniae, S. paratyphi A, B. subtilis and S. aureus were observed. Lipton tea water-extract was a more effective antibacterial agent than water-extract of 5 Roses tea. While the 70% ethanol-extract of 5 Roses tea had the greatest antibacterial activity of all the different tea-extract used for the study, the chloroform-extracts of the tea bags had no antimicrobial effect on all the test organisms used.---PMID: 22416657 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Recipe on Black tea—take the teas mentioned---five rose tea was the more powerful of the 2 butt that does not mean the lipton will not be effective either---it just means it can be used and maybe more would have to be utilize to get the effect---take them and either boil them and drink or take the leaves and extract them in a alcohol base---in this case a 70% alcohol---If you cannot find this the use a smirnoff 50% or a Jamaican 53%  or what ever you can find clear based and is a high percentage of alcohol---we will just have to be double extracted to get it more potent—what you do is take the tea –1/4 cup and add ½ cup of alcohol and 1/8 cup of water---blend at highest speed for 10 minutes—stop blender –strain and then add the extract back into the blender and add another 1/8 cup of tea and re blend again for another 7-10 minutes strain and then apply this using ½ tsp increments—or add it to your warm tea- and  consume

Stop Taking Supplements--Propaganda

They’re expensive, they don’t improve performance, and they might make you test positive for dope.

Hardy is among a growing number of athletes who have traced a positive doping test back to a tainted supplement. Swimmer Kicker Vencill and cyclists Flavia Oliveira and Scott Moninger (an acquaintance of mine), also tested positive after taking supplements, and 400-meter gold medalist LaShawn Merritt linked his positive dope test to a product called Extenz that he picked up at 7-Eleven. The problem is so prevalent that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has developed an educational campaign for athletes, called Supplements 411.[U1]

Supplements are risky thanks in part to a piece of legislation passed in 1994 called the Dietary Supplements and Health Education Act. The DSHEA essentially deregulated dietary supplements, including vitamins, herbs, protein shake mixes, nutritional supplements, and other powders and pills that millions of people of all levels of athletic ability might take to improve their health[U2] . Most people assume that if a product is available on store shelves, it must be OK. But supplements are not required to be evaluated or proven safe or effective before they’re sold. New rules finalized in 2007 gave the FDA power to regulate the manufacturing and packaging of supplements, but the agency’s ability to police supplement companies remains limited by DSHEA. Its chief author and most powerful advocate is Sen. Orrin Hatch, whose home state of Utah is home to much of the U.S. supplement industry. Hatch, who attributes his good health to the supplements he takes each day, fought a recent amendment to increase the FDA's ability to regulate the industry.

FDA investigations have repeatedly found safety problems with supplements, including dangerous ingredients—everything from diet pills containing a drug previously pulled from the market due to safety concerns to body-building supplements packed with anabolic steroids. These are hardly isolated cases. A 2004 study found that 18 percent of nutritional supplements purchased in the United States contained undeclared anabolic androgenic steroids. The FDA has also warned consumers about supplements laced with dangerous levels of selenium and chromium. In 2009, college baseball player Jareem Gunter told a Senate hearing that he'd ended up in the hospital with liver failure after taking a body-building supplement, and late last year, the Army set up a probe to investigate whether body-building supplements containing dimethylamylamine, or DMAA, a stimulant that can narrow blood vessels and arteries, were involved in the deaths of two soldiers and liver and kidney damage in others.

In April, the FDA sent warning letters to 10 supplement makers and distributors marketing "natural" stimulants such as Hemo Rage Black,  Jack3D, and Biorhythm SSIN Juice that contained DMAA, warning that DMAA did not qualify as a dietary ingredient. (Manufacturers told the New York Times they disagreed.) A recent Chicago Tribune investigation reported that the FDA has discovered manufacturing violations in nearly half of the 450 dietary supplement producers it has inspected since new rules gave the agency more oversight five years ago.

Given these dangers, why on earth would athletes take supplements[U3] ? Hardy popped the pills expecting them to help her recover after races and practices. AdvoCare’s website makes at least nine claims about Arginine Extreme—it can “support nutrient delivery to muscles,” “promote short-term increases in nitric oxide levels,” nourish “the precursors necessary for muscle growth and recovery,” “enhance strength and stamina, (“especially when used with AdvoCare Muscle Fuel”), and help “maintain a healthy cardiovascular system” and an “efficient immune system.”

These are big promises, especially from a product whose declared ingredients [U4] consist of nothing more than some amino acids and vitamins. Like most supplements purporting to enhance athletic performance, AdvoCare’s products are not backed by peer-reviewed clinical trials, just testimonials, the endorsements of professional athletes, and some scientific advisory board members with MDs or Ph.D.s behind their names.

When studies do appear to support supplement companies’ claims, they are usually small and at best can offer only hints of efficacy, not definitive proof[U5] . As I learned first-hand during my earnest attempt to study the effects of beer on running, even seemingly robust study designs can lead you to a dodgy conclusion. My study could have easily been interpreted to show that beer made women better runners, but as a participant of the study, I discovered problems in the standard protocols that might not have been apparent otherwise. A series of reports published July 19 in BMJ found “a striking lack of evidence to support claims about improved performance and recovery” made by products aimed at athletes like sports drinks and supplements and concluded that it is “virtually impossible for the public to make informed choices about the benefits and harms of advertised sports products.”

Despite the scarcity of evidence, athletes continue to take supplements at high rates. A 2009 study estimated that 85 percent of elite track and field athletes took supplements, and 87 percent of Canadian athletes who participated in a survey published this year reported taking dietary supplements in the previous six months.[U6]

According to FDA rules, supplements are supposed to contain substances that could be obtained through food.[U7]  That means vitamins, minerals, and nutrients like carbohydrates, amino acids, or protein. But there’s no reason to think athletes benefit from supplementing their diets with these things. Elite athletes spend hours each day training and must consume thousands of calories. It’s hard to become nutrient-deficient when you’re eating that much. The American College of Sports Medicine’s position statement says, “vitamin and mineral supplements are not needed if adequate energy to maintain body weight is consumed from a variety of foods.”

The one exception is iron, which often becomes depleted in menstruating women, especially if they don’t eat much meat. (Low iron stores can lead to fatigue and poor performance.) But you rarely see sport supplements touting iron. Instead, advertisements target athletes with dubious claims that supplements can boost red blood cells or build muscle “naturally.” And these pitches are often shrouded in pseudo-scientific language. When a supplement is promising results that you wouldn’t expect from simple good nutrition, chances are the claim is bogus or the supplement contains an illicit, undeclared drug.

Coaches and trainers, too, are often fooled. Most have little scientific training, and the supplement industry bombards them with literature about nutrition. And there’s plenty of incentive to believe the hype. Endorsement deals from supplement companies provide a major source of income for many teams, coaches, and athletes, and trainers or coaches sometimes get paid to peddle supplements to their athletes.[U8]

Under the best-case scenario, a supplement provides an expensive source of a nutrient that the athlete could be getting from food. Worst-case scenario, it's providing dangerous levels of heavy metals, pesticide residues, undeclared drugs, or illicit performance-enhancers that may show up on a drug test. USADA provides detailed advice for athletes contemplating the use of supplements, including a list of red flags that should make them think twice about using a product, such as promises that they'll enhance muscle-building or energy or claims about "proprietary blends" that are "clinically proven."

Given the slew of high-profile doping cases traced back to supplements, and USADA’s concerted efforts to educate athletes, it’s hard not to suspect that some of these runners, swimmers, and cyclists know exactly what they’re doing. I have no reason to think that Hardy had any intention of doping, but cases like hers may give cover to genuine cheaters. After all, the designer steroid that took down Marion Jones and Barry Bonds was created and distributed through a supplement company—the Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative (BALCO) that gave the scandal its name.

If I were a doper, I'd be sure to have a medicine cabinet full of supplements—ones [U9] that claim to produce the same results as my drugs. Then, if I ever tested positive for doping, I'd have a plausible excuse.

Betaine Hydrochloride(HCL) With Pepsin

Stomach Acid
Individuals suffering with stomach and intestinal problems most frequently assume that heartburn, indigestion, gas, and reflux are caused by overproduction of stomach acid. This common misconception has been strongly re-enforced by our conventional medical profession, whose practitioners routinely prescribe stomach acid blocking medications at the slightest sign of stomach dysfunction, failing to properly diagnose the digestive problem by first monitoring the stomach's acid producing function, using scientific methods and neglecting to provide patients with common sense dietary recommendations.

The Symptoms of Over and Under-Production Are The Same
Strangely enough, the symptoms of stomach acid (hydrochloric acid, HCL) over-production and under production are virtually identical. It is therefore unwise to jump to conclusions regarding what's occurring in the stomach without actual testing.

Medical Misdiagnosis Is Very Common
The pharmaceutical firms with their considerable influence on the medical profession have, through advertising, incentives to doctors and various other forms of indoctrination, made it an almost reflex reaction on the part of most physicians, even many gastro-enterologists, to jump to the conclusion that a majority of gastric problems can be easily treated by the use of acid blocking medications.
Because the American public over-consumes unhealthy food at an alarming rate, the routine use of acid blockers is highly profitable for pharmaceutical firms, provides instant relief for many sufferers, but can bring about long-term health problems for many misdiagnosed users.

Functions of Hydrochloric Acid
Hydrochloric acid serves many functions, the three most important are:
1. It is the primary digestive juice responsible for breaking down proteins, preparing them for assimilation.
2.
It acts as a protective barrier, killing many potentially harmful micro-organisms in our food.
3. It acts as a venting mechanism for the build-up of excessive concentrations of hydrogen ions in our blood and interstitial fluids. In other words, we consume acid forming foods and / or engage in acid forming activity, the production of stomach acid uses up considerable amounts of the acid forming material (hydrogen ions) thereby assisting in the elimination of excessive tissue acidity. The stomach acid once combined with food is eventually
neutralized further down the alimentary canal by alkaline pancreatic secretions.

Underproduction Of Stomach Acid Is A Common Problem
Based upon the testing of sample groups, it has been theorized that well over half of the U.S. population beyond the age of fifty years is under-producing hydrochloric acid on a constant basis, leading to a host of digestive and immune disturbances. One need not be of middle age to have this problem, nowadays it's not uncommon in younger persons as well. The demineralized, devitalized diet that so many are consuming greatly contributes to this problem, which can be significantly compounded by many individuals' preference for extremely low salt intake.

Testing
A test, the "Heidelberg Capsule Test" is available (unfortunately few physicians have the equipment in their offices to provide it) that is capable of scientifically determining the stomach's ability to produce adequate concentrations of acid (HCL). If this test is not available to you, another "low tech" method of making a correct determination is available. This involves the use of a Betaine Hydrochloride supplement that is used as a challenge substance, when eating, to see if digestive function improves with its use.

Directions For Use of Betaine HCL
When using Betaine HCL with Pepsin for the first few times, please be sure to follow the directions carefully. Always take Betaine HCL at the start of the meal! If taken without food, stomach burning may result.

1
. At the very start of the meal, take one capsule of Betaine HCL. Monitor how your stomach feels during and after eating. Should any burning or heaviness occur, or if burning has been present previously (before taking the supplement) and is now worsened with the use of the Betaine HCL, do not continue using this supplement!!! This is an indication that your stomach is overproducing acid, or that your stomach lining may be damaged. In such cases, please consider the use of baking soda and fermented dairy products, to normalize excess acid production and heal the stomach lining.

2. If the first dose of Betaine HCL produced no noticeable stomach discomfort, try taking two capsules at the start of your next meal, again monitor for burning and or heaviness during and after eating. If taking two capsules produces some discomfort, but one capsule does not, restrict yourself to one capsule at the start of each meal. If the two capsule dose produced no discomfort, try three capsules at the start of your next meal.

3. If all goes well when taking three capsules at the start of each meal, stay with that dosage, most individuals will not require increasing the dosage to four capsules. Regular use of supplemental hydrochloric acid will in most cases "re-train" the stomach to produce higher concentrations of acid on its own. This process may take anywhere from several weeks to several months, depending on the individual. The most significant indication that acid production is improving
[U10] is that Betaine HCL supplementation can no longer be comfortably tolerated.

An Example:
After having used the Betaine HCL for eleven weeks, at a dosage of two capsules per meal, without any discomfort, Joan now notices that she feels a burning sensation when taking the two capsules. She therefore reduces her dosage to one capsule at mealtime. After several more weeks, even one capsule per meal produces burning and Joan discontinues altogether. This is a sign that the stomach has been re-trained to produce adequate concentrations of hydrochloric acid without the further need for supplementation.

When consuming meals that contain little or no protein, much less hydrochloric acid is needed by the stomach to process its contents. Please keep this in mind when using Betaine HCL as a supplement and modify your usage accordingly.

Salt Consumption And HCL Production
Unfortunately, much misinformation regarding the use of salt in the diet has been circulating for the last three decades or so. The body needs salt (NaCl) and cannot function adequately without it. Low salt diets can make it very difficult if not impossible for the stomach to produce adequate amounts of hydrochloric acid. The problem is not salt per se, but the quality of the salt. Using unrefined, highly mineralized sea salt is perfectly safe and healthful to the system. This type of salt is grayish in color and is produced by traditional methods used for many hundreds of years. Available in most good natural food stores it comes from Brittany and goes by names such as "Celtic Sea Salt" and "Star of the Sea". The more common white sea salt sold in most stores does not have the same healthful properties. Individuals with high blood pressure need not necessarily avoid salt. Salt over-consumption is only implicated in about twenty percent of hypertensive individuals (kidney related hypertension).

Biological Functions and Therapeutic Uses of Hydrochloric Acid

Digestive System

Hydrochloric Acid regulates the acidity of the Stomach to optimize Digestion.  This occurs primarily through Hydrochloric Acid stimulating the conversion of Pepsinogen to Pepsin (a Proteolytic (Protein-digesting) Enzyme).

Immune System

Hydrochloric Acid may destroy some Detrimental Microorganisms that gain entrance into the body via the Mouth:

Hydrochloric Acid may kill some forms of Detrimental Bacteria in the Stomach and Small Intestine

Hydrochloric Acid is likely to be important in suppressing Campylobacter jejuni.

Hydrochloric Acid may suppress or kill Helicobacter pylori (Hypochlorhydria (lack of Hydrochloric Acid) patients have increased levels of Helicobacter pylori).  references

Oral Health

Hydrochloric Acid deficiency may cause Periodontal Disease (by decreasing the absorption of Calcium in the Alveolar Bone).

Skin-Supplemental Hydrochloric Acid may be useful for the treatment of Hives (as many cases of Hives are believed to occur as a result of Food Allergies resulting from insufficient endogenous production of Hydrochloric Acid).

Vitiligo patients are often found to have sub-optimal levels of Hydrochloric Acid in their Stomachs and replenishment of Hydrochloric Acid (15 cc with each meal) has resulted in many cures of Vitiligo.

Unusual’ number of fires, smart meters linked

Ontario fire marshal says faulty base plates could be the cause, similar to Mission blaze

An example of a fire incident occurring around a hydro meter in Ontario. From a report done by the Office of the Fire Marshal Fire Investigation Services in Ontario

Smart meter installations are the suspected cause of an “unusual” number of fires similar to a recent electrical fire at a home in Mission, according to a recent investigation by the Ontario fire marshal’s office. BC Hydro is in the process of a $1-billion installation of the meters, which use wireless technology to transmit information about electricity consumption to power utilities, [U11] following the lead of provinces and states including Ontario and California. There’s no evidence to suggest that the meters themselves are overheating and catching [U12] fire, but it appears from an Ontario fire marshal’s report, dated June 15, 2012, that the base plates, or four-pronged sockets that meters plug into, can become compromised and start to burn if they’re old or suffer rough handling during installation.--[U13] -“It’s like everything else, once it’s installed and intact nothing usually happens,” said Surrey electrical contractor Bill Strain, a former president of the Canadian Home Builders Association. “A lot of times, when you pull something apart, if it’s been there for 30 years it’s probably going to be rusted in or hard in.[U14]  So they have to give it a little bit of a jerk or a twist. That jerk or twist may be what sets the whole thing in motion,” Strain said Friday. If there’s a problem, he added, it’s possible that a contractor without formal electrical training may miss it.--A resident of Mission, Trish Regan, recently lost her home in a fire that the district’s fire department said appeared to originate from a broken base plate that became overheated and caught fire a few hours after an employee of Corix, the company contracted by BC Hydro to install the meters, plugged one in at her home. Arkady Tsisserev, chair of the Canadian Electrical Code Committee, noted in an email that much of the work involved in smart meter installation falls outside the oversight of the Canadian Electrical (CE) Code. “Revenue meters are covered by specific requirements of the power utilities which collect revenue from their customers for use of the electric energy. “I’m aware of a number of fires that were supposedly attributed to installation and use of ‘smart meters’ in various jurisdictions throughout the country,” Tsisserev wrote. “In fact, at the recent meeting of the CE Code committee, the members were presented with a comprehensive report produced by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office.”---According to the marshal’s report, “During our initial research of the new meters we encountered an unusual amount of fire incidents involving smart meters. After discovering these incidents our main question was, were they one-off incidents or was there a similar systemic root cause---“Anecdotal information supported [the fact that] problems occurred after the old analog meters were updated to the new digital smart meters.”[U15]  The report noted the possibility [U16] of a fire resulting from “a loose connection in the meter base.” --“What could be the reason for this? The old meter base connections may not have been in a condition for seamless exchange to a new meter. New meters may have defects that cause electrical failures or misalignment with old meter base. Careless installation during changeover.”---Meter changeovers are not unusual; before the smart meter project, Hydro was replacing about 40,000 old analogue meters per year with new ones.---In 0.5 per cent of cases, Hydro installers noted a faulty meter base and replaced it,[U17]  according to smart meter deputy project officer Fiona Taylor. -That’s more or less the same base plate replacement ratio that’s arising from the smart meter installation, she said.[U18]  Cindy Verschoor, Hydro spokeswoman, said that unless a homeowner notices problems after the installation — such as lights flickering on and off, or dimming and brightening — there’s no need to worry about a problem with the plate.---“If you notice anything unusual of course give us a call or arrange to have an electrician do an inspection,” Verschoor said. “You can tell by your lights. That’s the best indicator.”[U19]  Verschoor said Corix installation supervisors are certified electricians and they’re always on standby to effect any plate repairs noted by the installers.---Gwenne Farrell, vice-president of Hydro inside workers union COPE 378, said the union isn’t prepared to blame installers for the Mission incident but they challenge the “dismissive” way Hydro has pushed the project along regardless of public objections to the meters and a lack of regulatory scrutiny of the costs associated with the program.---“They have been legislated to have these installations competed by Dec. 31 of this year and they’re going forward with that, regardless,” Farrell said. “There are people who have overall concerns about the smart meters, people who don’t want them. They don’t seem to even acknowledge that there is a lot of concern about these smart meters going in.”---Jonathan Hodes, a lawyer with Miller Thomson LLP who is familiar with insurance claims, anticipates that Regan’s insurance company will look to recover the cost of any payout it makes to the homeowner.--------It’s possible that Hydro could take similar action. “If Hydro does get sued at some point I would expect – it wouldn’t surprise me at all – if they filed a defence or a response to the lawsuit blaming whoever they think they can blame to try to avoid liability,” Hodes said.

[U1]This is more like a weeding out---when the Olympians are being endorced by these companies and there is a lot of ego and prestige here --and exposure---you will see more of this Hype on "tainted Vitamins" because alot of these athletes are all on steroids--not one of them are not---to perform and excell at the rates they do they are taking there "special vitamins" the olympic committee could not find there arse from a hole in the ground much less doping---and this to increases favoritism to those companies that spend the most and to as well increase the powers of the FDA and EFSA--to further take away the stuff that cann assist you in sustaing your health---this is not just about money it is all about control and then you hear these athletes whine like whipped cream saying they are blaming these supplements that in most cases ( thre are some that are being used to transport the illegal roid) which are not to blame---they got caught because they did not mask there use or they were targeted and stripped of any opportunity to offset any potential upset to a higher paying endorcer---and that is what really goes on --not this HS they spew all over the net

[U2]This is another pile of HS---Supplements havs some of the toughest regulations going--just go look at the DSHEA act and see how restricted they are--the issue is about drug Medical industry losing it's shirt because  people find solutions to there health issues bypassing Doctors and Hospitals and in the end drug companies---the agenda

[U3]You know what is interesting---the FDA warns supplement companies that they are selling something illegal when they are not---they are selling something effective and works but because a drug company would lose countless points and popularity the supplement get attacked and berated as some kind of toxin and then removed from the public domain and what could be a boon is now lost through the ignorance of the people who just believe these kind of reports with out questioning---where there any deaths—how many –and where –and how did it occur –what was being used with it---was the person on a medication that reacted---see these are things they do not display

[U4]What is interesting they do work when applied properly ---they again belittle these things to give the impression they are useless and not worth taking when in fact you do a NIH-pubmed-new England journal of medicine –quertle search you can actually see the merits which they refuse to acknowledge

[U5]Again More BS---the person who wrote this article either A was paid well to decimate the truth  B does really not know anything about these things and how they can actually have curative abilities and augment peoples abilities—so again more disnfo

[U6]There  must be a reason whay they do---perhaps because –they work??

[U7]Or natural occurring---wish they would get it right eh!!

[U8]This here is another interesting fabrication---yes coaches see the ads and try some of these things but in a short time anyone training anyone can see what is really working and what does not---and this is implying coaches are either blind or daft..

[U9]This person is a dope---who has little regard for the truth nor understands nutrition or training---and would be laughed out of any serious conversation with anyone informed---yes he is right there are athletes in the Olympics who use steroids –about 99.9% of them do and the ones that get the attention are rivals of some major investor who has a huge investment riding on a favourite to popularize there name---look at the movie hunger games—and you can se e how things get rigged---this article is a sham and is a front for the EFSA and FDA and CODEX to eliminate from everyone access to something healthy

[U10]The best way I find to take HCL is to consume a food 1 – 2 spoonful or for and then take the supplement

[U11]Among other things--like identifying when you are home or away allowing for potential illegal searches of the home--also allowing people who work in the idustry to snoop on your whereabouts and what you maybe doing--Big Borther Anyone!!?

[U12]If this is the case then why did it burn?? Pumping out 9600 times more emf then a cell phone should heat something up

[U13]Don’t you just love the BS..when they replace these meters ---and not change a base plate would not this show incompetence---and purposeful neglect?? Just a thought

[U14]So again---30 years or hard in and you’re not replacing this??? And you know it is producing a high frequency of EMF’s which produce HEAT!!

[U15]After they were put in…. Bad technology

[U16]You Mean –You Do Not KNOW!!!!!??? Orrrrrr is it the fact you know this is dangerious tech---EMF pulsing---and are not telling the general public this is baddddd Tech

[U17]Sooo what are we saying here that an analogue meter is safer and the replacement of the base plaes was minimal and there were NO FIRES???

[U18]See the distraction again we changed about the same ---if that is the case then there is a discrepancy here—something is definitely different to have a fire outbreak with one technology and nothing with another.

[U19]Why  would you change it in the first place if the original meter was working without any issue?

How to Make an Essential Oil Distiller from Kitchen Equipment

Make an Essential Oil Distiller from Kitchen Equipment

Essential oil distillers extract concentrated oils from plant material. Unlike infused oils, essential oils are pure and contain oil only from the plant being distilled. ---Essential oil distillers can be quite expensive. It is possible to use common kitchen equipment to produce a homemade distiller. The equipment used to make a the distiller should be made only of glass or stainless steel.

Instructions

    • 1 --Distiller Base
The base of the distiller should be a large stainless steel stock pot. When the distiller is in operation, this is where the plant material and water will be heated to produce steam. Maintain a temperature that slowly produces steam without over-heating the plant material.

    • 2 ----Condenser
The condenser can be made of a lid placed upside down on the stock pot, a heat-safe glass dish, or pie plate that completely covers the top of the stock pot. When the distiller is in operation, steam rises and carries the plant oils to the condenser. The condenser cools the steam separating the oil from the water in the steam. Ice should be placed on top of the condenser to facilitate cooling.

    • 3 ---Collector
A collector is a bowl placed inside the stock pot to catch the essential oil as it drips back down after cooled. The collector should be elevated above the level of water and plant material. It should be in the center of the stock pot. A steamer insert makes a good base for raising the collector above water level while operating the essential oil distiller.

    • 4 to further separate the oil and water ---put the container in a freezer  and the water will freeze and the oil then will pour out –which will give you a purer product

Adverse Side Effects of Lipitor –atorvastatin-1997-2012

I was last able to access MedWatch data in 2006. The process had not been easy for it meant I had to tackle the immense challenge of reviewing manually some 64,000 Lipitor® Adverse Drug Reports (ADRs) using "find" on my computer. What prompted me to do this personal search of what most would agree is the FDA's business, is the almost total lack of awareness by doctors of statin associated cognitive dysfunction, emotional and behavioral disorders and cases of disabling neuro-muscular degeneration. Clearly doctors have not been informed. --Yet I know of the many thousands of MedWatch reports that have been submitted. In some cases I have been instrumental in helping distraught victims make their MedWatch report.--Based upon my personal cognitive experience with this drug, amnesia was the first search term I entered. Not unexpectedly, out popped 1,302 case reports for amnesia in the MedWatch files. Adding the search term "memory impairment" added another 663 cases. This gave a total of 1965 reports of serious cognitive dysfunction associated with the use of Lipitor.---A word of caution concerning gross under-reporting deserves to be mentioned here. First of all, anyone experienced with the operation of such optional reporting systems as MedWatch fully realize that the results are but an approximation of the actual numbers.  Estimates for reporting of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) range from 1% to 10% meaning that the actual number of adverse reactions could be ten to a hundred times those reported to MedWatch. --Additionally, only the more severe forms of cognitive dysfunction get reported-the transient global amnesia and severe memory loss cases. Rarely included, and therefore expected to be missed, are the more minor forms of cognitive loss such as confusion and disorientation and unusual forgetfulness.---Then we have the category of short term cognitive loss with durations measured in seconds and minutes that by their very nature will rarely be recognized even by the victim, say nothing of an observer, yet might be so critical to a pilot. The passage of time is too short for recognition yet special studies have revealed just how common they can be. ---Despite the fact that in February, 2012 the FDA for the first time announced cognitive dysfunction as a major side effect of statin drugs, they immensely under-played its seriousness. At no time did they even mention transient global amnesia; a strange form of completely incapacitating amnesia in which the victim abruptly, without the slightest warning, loses the ability to formulate new memory, accompanied by retrograde loss of memory for decades into their past. ---The past decade has seen a big increase in reports of this once rare condition. They instead mentioned some transient episodes of confusion and disorientation might occur that usually were mild and passed with no complications. Never a word was said about the possibility of a military or civilian commercial pilot suddenly encountering this form of amnesia with retrograde loss of their flight training. ---It is not only pilots that need to worry. This concern applies to anyone whose occupation requires extra vigilance including professional drivers, heavy equipment operators, surgeons, military personnel, etc.

Applying additional cognitive search terms gave me 222 reports of "dementia," 523 case reports of "disorientation" and 602 reports of "confusional state." I next searched among words that might reflect the curious effects of statin drugs on emotion and behavior now being reported. I found 347 reports using the search terms "aggressiveness," "paranoia" and "irritability" commonly reported in statin users. Use of the search term "depression" yielded 1,142 reports of which 118 expressed "suicidal ideation."---Since it also was in February, 2012 that FDA first mentioned the persistent seriousness of rhabdomyolysis, that was the next search term I entered. Rhabdomyolysis is an especially serious form of muscle damage with a fatality rate of 10%. You may recall that it was rhabdomyolysis that brought down cerivastatin (Baycol) with some 60 deaths in the year 2004 causing Bayer to remove it from the market. --------Deaths in these cases are due to kidney failure caused by the blockage of renal tubules by fragments from damaged muscle cells that have been carried to the kidneys in the bloodstream. I counted 2,731 MedWatch reports of rhabdomyolysis. Removing Baycol from the market in 2004 did not stop the statin-associated loss of lives from rhabdomyolysis. Lipitor quickly filled this void and similar rhabdomyolysis death rates can be expected from the other strong statins. I calculate that each year Lipitor accounts for more than 20 deaths from rhabdomyolysis. ----
Applying additional search terms bearing on the muscular system I found 1,325 reports of "myalgia" and 494 reports of "musculoskeletal stiffness." Applying the search term "renal failure" gave me 2,240 responses, comparing favorably with the 2,731 MedWatch reports of rhabdomyolysis cases, knowing that many, if not most, of these would be accompanied by varying degrees of renal involvement.------Being well aware of the great numbers of reports of peripheral neuropathy in my repository, the next term I chose was "neuropathy" which yielded 1,294 reports to MedWatch. It should be mentioned that almost all of these peripheral neuropathy reports have proven to be very resistant to traditional treatment and many now deserve to be called permanent. Using the term "Guillain-Barré syndrome"-a disorder affecting the peripheral nervous system-gave 98 reports, and prompted by hundreds of case reports I have received complaining of leg and arm pain, the search term "pain in extremity" gave 3,498 reports.---Next I put in the search term, "hepatitis." Before I tell you the number, I first must qualify it by warning you that there are many different kinds of hepatitis. There is hepatitis A, B, C, cholestatic, autoimmune, fulminating, acute, chronic and viral, including cytomegalovirus. All of these terms are used in this compilation of Lipitor damage reports. However, the overwhelming majority of these reports said simply, "hepatitis" with no qualifier. Since hepatitis has always been a warned concern from statin use you must make up your own mind in interpreting the 2,102 total cases that resulted. ----When I realized that "liver function abnormalities" also was being used in the MedWatch diagnoses list, I used it as a search term, reporting 842 liver function abnormalities in addition to the 2,102 hepatitis cases for a grand total of 2,944.----I should add here my thoughts on the way liver function test guidelines have been grossly manipulated during the statin era. -----------Some twenty years ago, doctors were still advised to use the guidelines that I had been accustomed to since my medical school training. Now, starting close to 1990, the time when statin use began to get seriously underway, doctors were asked to replace their usual routine of using the mean plus 2 standard deviations (SDs) with the mean plus 10 SDs to determine when an elevation of liver enzyme due to statins was significant or not. ----This incredible distortion of reality was done in order that we not get too excited about 2 SDs when dealing with statins. The previous guidelines no longer applied. I am still trying to figure out how the clinical pathologists got away with that. It made no sense then and much less sense now. Inflammation is inflammation. When dealing with statins we have been asked to accept small amounts of inflammation as normal.--------Since the unexpected association of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with statin use was reported by Ralph Edwards of the World Health Organization using their VigiBase® data, my next investigation of Lipitor MedWatch data was for search terms that might give a measure of ALS occurrence. "Unusual weakness" turned up 2,516 case reports, "balance disorders" gave 596 responses and "coordination abnormalities" gave 195 responses. ----
More on ALS and statins----------Relevant to diabetes, in a recent article in the NEJM http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp1203020 a meta-analysis of six statin trials is referenced that revealed a 13% increase in the relative risk of new-onset diabetes in those taking a statin. The FDA also added an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes to their February 2012 warnings-an amazing side effect for a medicine that is supposed to diminish the risk of cardiovascular disease. I used the search term "pancreatitis" to see how much of this diabetes might reflect organ damage. I found 604 reports of pancreatitis.---I see this as part of a whole body process of mitochondrial DNA damage aggravated by the use of statins. Even on our good days, mitochondrial mutations occur by the tens of thousands leading to progressive mitochondrial loss followed in time by cell loss and finally, with sufficient time, organ damage in the well known process of aging. -----All of this is the inevitable consequence of normal metabolic activity. It is theft of electrons from adjacent tissues, including DNA strands, that causes the damage. CoQ10 plays a major role not only in energy formation via electron transfer but also anti-oxidation, minimizing buildup of oxidizing byproducts of metabolism and slowing down DNA damage. Via inhibition of CoQ10, statins play a major role in what amounts to enhancement of the aging process.----------Applying the search term cancer (of all kinds) gave me 1,642 official reports to MedWatch of which 422 were reported as breast cancer. I next tried the search term "cardiac failure" and turned up 720 reports. CoQ10 inhibition is felt to be the major contributor to this condition. My next search was "myocardial infarction"-out of curiosity-to see how many might there be in a group already on Lipitor. The figure was 2,520-another attention getter, especially when I got 610 additional reports using the search term "coronary artery occlusion." ---When you get a total of 3,030 cardiac events in a group already on statins you are justified in wondering just how much protection is being offered? Use of the search term "cerebrovascular accident" (a stroke) yielded 1,562 reports with another 159 inferred by the use of the search term "aphasia."---My last search focused on tendon complications. I found 436 from Lipitor over the time period of this report. This relatively obscure finding is based upon the role of cholesterol in tendon and ligament function. Most orthopedic surgeons are well aware of this relationship.----The FDA has a first rate monitoring system but a grossly deficient one for reporting findings back to the medical community. The average primary care physician in the U.S. today, knowing that perhaps only 10% of patient problems get reported to the FDA, would be startled to see these figures, especially the ones for cognitive dysfunction, neuropathy, rhabdomyolysis, depression, neuropathy and hepatitis. These are the people who write the prescriptions for statin use.

Fire guts home after smart meter installed

BC Hydro claims a Mission homeowner is ultimately liable for a fire that originated at the base of a smart meter one day after it was installed[U1] .---A report by the Mission fire department said the blaze, which destroyed Trish Regan's house in the 7900block of Burdock Street and leaped to the roof of a neighbouring home on June 15, originated at an insulating "lug" in the lower left corner of the meter base.[U2] ---The report says the terminal, which attached the base to the home, appeared cracked and "radiated [U3] heat to combust the wall at or near the meter base."---The base is the mounting plate for the meter, which measures how much electricity a home consumes during each utility-service billing period. Electricity must pass from the meter through the lugs to connect with the house wiring.--BC Hydro maintains the meter base is part of the house and thus any damage or faulty wiring is the customer's responsibility.[U4]  But Regan argues she had no idea she was responsible for the lug, noting smart meters are locked in place on the base and she has no access to them[U5] . Furthermore, Regan said the crack could have been caused by the BC Hydro installer, noting that she wasn't home when he arrived, but her daughter witnessed him trying three or four times to jam the meter onto the base.--"If there's an existing crack they're not supposed to put a meter on it," she said. "I've lived in my house for 20 years and the day after they put in a smart meter, it burns down."[U6] --The blaze destroyed Regan's home, three vehicles in her drive-way, and damaged her neighbour's house.--She is also increasingly frustrated by the Mission fire department, who initially told her the fire was caused by a crack on the base of the smart meter; it later revised its verdict to "electrical in nature.[U7] " Her insurance company filed a freedom of information request, which indicated the fire did originate at the base of the smart meter.--BC Hydro spokeswoman Cindy Verschoor said the Crown corporation has fixed about 1,000 homes with faulty or damaged wiring before it installed the smart meters, but residents should be ensuring they have electricians check the wiring regularly.--"We are fixing that for the customer free of charge as long as they give us permission," she said. "Those are cases of a fire risk. They are potential accidents waiting to happen.[U8]  --"We're always [doing work] on good faith that the customer has working, functional equipment to support our infrastructure."[U9]  The meter bases function like household electrical sockets and are built to withstand meters being plugged in and pulled out multiple times, Verschoor said.----If a resident is concerned about their meter base, they can call Hydro to come unlock the meter and remove it for about $100, she added.[U10]  Verschoor acknowledged the technician in Regan's case did not see the crack when installing the smart meter at her home, but wouldn't speculate as to what caused the damage, saying the issue is still under investigation. "It's possible there was a pre-existing condition that wasn't evident," Verschoor said. The smart meter itself was eliminated as the cause of the fire[U11] . The utility said of the 1.5 million smart meters it has installed to date, only 250 residents have complained of faulty meter bases.

Composition and health effects of phenolic compounds in hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) of different origins.

J Sci Food Agric. 2012 Jun;92(8):1578-90 -Authors: Yang B, Liu P

REVENGE AGAINST THE SMART METERS!!! HOW TO MAKE THEM DUMB!!!

Edison Electric recently installed a smart meter on my house, without my permission or knowledge. When I read about the dangers and invasion of privacy caused by these smart meters and discovered that I now had one, I was pissed. Too late to do anything about it? WRONG!!!---You see, the antenna for these meters is located inside the glass (or plastic) bulb. All I had to do was to cover the entire glass bulb with aluminum foil, making sure that the foil was grounded to the metal housing behind the bulb[U12] . This shields against any RF or Microwave transmissions, which both protects you from the radiation [U13] and also defeats the entire purpose of the smart meter, since they can't read it remotely. ---Then I sat back and waited for them to realize that they weren't getting any readings from my house. I checked the foil periodically to see if it was still there. Today it happened. They had to send some one out to rip the foil off of my meter to get a manual reading! I found the foil ripped off and laying on the ground. Naturally, I just re-applied the foil and now look forward to them having to send somebody out each and every month to remove the foil if they want to get a reading. If everyone would do this, it would defeat the entire smart meter program! They would have to re-think all of the money that they are spending to install these dangerous and privacy invading devices simply because people can render them dumb with 10 cents worth of aluminum foil! ---I say everybody should rise up and "FOIL" this disgusting smart meter program!--Hey, its my house, I can apply foil where ever I want!

[U1]Imagine someone coming to your house and modifying your homw without your permission and then there activity causes the destruction of your home---and then told Your Liable for there negligence!!!

[U2]Which the hydro company repair crew should have seen before putting on a dangerious piece of hardware!!

[U3]Appeared cracked??? Why was this not replaced when the initial installing was going on---does this not make you think that potentially this neglect was purposely orchestrated?? Makes me go hmm

[U4]Then what gives them the right to violate a persons property and then add something to it without consent and with out full disclosure to the potential risk of this technology or the fact that a new backing plate should be required and to suggest why!!

 [U5]So who has access??

[U6]It appears that there is some questionability to the safety of the technology and the qualification of the installer andd the neglect of the company not training there installers properly---would appear she could litigate and with a decent judge – if they exist--have a case

[U7]Stinks of cover up eh---technology no one wants except the gov’t and when they destroy the home they will not be responsible

[U8]Then the hydro companies need to apply proper precautions and insure the home owner---and pay the liabilities

[U9]And if they do not ---then should the hydro company replace everything not just new components with old ones??

[U10]Why would the need to remove it with the current tech---if you want to add the new tech then you replace everything not half ass

 [U11]Why  is that!!?

[U12]Make sure you add copper with it as well to cover both ends of the frequency range –high and Low spectrum

[U13]This will not protect you from the radiation---it will protect you from being transmitted or pulsed minimizing the exposure

Onion juice triples testosterone levels

Think of a dirt-cheap vegetable you can buy at every greengrocers and supermarket. Put it in a juicer, give the juice to rats for three weeks, and watch their testosterone level rise by 314 percent. According to research done at Tabriz University in Iran, fresh onion juice raises testosterone levels as much as substances like nolvadex or clomid. ---

In Iran many men who have fertility problems can’t afford to buy medicine. That’s why Iranian researchers are looking for alternatives to medicines like NAC and selenium. Studies show that antioxidants can increase production of testosterone and sperm in the testes. Studies have also shown that onions contain strong antioxidants. So the researchers put two and two together and bought ordinary onions – Latin name Allium cepa – on the market. They peeled the onions and put them in a domestic juicer made by Tefal. The juice they got is what they used in their trials.

Their subjects were a group of 8-week-old male rats. Of these, 10 were given ordinary food for 20 days. [Control] Ten other rats got 0.5 g per kg bodyweight of onion  juice,[U1]  which was pumped into their stomachs using a tube. Another 10 rats were given the same treatment, but got 1 g/kg bodyweight/day -The table below shows that after 20 days the onion juice had improved the sperm quality and increased the concentration of LH, FSH and testosterone in the rats’ blood -- The table below shows that after 20 days the onion juice had improved the sperm quality and increased the concentration of LH, FSH and --testosterone in the rats’ blood

Malondialdehyde is a mutagenic substance that is produced when free radicals damage the unsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes. The reduction in malondialdehyde concentrations that the researchers found indicates how the onion juice increases testosterone production: antioxidants in onion juice neutralise free radicals in the testes. The researchers suspect that the antioxidants in question are probably selenium compounds found in onions, and phenols such as quercetin and isorhamnetin [structural formulae shown above]. Isorhamnetin is also made in the body when enzymes convert quercetine with the help of S-adenosylmethionine. --The Iranian findings are not completely new. As long ago as 1967 an Egyptian researcher discovered that the testes of lab animals fed raw onion juice increase in size. At the moment there are quite a few animal studies which report that high doses of polyphenols like quercetin have a positive effect on the testes. But the effect of these is not as big as that of plain onion juice.

Pellagra--

Pellagra is clinically manifested by the 4 D' s: photosensitive dermatitis, diarrhea, dementia, and death. The full tetrad of symptoms is usually not well developed in infants and children. This vitamin deficiency responds to treatment with nicotinic acid.[1] ---Pellagra is observed in malnourished individuals and as a complication of isoniazid therapy; however, the diagnosis is often overlooked or delayed, occasionally with life-threatening consequences. Isoniazid-induced pellagra may occur despite pyridoxine supplementation. ---Pellagra first was recognized in the United States in 1902, and it became an epidemic in the American South.[2] Poverty and corn consumption were the most frequently observed risk factors. The public became pellagraphobic, and patients were shunned and ostracized. Hungarian born Dr Joseph Goldberger of the United States Public Health Service eventually solved the problem. He was able to prevent and induce pellagra by using dietary modification.[1] --Pellagra is defined by the systemic disease resulting from niacin deficiency, and it is characterized by diarrhea, dermatitis, dementia, and death, which usually appear in this order. GI tract symptoms always precede dermatitis, or, according to Rille, "Pellagra begins in the stomach".[3] ---Gasper Casal first described pellagra in 1762 in Oviedo, Asturias. Casal noted the malady among poor peasants of Asturias and termed it mal de la rose because all affected patients had the typical reddish and glossy rash on the dorsum of the hands and feet. Skin lesions on the neck are designated as the Casal necklace. Casal had observed that patients with pellagra were all poor, subsisted mainly on maize[U2] , and rarely ate fresh meat.[U3]  Before Casal, the skin changes were termed Hiob disease; stigmata of Saint Francis of Assisi; or, in Italy, scorbuto alpino. François Thiery published the first description of pellagra in 1755. Francesco Frapolli called the disease vulgo pelagrain and first used the term pellagra in 1771. ---In Italian vernacular, pellagra means "skin that is rough" and refers to the thickened, rough skin of persons with pellagra. In Italian, pelle means skin, and agra means sour. Pellagra remained endemic among maize-eating peasants of southern Europe for almost 2 centuries before it was recognized in the United States. In 1914, scientists suggested that pellagra was caused by a deficiency of some nutrient in the diet and that the disorder appeared to be related to black tongue (a condition analogous to pellagra) in dogs. In 1937, Conrad Elvehjem discovered that nicotinic acid cured black tongue[U4] .[4] ---In the United States, pellagra was first reported in 1902. In Europe, the highest incidence was in the Mediterranean area. The first cases were reported in France in 1818, in Egypt in 1847, in England in 1866, and in Bulgaria in 1907. Over the following 2 decades, pellagra occurred in epidemic proportions in the American South. Poverty and the consumption of corn were the most frequently observed risk factors. The medical community implicated the consumption of spoiled maize as the cause of pellagra, which occurred among those who were less affluent; this suggestion caused economic repercussions for agriculturists.

Goldberger eventually solved the secret of the malady, which was a faulty diet. Goldberger was able to prevent and induce pellagra with dietary modifications, a landmark event in the annals of medicine, nutrition, and epidemiology. The reference range for serum nicotinic acid levels is 740-790 g; this level is decreased in patients with pellagra. --HIV infection induces a pellagralike state; plasma tryptophan levels are decreased in patients with HIV infection. High-dose nicotinamide treatment may successfully reverse this HIV-induced metabolic abnormality. Niacin is proposed to be a secondary preventive factor of AIDS in patients with HIV infection.[5, 6, 7]

Nicotinamide helps to Treat Fungal Infections

Niacin (also known as vitamin B3, nicotinamide and vitamin PP)
Infections by the yeast Candida albicans represent a significant public health problem and a common complication in immunodeficient individuals such as AIDS patients, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and recipients of organ transplants. While some treatments are available, their efficacy can be compromised by the emergence of drug-resistant strains.
A team of scientists from the Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer (IRIC) of the University of Montreal have identified vitamin B3 as a potential antifungal treatment. --
The current study shows that a C. albicans enzyme, known as Hst3, is essential to the growth and survival of the yeast. Researchers found that genetic or pharmacological inhibition of Hst3 with nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B3, strongly reduced C. albicans virulence in a mouse model. Both normal and drug-resistant strains of C. albicans were susceptible to nicotinamide. In addition, nicotinamide prevented the growth of other pathogenic Candida species and Aspergillus fumigatus (another human pathogen), thus demonstrating the broad antifungal properties of nicotinamide.

Germany warns citizens to avoid using Wi-Fi

Environment Ministry's verdict on the health risks from wireless technology puts the British government to shame.

Sunday, 9 September 2007

People should avoid using Wi-Fi wherever possible because of the risks it may pose to health, the German government has said.--Its surprise ruling – the most damning made by any government on the fast-growing technology – will shake the industry and British ministers, and vindicates the questions that The Independent on Sunday has been raising over the past four months.-And Germany's official radiation protection body also advises its citizens to use landlines instead of mobile phones, and warns of "electrosmog" from a wide range of other everyday products, from baby monitors to electric blankets.---The German government's ruling – which contrasts sharply with the unquestioning promotion of the technology by British officials – was made in response to a series of questions by Green members of the Bundestag, Germany's parliament.---The Environment Ministry recommended that people should keep their exposure to radiation from Wi-Fi "as low as possible" by choosing "conventional wired connections". It added that it is "actively informing people about possibilities for reducing personal exposure". ---Its actions will provide vital support for Sir William Stewart, Britain's official health protection watchdog, who has produced two reports calling for caution in using mobile phones and who has also called for a review of the use of Wi-Fi in schools. His warnings have so far been ignored by ministers and even played down by the Health Protection Agency, which he chairs.---By contrast the agency's German equivalent – the Federal Office for Radiation Protection – is leading the calls for caution.---Florian Emrich, for the office, says Wi-Fi should be avoided "because people receive exposures from many sources and because it is a new technology and all the research into its health effects has not yet been carried out".

Front yard Drummondville garden deemed illegal

The Record

A Drummondville couple has begun what could be part of a grueling battle with the municipality over a vegetable garden they have built in front of their house in the Saint-Charles sector of the city. -Because the back yard of their house on Richelieu Street doesn’t get enough sunlight for the purpose, Michel Beauchamp and Josée Landry decided to put a garden in their front yard after having received verbal authorization from the town’s Environmental services inspector. The couple say they subsequently invested $2,500 to install the garden. A few weeks later, however, they received a warning from the city informing them that the garden did not conform to municipal regulations. Because the garden extends to the border of their property, part of it rests on land reserved by the municipality. In addition, according to the city, the garden surpasses the 30 per cent maximum allowed for this kind of activity by municipal by-laws. [U5] According to the couple, the municipal inspector was informed of this and warned only that the couple should be aware that the garden could be in the way of winter snow disposal. Now, when harvesting is about to begin, the couple has been given a period of seven days to uproot all the plants in order to conform to the municipal regulationa time span completely inadequate for the work required.---The couple has no intention of taking this lying down, however, and has begun an online petition asking the city to amend its regulations with a view to encouraging the practice rather than forbidding it. Beauchamp claims to have lost 75 pounds since he began gardening and eating better and believes that authorities should recognize vegetable gardens as perhaps the most beneficial use of such spaces.--Municipal Director-General Claude Proulx. for his part, doesn’t know the details of any conversations between the couple and the municipal inspector, but insists that regardless, the municipal regulations are not being followed. “We don’t have a problem with front yard gardens,” he says, “but the rules regarding municipal right and the maximum surface allowed for this purpose have to be obeyed.” [U6] Those residents of the sector desiring to grow a garden – even according to the current rules – have only a few months to do so as the city is planning to consolidate zonage regulations across the entire municipality[U7] . Those residents, like Beauchamp and Landry, who begin their project prior to the rule change will benefit from a ‘grandfather clause’ exempting them from new restrictions, but not the old ones. The new regulations will confine gardens to land behind or beside the main building of a residential property.According to the D-G, the standardization of regulations is taking place primarily for aesthetic reasons. [U8] “It’s a question of cohesion of urban territory,” Proulx explained, “If we allow front yard gardens we’ll end up with a cornfield in one place, strawberries in another and raspberries at another. That doesn’t make it easier to attract new residents to the city. Proulx insists that the municipality has no intention of inhibiting the use of gardens, as long as they are confined to the designated areas of a property. The idea is to find some equilibrium between urban landscapes and gardens, he says.

Paying even for the utility bills?? Then the city needs to administer things like---reducing taxes---and keeping themselves occupied like the infrastructure –such as sewage and waste—not harassing people because they have a garden---then next election should have a platform on it over this issue and the freedom to grow all you want to and grass options are optional---time to remove ASSHOLES from a system that do not comply to the people wishes or rights in regard to there own property

GMO—and WHY you do not want to consume due to lack of Labeling

**************************************************************************

Step to weave a mesh to block out frequencies

  1. What you will need is a spool of copper wire and a roll of aluminum mesh or chicken coup
  2. measure out the length and width of the mesh you wish to employ as a barrier
  3. you can either measure off and mark where you want to weave the copper or just eyeball the width or use your thumb as a index or standard as far as how wide you wish to space your wire
  4. begin to weave your copper like a seamster (ess) and go in and out or over and under into the mesh to you eventually form a criss cross or checker board looking ,mesh
  5. add 3-6 volt batter positive being to your head and negative toward the lower end
  6. have used up to 9 & 18 volt---it can be over whelming so just use the 3 volt or 6
  7. lay the mesh on the bed –cover it over with a towel and proceed to sleep on it
  8. this may in fact make  your system recover more effectively as welll as increase sleep
  9. if you wish to hang on window attach a ground to it and this will block off a lot of the smart meter and reduce the impact of HAARP

Shielding Design Guide--- Electromagnetic shielding

Electromagnetic shielding is the practice of reducing the electromagnetic field in a space by blocking the field with barriers made of conductive or magnetic materials. Shielding is typically applied to enclosures to isolate electrical devices from the 'outside world', and to cables to isolate wires from the environment through which the cable runs. Electromagnetic shielding that blocks radio frequency electromagnetic radiation is also known as RF shielding.

The shielding can reduce the coupling of radio waves, electromagnetic fields and electrostatic fields. A conductive enclosure used to block electrostatic fields is also known as a Faraday cage. The amount of reduction depends very much upon the material used, its thickness, the size of the shielded volume and the frequency of the fields of interest and the size, shape and orientation of apertures in a shield to an incident electromagnetic field.---- Electromagnetic shielding is the practice of reducing the electromagnetic field in a space by blocking the field with barriers made of conductive or magnetic materials. The shielding can reduce the coupling of radio waves, electromagnetic fields and electrostatic fields. A conductive enclosure used to block electrostatic fields is also known as a Faraday cage. The amount of reduction depends very much upon the material used, its thickness, the size of the shielded volume and the frequency of the fields of interest and the size, shape and orientation of apertures in a shield to an incident electromagnetic field.

Materials used---Typical materials used for electromagnetic shielding include sheet metal, metal screen, and metal foam. Any holes in the shield or mesh must be significantly smaller than the wavelength of the radiation that is being kept out, or the enclosure will not effectively approximate an unbroken conducting surface.

Another Method----Another commonly used shielding method, especially with electronic goods housed in plastic enclosures, is to coat the inside of the enclosure with a metallic ink or similar material. The ink consists of a carrier material loaded with a suitable metal, typically copper or nickel, in the form of very small particulates. It is sprayed on to the enclosure and, once dry, produces a continuous conductive layer of metal, which can be electrically connected to the chassis ground of the equipment, thus providing effective shielding.

Example applications

Cross-section through a coaxial cable showing shielding and other layers

One example is a shielded cable, which has electromagnetic shielding in the form of a wire mesh surrounding an inner core conductor. The shielding impedes the escape of any signal from the core conductor, and also signals from being added to the core conductor. Some cables have two separate coaxial screens, one connected at both ends, the other at one end only, to maximize shielding of both electromagnetic and electrostatic fields.

The door of a microwave oven has a screen built into the window. From the perspective of microwaves (with wavelengths of 12 cm) this screen finishes a Faraday cage formed by the oven's metal housing. Visible light, with wavelengths ranging between 400 nm and 700 nm, passes easily between the wires.

RF shielding is also used to prevent access to data stored on RFID chips embedded in various devices, such as biometric passports.

NATO specifies electromagnetic shielding for computers and keyboards to prevent passive monitoring of keyboard emissions that would allow passwords to be captured; consumer keyboards do not offer this protection primarily because of the prohibitive cost]

RF shielding is also used to protect medical and laboratory equipment to provide protection against interfering signals, including AM, FM, TV, emergency services, dispatch, pagers, ESMR, cellular, and PCS. It can also be used to protect the equipment at the AM, FM or TV broadcast facilities.

How electromagnetic shielding works---Electromagnetic radiation consists of coupled electric and magnetic fields. The electric field produces forces on the charge carriers (i.e., electrons) within the conductor. As soon as an electric field is applied to the surface of an ideal conductor, it induces a current that causes displacement of charge inside the conductor that cancels the applied field inside, at which point the current stops.---Similarly, varying magnetic fields generate eddy currents that act to cancel the applied magnetic field. (The conductor does not respond to static magnetic fields unless the conductor is moving relative to the magnetic field.) The result is that electromagnetic radiation is reflected from the surface of the conductor: internal fields stay inside, and external fields stay outside.

ØSeveral factors serve to limit the shielding capability of real RF shields. One is that, due to the electrical resistance of the conductor, the excited field does not completely cancel the incident field. Also, most conductors exhibit a ferromagnetic response to low-frequency magnetic fields, so that such fields are not fully attenuated by the conductor. Any holes in the shield force current to flow around them, so that fields passing through the holes do not excite opposing electromagnetic fields. These effects reduce the field-reflecting capability of the shield.---In the case of high-frequency electromagnetic radiation, the above-mentioned adjustments take a non-negligible amount of time. But then the radiation energy, as far as it is not reflected, is absorbed by the skin (unless it is extremely thin), so in this case there is no electromagnetic field inside either. This is called the skin effect. A measure for the depth to which radiation can penetrate the shield is the so-called skin depth.

Magnetic shielding---

Equipment sometimes requires isolation from external magnetic fields. For static or slowly varying magnetic fields (below about 100 kHz) the Faraday shielding described above is ineffective. In these cases shields made of high magnetic permeability metal alloys can be used, such as sheets of Permalloy and Mu-Metal[2], or with nanocrystalline grain structure ferromagnetic metal coatings.[3] These materials don't block the magnetic field, as with electric shielding, but rather draw the field into themselves, providing a path for the magnetic field lines around the shielded volume. The best shape for magnetic shields is thus a closed container surrounding the shielded volume. The effectiveness of this type of shielding depends on the material's permeability, which generally drops off at both very low magnetic field strengths and at high field strengths where the material becomes saturated. So to achieve low residual fields, magnetic shields often consist of several enclosures one inside the other, each of which successively reduces the field inside it.  Because of the above limitations of passive shielding, an alternative used with static or low-frequency fields is active shielding; using a field created by electromagnets to cancel out the ambient field within a volume.[4] Solenoids and Helmholtz coils are types of coils that can be used for this purpose.---Additionally, superconducting materials can expel magnetic fields via the Meissner effect.

**************************************************************************

Metal  Components that can be used-.--The type of metal that you specify may have an impact on a shield's performance. In general, shielding against frequencies of 15 MHz or lower is a bulk material effect, and can best be served by employing a ferromagnetic metal such as steel. For greater attenuation at these lower frequencies, metals with high permeabilities and low core losses such as Permalloy 80® or MuMetal® are good candidates.----If the frequencies you are shielding against are greater than 15 MHz, shielding becomes less of a bulk material effect and more of a skin (conductivity) affect. At frequencies (and harmonics) of 900 MHz and above, almost any metal, including brass, nickel silver, copper and steel, shields similarly assuming a thickness of .002" (.05mm) or greater.----Consider specifying a metal alloy called nickel silver (55% copper; 27% zinc; 18% nickel; and not a speck of silver) for shields that will be hand soldered or re-flow soldered with flux---

GMO—and WHY you do not want to consume due to lack of Labeling

“The policy set for GE alfalfa will most likely guide policies for other GE crops as well. True coexistence is a must.”   -  Whole Foods Market, Jan. 21, 2011

In the wake of a 12-year battle to keep Monsanto’s Genetically Engineered (GE) crops from contaminating the nation’s 25,000 organic farms and ranches, America’s organic consumers and producers are facing betrayal. A self-appointed cabal of the Organic Elite, spearheaded by Whole Foods Market, Organic Valley, and Stonyfield Farm, has decided it’s time to surrender to Monsanto. Top executives from these companies have publicly admitted that they no longer oppose the mass commercialization of GE crops, such as Monsanto’s controversial Roundup Ready alfalfa, and are prepared to sit down and cut a deal for “coexistence” [U1] with Monsanto and USDA biotech cheerleader Tom Vilsack.---In a cleverly worded, but profoundly misleading email sent to its customers last week, Whole Foods Market, while proclaiming their support for organics and “seed purity,” gave the green light to USDA bureaucrats to approve the “conditional deregulation” of Monsanto’s genetically engineered, herbicide-resistant alfalfaBeyond the regulatory euphemism of “conditional deregulation,” this means that WFM and their colleagues are willing to go along with the massive planting of a chemical and energy-intensive GE perennial crop, alfalfa; guaranteed to spread its mutant genes and seeds across the nation; guaranteed to contaminate the alfalfa fed to organic animals; guaranteed to lead to massive poisoning of farm workers and destruction of the essential soil food web by the toxic herbicide, Roundup; and guaranteed to produce Roundup-resistant superweeds that will require even more deadly herbicides such as 2,4 D to be sprayed on millions of acres of alfalfa across the U.S.----------In exchange for allowing Monsanto’s premeditated pollution of the alfalfa gene pool, WFM wants “compensation.” In exchange for a new assault on farmworkers and rural communities (a recent large-scale Swedish study found that spraying Roundup doubles farm workers’ and rural residents’ risk of getting cancer), [U2] WFM expects the pro-biotech USDA to begin to regulate rather than cheerlead for Monsanto. In payment for a new broad spectrum attack on the soil’s crucial ability to provide nutrition for food crops and to sequester dangerous greenhouse gases (recent studies show that Roundup devastates essential soil microorganisms that provide plant nutrition and sequester climate-destabilizing greenhouse gases), [U3] WFM wants the Biotech Bully of St. Louis to agree to pay “compensation” (i.e. hush money) to farmers “for any losses related to the contamination of his crop.”------------In its email of Jan. 21, 2011 WFM calls for “public oversight by the USDA rather than reliance on the biotechnology industry,” even though WFM knows full well that federal regulations on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) do not require pre-market safety testing, nor labeling;[U4]  and that even federal judges have repeatedly ruled that so-called government “oversight” of Frankencrops such as Monsanto’s sugar beets and alfalfa is basically a farce. At the end of its email, WFM admits that its surrender to Monsanto is permanent: “The policy set for GE alfalfa will most likely guide policies for other GE crops as well  True coexistence is a must.”[U5]

Why Is Organic Inc. Surrendering?---According to informed sources, the CEOs of WFM and Stonyfield are personal friends of former Iowa governor, now USDA Secretary, Tom Vilsack, and in fact made financial contributions to Vilsack’s previous electoral campaigns. Vilsack was hailed as “Governor of the Year” in 2001 by the Biotechnology Industry Organization, and traveled in a Monsanto corporate jet on the campaign trail.[U6]  Perhaps even more fundamental to Organic Inc.’s abject surrender is the fact that the organic elite has become more and more isolated from the concerns and passions of organic consumers and locavores.--The Organic Inc. CEOs are tired of activist pressure, boycotts, and petitions. Several of them have told me this to my face. They apparently believe that the battle against GMOs has been lost, and that it’s time to reach for the consolation prize.  The consolation prize they seek is a so-called “coexistence” between the biotech Behemoth and the organic community that will lull the public to sleep and greenwash the unpleasant fact that Monsanto’s unlabeled and unregulated genetically engineered crops are now spreading their toxic genes on 1/3 of U.S. (and 1/10 of global) crop land. ----WFM and most of the largest organic companies have deliberately separated themselves from anti-GMO efforts and cut off all funding to campaigns working to label or ban GMOs. The so-called Non-GMO Project, funded by Whole Foods and giant wholesaler United Natural Foods (UNFI) is basically a greenwashing effort (although the 100% organic companies involved in this project seem to be operating in good faith) to show that certified organic foods are basically free from GMOs (we already know this since GMOs are banned in organic production), while failing to focus on so-called “natural” foods, which constitute most of WFM and UNFI’s sales and are routinely contaminated with GMOs.[U7] ---From their “business as usual” perspective, successful lawsuits against GMOs filed by public interest groups such as the Center for Food Safety; or noisy attacks on Monsanto by groups like the Organic Consumers Association, create bad publicity, rattle their big customers such as Wal-Mart, Target, Kroger, Costco, Supervalu, Publix and Safeway; and remind consumers that organic crops and foods such as corn, soybeans, and canola are slowly but surely becoming contaminated by Monsanto’s GMOs.-Whole Foods’ Dirty Little Secret: Most of the So-Called “Natural” Processed Foods and Animal Products They Sell Are Contaminated with GMOs[U8] ---The main reason, however, why Whole Foods is pleading for coexistence with Monsanto, Dow, Bayer, Syngenta, BASF and the rest of the biotech bullies, is that they desperately want the controversy surrounding genetically engineered foods and crops to go away. Why? Because they know, just as we do, that 2/3 of WFM’s $9 billion annual sales is derived from so-called “natural” processed foods and animal products that are contaminated with GMOs. [U9] We and our allies have tested their so-called “natural” products (no doubt WFM’s lab has too) containing non-organic corn and soy, and guess what: they’re all contaminated with GMOs, in contrast to their certified organic products, which are basically free of GMOs, or else contain barely detectable trace amounts.---Approximately 2/3 of the products sold by Whole Foods Market and their main distributor, United Natural Foods (UNFI) are not certified organic, but rather are conventional (chemical-intensive and GMO-tainted) foods and products disguised as “natural.”---Unprecedented wholesale and retail control of the organic marketplace by UNFI and Whole Foods, employing a business model of selling twice as much so-called “natural” food as certified organic food, coupled with the takeover of many organic companies by multinational food corporations such as Dean Foods, threatens the growth of the organic movement[U10] .  ---Covering Up GMO Contamination: Perpetrating “Natural” Fraud----Many well-meaning consumers are confused about the difference between conventional products marketed as “natural,” and those nutritionally/ environmentally superior and climate-friendly products that are “certified organic.”---Retail stores like WFM and wholesale distributors like UNFI have failed to educate their customers about the qualitative difference between natural and certified organic, conveniently glossing over the fact that nearly all of the processed “natural” foods and products they sell contain GMOs, or else come from a “natural” supply chain where animals are force-fed GMO grains in factory farms or Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs). [U11] A troubling trend in organics today is the calculated shift on the part of certain large formerly organic brands from certified organic ingredients and products to so-called “natural” ingredients. With the exception of the “grass-fed and grass-finished” meat sector, most “natural” meat, dairy, and eggs are coming from animals reared on GMO grains and drugs, and confined, entirely, or for a good portion of their lives, in CAFOs.--Whole Foods and UNFI are maximizing their profits by selling quasi-natural products at premium organic prices[U12] . Organic consumers are increasingly left without certified organic choices while genuine organic farmers and ranchers continue to lose market share to “natural” imposters. It’s no wonder that less than 1% of American farmland is certified organic, while well-intentioned but misled consumers have boosted organic and “natural” purchases to $80 billion annually-approximately 12% of all grocery store sales.--The Solution: Truth-in-Labeling Will Enable Consumers to Drive So-Called “Natural” GMO and CAFO-Tainted Foods Off the Market---There can be no such thing as “coexistence” with a reckless industry that undermines public health, destroys biodiversity, damages the environment, tortures and poisons animals, destabilizes the climate, and economically devastates the world’s 1.5 billion seed-saving small farmers.----There is no such thing as coexistence between GMOs and organics in the European Union. Why? Because in the EU there are almost no GMO crops under cultivation, nor GM consumer food products on supermarket shelves. And why is this? Because under EU law, all foods containing GMOs or GMO ingredients must be labeled. Consumers have the freedom to choose or not to choose GMOs; while farmers, food processors, and retailers have (at least legally) the right to lace foods with GMOs, as long as they are safety-tested and labeled.[U13] ---Of course the EU food industry understands that consumers, for the most part, do not want to purchase or consume GE foods. European farmers and food companies, even junk food purveyors like McDonald’s and Wal-Mart, understand quite well the concept expressed by a Monsanto executive when GMOs first came on the market: “If you put a label on genetically engineered food you might as well put a skull and crossbones on it.”[U14] ----The biotech industry and Organic Inc. are supremely conscious of the fact that North American consumers, like their European counterparts, are wary and suspicious of GMO foods. Even without a PhD, consumers understand you don’t want your food safety or environmental sustainability decisions to be made by out-of-control chemical companies like Monsanto, Dow, or Dupont – the same people who brought you toxic pesticides, Agent Orange, PCBs, and now global warming.---Industry leaders are acutely aware of the fact that every single industry or government poll over the last 16 years has shown that 85-95% of American consumers want mandatory labels on GMO foods. Why? So that we can avoid buying them. GMO foods have absolutely no benefits for consumers or the environment, only hazards. This is why Monsanto and their friends in the Bush, Clinton, and Obama administrations have prevented consumer GMO truth-in-labeling laws from getting a public discussion in Congress.---Although Congressman Dennis Kucinich (Democrat, Ohio) recently introduced a bill in Congress calling for mandatory labeling and safety testing for GMOs, don’t hold your breath for Congress to take a stand for truth-in-labeling and consumers’ right to know what’s in their food. Especially since the 2010 Supreme Court decision in the so-called Citizens United case gave big corporations and billionaires the right to spend unlimited amounts of money (and remain anonymous, as they do so) to buy media coverage and elections, our chances of passing federal GMO labeling laws against the wishes of Monsanto and Food Inc. are all but non-existent.---Perfectly dramatizing the “Revolving Door” between Monsanto and the Federal Government, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, formerly chief counsel for Monsanto, delivered one of the decisive votes in the Citizens United case, in effect giving Monsanto and other biotech bullies the right to buy the votes it needs in the U.S. Congress.---With big money controlling Congress and the media, we have little choice but to shift our focus and go local. We’ve got to concentrate our forces where our leverage and power lie, in the marketplace, at the retail level; pressuring retail food stores to voluntarily label their products; while on the legislative front we must organize a broad coalition to pass mandatory GMO (and CAFO) labeling laws, at the city, county, and state levels.----The Organic Consumers Association, joined by our consumer, farmer, environmental, and labor allies, has just launched a nationwide Truth-in-Labeling campaign to stop Monsanto and the Biotech Bullies from force-feeding unlabeled GMOs to animals and humans.----Utilizing scientific data, legal precedent, and consumer power the OCA and our local coalitions will educate and mobilize at the grassroots level to pressure giant supermarket chains (Wal-Mart, Kroger, Costco, Safeway, Supervalu, and Publix) and natural food retailers such as Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s to voluntarily implement “truth-in-labeling” practices for GMOs and CAFO products; while simultaneously organizing a critical mass to pass mandatory local and state truth-in-labeling ordinances – similar to labeling laws already in effect for country of origin, irradiated food, allergens, and carcinogens.---If local and state government bodies refuse to take action, wherever possible we must attempt to gather sufficient petition signatures and place these truth-in-labeling initiatives directly on the ballot in 2011 or 2012.  If you’re interested in helping organize or coordinate a Millions Against Monsanto and Factory Farms

Egg yolks almost as dangerous as smoking, researcher says

A researcher at Western University in London said he's found more evidence pointing to the harmful effects of egg yolks.[U1] --He claims the cholesterol found in the yolk is almost as dangerous as smoking.--Dr. David Spence says Canadians are being duped by what he calls "propaganda" from the egg industry[U2] .--His most recent study of more than 1,200 people found egg consumption accelerates atherosclerosis or plaque build up on arteries.--He said the culprit is the cholesterol found in the yolk, which is 237 mgs in a jumbo egg[U3] .---"It's more than the cholesterol in a Hardee's monster thick burger which is two-thirds of a pound of beef, three slices of cheese and four slices of bacon," said Spence.--Karen Harvey is the nutrition officer with Egg Farmers of Canada and a registered dietitian. She stands by the safety of eating egg yolks on a daily basis.--"We have decades of clinical research demonstrating no link between egg consumption and an increased risk of heart disease," said Harvey.[U4] --Spence says, he's looked at that research and accuses the egg industry of being selective about what it shares with the public.--"They're just like the tobacco industry," he said.--Canada's food guide lists two eggs as an alternative serving to meat.--Spence said that would be well over anyone's recommended daily intake of cholesterol.

Nutrition Content

The vitamin and mineral content is outrageous! For 100 grams of CONVENTIONAL eggs (about 2 large) Nutrition Data says

  • 10% Vitamin A
  • 28% Riboflavin
  • 12% Folate
  • 22% Vitamin B12
  • 14% Pantothenic Acid
  • 10% Iron
  • 19% Phosphorus
  • 45% Selenium

It also contains 5-10% of Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin B6, Calcium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper.

Keep in mind…. this is for CONVENTIONAL eggs. If you buy pastured or organic eggs, which are still ridiculously cheap, then the nutrition content improves greatly including up to six times the amount of Vitamin E (from what I remember reading). The omega 6 to omega 3 ratio goes down from as low as 1.5 to 1 as well.

Eggs are a rich source of the B vitamin choline. In addition to helping your body produce new cell membranes and healthy nerves, choline can reduce chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation occurs when your body's natural healing process goes haywire. Instead of healing, inflammation wreaks havoc on your body --increasing the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Eating choline-rich eggs can reduce chronic inflammation by more than 20 percent, according to an article published in the February 2008 edition of the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition."

CMacular degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. Eggs are bursting with a pair of nutrients -- lutein and zeaxanthin -- which protect your eyes from damage caused by free radicals and sunlight exposure. In a study conducted by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and published in the October 2006 issue of the "Journal of Nutrition," subjects who consumed just one egg per day significantly boosted the levels of lutein and zeaxanthin in their blood.

CCResults: Daily nutrient intake of egg consumers (EC) was significantly greater than that of nonconsumers (NC) for all nutrients studied (except dietary fiber and vitamin B6). Eggs contributed < 10% of daily intake of energy and

vitamin B6, 10% to 20% of folate and total, saturated and polyunsaturated fat, and 20% to 30% of vitamins A, E and B12 in EC. Compared to EC, NC had higher rates of inadequate intake (defined by Estimated Average Requirements (EAR) or < 70% Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA)) for vitamin B12 (10% vs. 21%), vitamin A (16% vs. 21%), vitamin E (14% vs. 22%) and vitamin C (15% vs. 20%). After adjusting for demographic (age, gender and ethnicity) and lifestyle variables (smoking and physical activity), dietary cholesterol was not related to serum cholesterol concentration. People who reported eating ≥ 4 eggs/wk had a significantly lower mean serum cholesterol concentration than those who reported eating ≤ 1 egg/wk (193 mg/dL vs. 197 mg/dL, p < 0.01). More frequent egg consumption was negatively associated with serum cholesterol concentration (β=−6.45, p < 0.01).

Conclusions: In this cross-sectional and population-based study, egg consumption made important nutritional contributions to the American diet and was not associated with high serum cholesterol concentrations.

As a whole food, eggs are an inexpensive and low calorie source of nutrients such as folate, riboflavin, selenium, choline and vitamins B-12 and A. Eggs are also one of the few exogenous sources of vitamins K and D. Furthermore, eggs are a source of high quality protein, and the lipid matrix of the yolk serves to enhance the bioavailability of nutrients such as lutein and zeaxanthin.

For years, eggs have been held up as a powerhouse of nutrition. This reputation has been due to eggs’ exceptional nutrition profile as a nutrient-dense food containing high quality protein and a substantial amount of many essential vitamins and minerals. Unfortunately their position on the nutrition pedestal fell with the discovery that they are also a source of dietary cholesterol. The most recent scientific research not only returns eggs to their golden past, but elevates their position as a functional food and ultimately provides more reasons than ever to consume eggs. ---In February 2000, scientists convened at a conference in Amelia Island, Florida, to discuss the latest research about the role of eggs in disease prevention and the promotion of health. This supplement of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition (JACN) presents compelling scientific evidence about eggs’ functional food attributes, reaffirms that eggs have a minimal effect on blood cholesterol levels and presents new research on the contribution of eggs to the American diet. For health professionals, this issue provides a new scientifically based viewpoint on eggs and their role in health and nutrition, a viewpoint that should be imparted to all consumers in an effort to ensure optimal health and well-being.

Egg Nutrition----It is well known that eggs constitute a rich array of nutrients. They long have been promoted for their high quality protein. Egg also provide a high nutrient density in proportion to their energy content. As shown in Table 1 eggs contribute only 1.3% of the total calories in the American diet but substantial amounts of high quality protein, folate and riboflavin as well as a number of other nutrients in excess of its caloric contributions. Eggs are a good source (10 to 19 percent of the Daily Value [DV]) of six nutrients and an excellent source (20+% of the DV) of five nutrients (Table 2). Few foods are as nutrient-dense, and eggs are among the few food sources of vitamins D and K.

RDA of Major Nutrients from Two Large Eggs

The nutrient density of eggs makes them a valuable contributor to the overall nutritional balance of the diet  and, as an economical source of high quality protein, an important component in the diets of the elderly, low-income families, growing children and people limiting calories for weight loss purposes. In this issue, Won O. Song and Jean M. Kerver highlight that among egg consumers, eggs contributed 10% to 20% of dietary folate and 20% to 30% of vitamins A, E and B-12. The fact that non-consumers of eggs were more likely to fall short of the EAR or the RDA for vitamins A, E and B-12 demonstrates the important role eggs can play in ensuring nutrient adequacy. ---As a high protein food, eggs appear in a food group with beef, poultry, fish, legumes and other animal and vegetable protein sources on the Food Guide Pyramid. They are well recognized among consumers as a top source of protein[U5] . Certain groups of consumers, namely athletes, may place great importance on protein. Yet a dichotomy exists as to the proper balance of protein and carbohydrates among athletes. In this supplement, Peter W. R. Lemon discusses the need to educate athletes about dietary protein, given that their protein needs are greater than those of their inactive peers. This discussion helps put dietary protein in perspective for various groups of consumers. -----------More recently, research has shown that eggs supply significant amounts of carotenoids that may play a role in disease prevention. Jeffrey Blumberg and colleagues have demonstrated that eggs are a source of highly bioavailable forms of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin. These antioxidant-like compounds have been shown to help in the prevention of macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness in the elderly, and have been associated with lower risk of cataract extraction. Consumers may not yet be aware that egg yolks are rich in highly bioavailable forms of both these antioxidants, nor that these antioxidants convey potential health benefits. ---Another less familiar nutrient in eggs is choline, a compound which is critical for brain and memory developmentin utero and early in life. Choline was mentioned in earlier editions of the RDAs [2], but only recently were formal dietary recommendations made [3]. Because research on choline is somewhat limited, and study findings have not yet caught the attention of journalists and reporters, consumers know little about choline or its food sources, including eggs. Steven H. Zeisel points out the potential, but not yet studied, importance of choline to pregnant women to ensure normal development of the fetal brain. Eggs could be recommended to pregnant women as a rich source of choline.

The Changing Heart Disease Message

Information about cholesterol and heart disease began being publicized in the 1960s, with the first observations linking diet to heart disease. In the early 1970s, the American Heart Association published its first recommendations on diet. Among them was a suggested limitation on dietary cholesterol to less than 300 mg/day. High cholesterol foods like eggs and shellfish were highlighted as foods to minimize in the diet. --------------Consumers have been and continue to be concerned about cholesterol in foods, in good measure a result of 40 years of communication regarding high cholesterol foods, blood cholesterol levels and heart disease. What consumers may not realize is how little effect changes in dietary cholesterol intake have on blood levels. A paper by Donald J. McNamara summarizes 166 cholesterol feeding studies conducted over the past 40 years on 3,500 subjects. He shows that for every 100 mg decrease in dietary cholesterol, plasma total cholesterol drops by 2.2 mg/dL or about 1%. McNamara also notes that the high levels of dietary cholesterol in many of these studies far exceed the approximately 250 mg/day consumed by the average American [4]. Additionally, the diets in many of the earlier studies on cholesterol and heart disease were not only high in cholesterol but were also high in fat, saturated fat and animal products, and low in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, dietary factors known to influence circulating cholesterol levels and vascular disease risk. Given the functional components of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, it is essential that these foods be included whenever the effects of diet on health and disease are studied. ---Recent studies have cast further doubt on the relationship between dietary cholesterol and heart disease. Steven Kritchevsky and David Kritchevsky review recent epidemiological studies relating dietary factors to incidence of heart disease. The authors note that research has not established a significant independent relationship between dietary cholesterol and LDL or total serum cholesterol levels, incidence of heart disease or heart disease deaths. Furthermore, data fail to show a relationship between egg consumption and either serum cholesterol levels or heart disease incidence. Recent research using an endpoint of heart disease and stroke rather than serum cholesterol levels calls into question the need to limit a high cholesterol food like eggs. In their analysis of data from prospective epidemiological studies, Hu et al. [5] found that consumption of up to one egg a day was not related to heart disease or stroke risk[U6] . ---The papers in this issue, along with emerging research, support the importance of educating patients and consumers on changing views in the area of diet and disease prevention, in light of emerging research and new findings on the absence of health risks from dietary cholesterol and new studies showing health benefits from egg consumption. Eggs as a Functional Food--Eggs can be classified as a functional food, a hot button for today’s consumer. Definitions of ‘functional foods‘ has been put forth by several organizations. According to the Institute of Food Technologists, functional foods provide additional physiological benefit beyond that of meeting basic nutritional needs [6]. The International Life Sciences Institute of North America further specifies that functional foods have physiologically active components that give them their functional properties [7]. The American Dietetic Association (ADA) defines several categories of functional foods, among them, unmodified whole foods with physiologically active components [8]. Whole foods that have not been enriched or fortified with functional ingredients fit ADA’s definition. Among the foods cited by ADA as functional whole foods are tomatoes for their lycopene, tea for its polyphenols and fermented dairy products for their probiotics. The position of ADA recognizes that ‘functional foods, including whole foods and fortified, enriched, or enhanced foods, have a potentially beneficial effect on health when consumed as part of a varied diet‘ [8]. Eggs fit ADA’s definition of a functional food: they are a whole food with active components. The article by Clare M. Hasler looks at the functional foods trend and the contributions eggs can make to the functional foods category. --Consumers are becoming more familiar with the concept of functional foods. A 1998 telephone survey conducted by the International Food Information Council (IFIC) found that 74% of adults surveyed could name a food or food component that was associated with health benefits [9]. The list included broccoli, oranges, carrots, and garlic, but, not surprisingly, eggs were not on the list. However, the new egg message may slowly be reaching consumers. Linda Gilbert notes in her paper that regular egg consumption has been increasing steadily; thirty percent of shoppers surveyed in 1999 eat eggs at least twice a week, compared to 23% in 199conducted for the International Food Information Council found that, while unmotivated consumers were skeptical of information on diet and health, they would be open to f2. Gilbert’s research suggests that, as consumers become more aware of the beneficial compounds in eggs, they will include eggs in their diet more often. ---Health professionals can help consumers develop a positive attitude toward functional foods. A survey unctional food components if added to or present in foods they already eat and like [10]. However, it is important to educate the consumer on the importance of a balanced, healthful diet rather than on single nutrients or functional components.

A Review of Scientific Research and Recommendations Regarding Eggs

Abstract

For much of the past 40 years, the public has been warned away from eggs because of a concern over coronary heart disease risk. This concern is based on three observations: 1. eggs are a rich source of dietary cholesterol; 2. when fed experimentally, dietary cholesterol increases serum cholesterol and; 3. high serum cholesterol predicts the onset of coronary heart disease. However, data from free-living populations show that egg consumption is not associated with higher cholesterol levels. Furthermore, as a whole, the epidemiologic literature does not support the idea that egg consumption is a risk factor for coronary disease. Within the nutritional community there is a growing appreciation that health derives from an overall pattern of diet rather than from the avoidance of particular foods, and there has been a shift in the tone in recent dietary recommendations away from “avoidance” messages to ones that promote healthy eating patterns. The most recent American Heart Association guidelines no longer include a recommendation to limit egg consumption, but recommend the adoption of eating practices associated with good health. Based on the epidemiologic evidence, there is no reason to think that such a healthy eating pattern could not include eggs.

Potential antifertility agents from plants- a comprehensive review.

J Ethnopharmacol. 2012 Mar 6;140(1):1-32-Authors: Kumar D, Kumar A, Prakash O

Abstract--ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Traditional medicines are practiced worldwide for regulation fertility since ancient times. This review provides a comprehensive summary of medicinal flora inhabitating throughout the world regarding their traditional usage by various tribes/ethnic groups for fertility regulation in females.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bibliographic investigation was carried out by analyzing classical text books and peer reviewed papers, consulting worldwide accepted scientific databases from the last six decades. Plants/their parts/extracts traditionally used for abortion, contraception, emmenagogue and sterilization purposes have been considered as antifertility agents. Research status of selected potential plant species has been discussed. Further, compounds isolated from plants with attributed fertility regulating potentials are also classified into three categories: (a) phytoconstituents with anti-implantation activity, (b) phytoconstituents with abortifacient activity and (c) phytoconstituents with contraceptive activity.--RESULTS: 577 plant species belonging to 122 families, traditionally used in fertility regulation in females, have been recorded, of which 298 plants have been mentioned as abortifacients (42%), 188 as contraceptives (31%), 149 as emmenagogues (24%), and 17 as sterilizers. Among 122 plant families, fabaceae constitutes 49.2%, asteraceae 40.98%, euphorbiaceae 19.7%, apiaceae 16.4%, poaceae 12.3%, labiateae 11.5%, and others in lesser proportion. Various plant parts used in fertility regulation include leaves (25%), roots (22%), fruits (15%), seeds (12%), stem/stem bark (37%), and flowers (4%). Some active compounds, isolated from about various plant species, have been reported to possess significant antifertility potential. --CONCLUSION: This review clearly indicates that it is time to increase the number of experimental studies to find out novel potential chemical entities from such a vast array of unexploited plants having traditional role in fertility regulation. Also, the mechanisms of action by which plant extracts and their active compounds exert antifertility effects remain to be studied.--PMID: 22245754 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Potent Human Toxins Prevalent in Canada's Freshwaters

ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) — Nutrient pollution, one of the greatest threats to our freshwater resources, is responsible for the algal blooms that blanket our lakes and waterways in summer months. Large blooms of cyanobacteria ('blue green algae') can cause fish kills, increase the cost of drinking water treatment, devalue shoreline properties, and pose health risks to people, pets, and wildlife. A new paper just published in the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences shows that microcystin, a toxin produced by cyanobacteria, is present in Canadian lakes in every province.---"Canadians enjoying their summer at the cottage need to know that those green scums of algae washing up on their beach are not only unsightly, but can also be a threat to their health and their children's health," says lead author, Diane Orihel, a researcher with the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta. "It's time to get serious about cleaning up the nutrients polluting our lakes."---Microcystins are well-established as potent liver toxins to humans and other mammals, and are classified as possible human carcinogens. "Blue-green algae present a growing health concern for domestic, agricultural and recreational water use in Canada and world-wide," warns Dr. David Kinniburgh, the Director of the Alberta Centre for Toxicology at the University of Calgary. "The microcystin toxins they produce can cause acute liver failure in humans and may even cause cancer with long-term exposure."--This study is the first to report on microcystin prevalence at a national scale-data from 246 bodies of water across Canada were collected. The authors determined that water quality was most at risk in lakes with the highest concentrations of nutrients. Nutrient-rich lakes and reservoirs, particularly in central Alberta and southwestern Manitoba, proved to have highest toxin concentrations, though all regions in Canada contained lakes that reached microcystin levels of concern.----A very important finding-that calls for further research-was the strong association between low nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratios and high microcystin concentrations. The authors recommend whole-ecosystem experiments be performed to understand how changing nutrient inputs to lakes affects microcystins and other cyanobacterial toxins. This information is essential for governments to develop effective management strategies for improving water quality in nutrient-polluted lakes.---"Harmful algae blooms are a growing problem worldwide. The more we look, the more we find," remarked international water expert Dr. Stephen Carpenter, Director of the Center for Limnology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, "Orihel and colleagues help define the conditions when we would expect highly toxic freshwater. These insights make it possible to focus management and research on the highest-risk situations."------"This study addresses an issue that has important health consequences, but also highlights the importance of both the underlying basic science and monitoring programs essential to determine environmental changes," says Don Jackson, Co-Editor of the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences.---

Survival and biofilm formation by Group B streptococci in simulated vaginal fluid at different pHs.

Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek. 2012 Mar;101(3):677-82 --Authors: Borges S, Silva J, Teixeira P

Abstract--The Group B Streptococcus (GBS, Streptococcus agalactiae) is an important cause of neonatal and maternal infection. GBS is a commensal organism of the lower gastrointestinal and vaginal tract. A frequent mode of neonatal infection is vertical transmission from pregnant women to their foetus or neonate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the survival and biofilm production of 10 GBS strains in simulated vaginal fluid at pH 4.2, 5.5 and 6.5. GBS survived longer at higher pH than at normal vaginal pH[U7] . At pH 4.2, with the exception of two isolates that were recovered up to 48 and 72 h, viable GBS numbers declined below the limit of detection by 24 h. At higher pH, GBS survived between 3 and 15 days. All isolates investigated were biofilm producers but biofilm production was greater in tryptone soy broth compared to simulated vaginal fluid. The quantity of biofilm produced increased with the rise in the pH. This study suggests that high vaginal pH may influence both GBS survival and biofilm production and thus could be a risk factor for GBS infection.--PMID: 22038130 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Electrifying Success in Raising Antioxidant Levels in Sweet Potatoes

Zapping sweet potatoes with electricity boosts their already-high content of healthful antioxidant levels.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) — Already ranked by some as number one in nutrition among all vegetables, the traditional sweet potato can be nutritionally supercharged ― literally ― with a simple, inexpensive electric current treatment that increases its content of healthful polyphenols or antioxidants by 60 percent, scientists said at a conference in Philadelphia August 20.---Their report on the first electrical enhancement of sweet potatoes, a dietary staple since prehistoric times, was part of the 244th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society. "Many people don't realize it, but sweet potatoes are one of the world's most important food crops," said Kazunori Hironaka, Ph.D., who led the research team.---More than 95 percent of the global sweet potato crop grows in developing countries, where it is the fifth-most important food, and malnutrition is a serious problem," he said. "Our discovery offers a way to further increase the sweet potato role in relieving hunger and improving nutrition and health."---Hironaka and colleagues at the University of the Ryukyus, Nishihara, Okinawa, Japan, previously discovered that passing an electric current through white potatoes increased the polyphenol levels by 60 percent. Polyphenols are a family of chemical compounds found naturally in fruits and vegetables that may help protect people from diseases and the effects of aging.---The electric current apparently stresses the potatoes, and they produce more polyphenols as a protective measure. The team suspected that the same effect would occur with sweet potatoes, but until now, nobody had tried.--In the new study, Hironaka and colleagues used the same approach, putting sweet potatoes into a salt solution that conducts electricity, and then passing various amounts of electric current through the water and the potatoes for 5 minutes. The best results came with 0.2 amps of current, which increased antioxidant activity in the potatoes by 1.4 times and total polyphenol content by 1.6 times compared to untreated potatoes. He noted that untreated sweet potatoes already are high in antioxidants, with 7 times more polyphenols than other potatoes.---The Center for Science in the Public Interest once ranked the baked sweet potato number one in nutrition of all vegetables. With a score of 184, the sweet potato outscored the next-highest vegetable (a baked white potato) by more than 100 points. Points were given for content of dietary fiber, naturally occurring sugars and complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins A and C, iron and calcium. Points were deducted for fat content (especially saturated fat), sodium, cholesterol, added refined sugars and caffeine.--Hironaka also noted that the electrical zapping seems to have no effect on the flavor, and that steaming is the best method of cooking to retain the most antioxidants. The electrical treatment method is inexpensive and simple enough to be used on small farms or in food distribution centers, he noted.--Story Source-The above story is reprinted from materials provided by American Chemical Society (ACS).

Chemotherapy can backfire and boost cancer growth

Cancer-busting chemotherapy can cause damage to healthy cells which triggers them to secrete a protein that sustains tumour growth and resistance to further treatment, a study said Sunday.--Researchers in the United States made the "completely unexpected" finding while seeking to explain why cancer cells are so resilient inside the human body when they are easy to kill in the lab.--They tested the effects of a type of chemotherapy on tissue collected from men with prostate cancer, and found "evidence of DNA damage" in healthy cells after treatment, the scientists wrote in Nature Medicine.--Chemotherapy works by inhibiting reproduction of fast-dividing cells such as those found in tumours.--The scientists found that healthy cells damaged by chemotherapy secreted more of a protein called WNT16B which boosts cancer cell survival.--"The increase in WNT16B was completely unexpected," study co-author Peter Nelson of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle told AFP.--The protein was taken up by tumour cells neighbouring the damaged cells.--"WNT16B, when secreted, would interact with nearby tumour cells and cause them to grow, invade, and importantly, resist subsequent therapy," said Nelson.--In cancer treatment, tumours often respond well initially, followed by rapid regrowth and then resistance to further chemotherapy.--Rates of tumour cell reproduction have been shown to accelerate between treatments.--"Our results indicate that damage responses in benign cells... may directly contribute to enhanced tumour growth kinetics," wrote the team.--The researchers said they confirmed their findings with breast and ovarian cancer tumours.--The result paves the way for research into new, improved treatment, said Nelson.--"For example, an antibody to WNT16B, given with chemotherapy, may improve responses (kill more tumour cells)," he said in an email exchange.--"Alternatively, it may be possible to use smaller, less toxic doses of therapy."--mlr/boc

GMOs shall not pass borders, Turkish agricultural minister declares

ANKARA

Ministry of Health recently launched a campaign to promote healthy eating habits. The animated series 'Organikos' aim to teach children about fruits and vegetables in an entertaining way.---Turkey will never produce vegetables or plants with genetically modified organisms (GMOs), Agriculture Minister Mehdi Eker said at a March 23 meeting with editors from the Anatolian news agency. ---“It is forbidden to produce any plants or vegetables in Turkey that have been genetically altered or genetically transferred. This is not happening, has never happened and will never happen,” said Eker, stressing that Turkey had passed a law on bio safety that had been approved by the United Nations General Directorate. ---
Eker explained that despite pressure from various international organizations, Turkey had never imported or produced GMOs, unlike other countries. Furthermore, Turkey has established a bio safety committee to make sure that no imported produce contains any genetically modified organisms. This nine member committee is comprised of individuals from the Food, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Ministry, as well as the Health and Environment Ministry, in addition to members from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and universities. When looking at a specific product, the committee decides whether or not it poses a safety threat to human safety, animal safety, environmental safety, or any socio-economic risks, said Eker. ---Turkey only allows for the import of genetically modified corn and soya used for animal feed, which is then processed by the animal and is in no way harmful to animal or human health, said Eker. It is not used as a food item. ----However, Tarık Nehat Dinç, who runs the Green Peace Turkey campaign against GMOs told the Hürriyet Daily News in a phone interview that the use of genetically modified animal feed still introduces GMOs into agriculture and is risky. He claims that a study conducted in Italy in 2006 showed that one out of four packages of milk from cows that had been consuming genetically modified feed had traces of GMO DNA particles.---“What we want is for the government to make sure that there are labels on milk, eggs, meat and cheese, saying that these products come from animals that have been fed genetically modified feed.” Dinç also said that there were currently 29 GMO agricultural products being examined by the bio safety committee and that if these products are deemed safe they will be allowed into the country for food consumption and used in products like corn syrup and canola oil. ---Meanwhile, Eker also said that he found the recent boom in ad campaigns for honey alarming and exaggerated. ---“Right now we are conducting serious market research regarding honey and taking samples. If we find any problems, there will be serious penalties,” said Eker. He also stressed that they were keeping close tabs on all the honey advertisements and that within as short a span as ten-days they would be ready to disclose the names of companies that have altered the composition of honey on the ministry’s official web site.

U-turn on GM in Turkey

NOTE: This looks like another major victory in Turkey where the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture has already announced that it plans to introduce mandatory labeling for GMO-fed animal products. --Despite the misleading headline, the article below confirms that the Federation of Food and Drink Industry Associations of Turkey (TGDF) has announced that it has withdrawn an application to import 29 different kinds of GMOs for food production in the light of public hostility and the negative reaction of some of its members - see below. TGDF is a major player with around 2,000 trade members. -----

Turkey's TGDF demands ministral approval on imports of 29 items of genetically modified products

Turkey's Food and Beverage Associations Federation (TGDF) has withdrawn applications to import 29 genetically modified (GM) food items due to negative public reaction, according to a press release yesterday.---TGDF has officially withdrawn the applications with a letter to the Food and Agriculture Ministry, it said in the press release.---The ministry had repeatedly said it would not allow imports of GM food. Turkey only imports certain items of GM feed for animals.----"TGDF has called on those responsible for biological security to put an end to lingering public concerns and confusion, demanded that steps be taken to solve problems deriving from the spread [of GM elements], and withdrawn its applications," read the statement.----This was a historic step, according to Tarık Nejat Dinç, the head of Greenpeace's Mediterranean agriculture team.---"We would like to thank TGDF-member companies such as Sana, Algida, Eti, Nestle, Ülker and Karaköy Güllüoğlu for their prudent attitude," Dinç said. Looking at the federation's statement, the letter seeks to reduce problems resulting from the spread of the use of GM products, he said.----Nadir Güllüoğlu, owner of one of the leading baklava producers in the country, had resigned from TGDF after seeing his brand's name in a list of companies that demanded the importation of GM products.------Source: Black Sea Grain

Heart Calcium Scan Most Effective in Predicting Risk of Heart Disease

ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) — Heart calcium scans are far superior to other assessment tools in predicting the development of cardiovascular disease in individuals currently classified at intermediate risk by their doctors, according to researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.--The test, known as coronary artery calcium (CAC), uses a CT scan to detect calcium build-up in the arteries around the heart. The study findings are presented in the Aug. 22 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.--Current medical guidelines recommend classifying individuals as high, intermediate or low risk using the Framingham Risk Score (FRS), a cardiovascular risk-prediction model. However, doctors realize that the model isn't perfect and that the intermediate group actually includes some individuals who could benefit from more aggressive drug therapy, as well as individuals who could be managed solely with lifestyle measures.--"We know how to treat patients at low and high risk for heart disease, but for the estimated 23 million Americans who are at intermediate risk, we still are not certain about the best way to proceed," said Joseph Yeboah, M.D., assistant professor of cardiology at Wake Forest Baptist and lead author of the study.---The Wake Forest Baptist study, which was funded by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health, evaluated which of the top-tier assessment tools best identified people within the intermediate group who were actually at higher or lower risk. Determining the relative improvements in prediction afforded by various tests, especially when used in conjunction with the FRS, could help identify intermediate-risk people who may benefit from more aggressive primary prevention interventions, including the use of aspirin and the setting of lower targets for drug treatment of LDL cholesterol and blood pressure, Yeboah said.---Using data from the NHLBI's Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) study, the researchers did a head-to-head comparison of six top assessment tests for cardiovascular risk prediction in intermediate-risk people: CAC score, ankle-brachial index, brachial flow mediated dilation, carotid intima-media thickness, high sensitivity C-reactive protein and family history of heart disease.---Of the 6,814 total MESA participants from six communities across the country, 1,330 were considered at intermediate risk and were included in this study. The researchers determined that the CAC score proved the best in predicting which among the intermediate-risk people would go on to have heart disease in the ensuing 7.5 years (average) of follow-up observation.---"If we want to concentrate our attention on the subset of intermediate-risk patients who are at the highest risk for cardiovascular disease, CAC is clearly the best tool we have in our arsenal to identify them. However, we have to look at other factors such as costs and risks associated with radiation exposure from a CT scan before deciding if everyone in the intermediate group should be screened," Yeboah said.

Additional research is needed to explore the costs, benefits and risks of widespread use of CAC screening in people at risk of heart disease, he said.---The study's co-authors are: Robyn L. McClelland, Ph.D., University of Washington, Seattle; Tamar S. Polonsky, M.D., University of Chicago; Gregory L. Burke, M.D., Jeffery J. Carr, M.D., and David M. Drink Made from Berry Wine May Provide Tasty Drug for Diabetes

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) — In evaluating the bioactive compounds of Illinois blueberry and blackberry wines, University of Illinois scientists have found compounds that inhibit enzymes responsible for carbohydrate absorption and assimilation. And that could mean a tasty way to help people with diabetes decrease their blood sugar. "We're thinking about a dealcoholized fermented fruit beverage that would optimize the inhibition of the alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase enzymes and also make use of the wines' other healthful bioactive components," said Elvira de Mejia, a U of I professor of food chemistry and food toxicology.--Graduate student Michelle Johnson evaluated the nutritional value of 19 Illinois wines, deciding on a blueberry-blackberry blend for maximum effectiveness.--In the in vitro study, the scientists compared the anti-carb effects of the alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase enzymes with acarbose, an anti-diabetes drug. The carb-degrading enzymes were inhibited in a range of 91.8 percent for alpha-amylase compared to acarbose and 103.2 percent for alpha-glucosidase compared to acarbose, de Mejia said.---The study is the first to assess the effect of berry fermentation at different temperatures on these carb-inhibiting enzymes. At both room and cold (4ºC) temperatures, berry wine retained the ability to degrade the enzymes, she said.---In a second study, Johnson quantified the antioxidant, polyphenol, and anthocyanin content of blueberry and blackberry wines. Her proposed blend contains an abundance of these bioactive compounds, which add to its healthful properties.---The researchers are particularly interested in the ability of anthocyanins to reduce inflammation, which contributes to the development of many chronic illnesses, including cancer, metabolic disease, and cardiovascular disease. To that end, they are experimenting with the berries' effects on inflammatory cells, and they have found that anthocyanins reduce markers associated with the inflammatory response.---"Preliminary studies have indicated that anthocyanins may have a positive effect on cognition and overall brain health while protecting against some of the effects of aging, such as Alzheimer's disease and memory loss. These berries have some very intriguing components," de Mejia said.---A food chemist, de Mejia would like to remove the alcohol from the wines, leaving the carb-degrading enzyme compounds, the inflammation-fighting anthocyanins, and other beneficial bioactive components in a functional and flavorful drink for diabetics and others.--The bioactive ingredients could also be added to any prepared beverage to give it color, flavor, and nutritional punch, making them useful to the food industry, she said.---Studies detailing this research were published in a recent issue of the Journal of Food Science, with Michelle H. Johnson of the U of I's Division of Nutritional Sciences as co-author, and in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry with the U of I's Michelle H. Johnson, Anita Lucius, and Tessa Mayer as co-authors.--Story Source-The above story is reprinted from materials provided by University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, via EurekAlert!, a service of AAAS.

Study Shows Long-Term Effects of Radiation in Pediatric Cancer Patients

ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) — For many pediatric cancer patients, total body irradiation (TBI) is a necessary part of treatment during bone marrow transplant- it's a key component of long term survival. But lengthened survival creates the ability to notice long term effects of radiation as these youngest cancer patients age. A University of Colorado Cancer Center study recently published in the journal Pediatric Blood & Cancer details these late effects of radiation.---"These kids basically lie on a table and truly do get radiation from head to toe. There is a little blocking of the lungs, but nothing of, for example, the brain or the kidneys," says Jean Mulcahy-Levy, MD, research fellow at the CU Cancer Center and the paper's first author.---Of 15 patients who received TBI before age 3, many developed endocrine and metabolic problems including testicular malfunction (78 percent), restrictive pulmonary disease due to high levels of blood triglycerides (74 percent), and cataracts (78 percent). Likewise, 90 percent of patients showed abnormally low levels of growth hormone, and 71 percent were considerably under height. Additional late effects of TBI included kidney, liver, skeletal and cardiac malfunction -- and three of four patients whose IQ had been tested before TBI showed cognitive decline.---"Fifteen doesn't seem like a large number, but because we have such a good pediatric bone marrow transplant program here at Children's Hospital Colorado and radiation therapy program at the CU Cancer Center, we were able to get a large enough cohort of patients to see these overall effects," Mulcahy-Levy says.---The study supports the recommendations of the Children's Oncology Group for long term follow up care for children receiving TBI (survivorshipguidelines.org). Specifically, Mulcahy-Levy hopes that increasing awareness of likely effects will help patients and their doctors screen for, detect, and correct likely effects of TBI.---"It's not so much that you want to stop TBI, which is frequently a necessary part of treatment, but this study shows it's important know about these problems in order to address them appropriately and proactively," Mulcahy-Levy says.---Story Source--The above story is reprinted from materials provided by University of Colorado Denver. Breakthrough- Electronic circuits that are integrated with your skin

A team of engineers today announced a discovery that could change the world of electronics forever. Called an "epidermal electronic system" (EES), it's basically an electronic circuit mounted on your skin, designed to stretch, flex, and twist — and to take input from the movements of your body.---EES is a leap forward for wearable technologies, and has potential applications ranging from medical diagnostics to video game control and accelerated wound-healing. Engineers John Rogers and Todd Coleman, who worked on the discovery, tell io9 it's a huge step towards erasing the divide that separates machine and human. ---Coleman and Rogers say they developed EES to forego the hard and rigid electronic "wafer" format of traditional electronics in favor of a softer, more dynamic platform.---To accomplish this, their team brought together scientists from several labs to develop "filamentary serpentine" (threadlike and squiggly) circuitry. When this circuitry is mounted on a thin, rubber substrate with elastic properties similar to skin, the result is a flexible patch that can bend and twist, or expand and contract, all without affecting electronic performance.--This video demonstrates the resilience of the EES patch, and how easily it can be applied. The patch (comprised of the circuitry and rubber substrate) is first mounted on a thin sheet of water-soluble plastic, then applied to the skin with water like a temporary tattoo.---How Will We Wear Our Second Skin? So what can an EES really do for us? The short answer is: a lot. In the paper describing their new technology, published in this week's issue of Science, the researchers illustrated the adaptability of their concept by demonstrating functionality in a wide array of electronic components, including biometric sensors, LEDs, transistors, radio frequency capacitors, wireless antennas, and even conductive coils and solar cells for power.[U1]

We asked Rogers what he thought were the most promising applications for the new technology. He said medicine was the most compelling:--Our paper demonstrates our ability to monitor ECG (as a monitor of heart disease and metabolism), EMG (as a measure of, among other things, gait during walking) and EEG (as a measure of cognitive state and awareness).--We have also shown that these same devices can stimulate muscle tissue to induce contractions. [U2] When combined with sensing/monitoring, such modes of use could be valuable in physical rehabilitation. We also have interest in sleep monitoring (for sleep apnea), and neo-natal care (monitoring premature babies, in particular).---According to Rogers, the electronic skin has already been shown to monitor patients' health measurements as effectively as conventional state-of-the-art electrodes that require bulky pads, straps, and irritating adhesive gels. "The fidelity of the measurement is equal to the best existing technology that is out there today, but in a very unique skin-like form," he explained.

What's more, the electronic skin's unique properties allow it to do things that existing biometric sensors simply can't touch. Todd Coleman, who co-led the project with Rogers, told io9 how an EES could be applied to a person's throat to serve as a communication aid:--Within the realm of biomedical applications, one can imagine providing benefits to patients with muscular or neurological disorders like ALS. For example, in the Science article, our research group used the device…to control a computer strategy game with muscles in the throat by speaking the commands.--In principle, the same function could have been achieved by simply mouthing commands rather than speaking them out loud. As such, this capability could be provided to ALS patients so that they could "speak" through an epidermal electronics system that is un-noticeable to them, and invisible to other observers.

Eroding the Distinction Between Machine and Human
Outside the context of biomedicine, the EES's inconspicuous nature opens up a whole world of possibilities. The patches are already barely noticeable, but when mounted directly onto a temporary tattoo, for example, any evidence of electronic circuitry disappears. Coleman said:---[This technology] provides a huge conceptual advance in wedding the biological world to the cyber world in a manner that is very natural. In some sense, the boundary between the electronics world and the biological world is becoming increasingly amorphous. The ramifications of this are mind-blowing, to say the least.[U3]  I envision endless applications that extend beyond biomedical applications. For example, we could use the exact same technology – and specifically its discrete tattoo-like appearance – to perform covert military operations where an agent could communicate to the command station with these electric signals without ever speaking a word.--Coleman's statement touches on what is perhaps this most important thing about today's announcement, namely the precedent it sets for future technologies that aim to combine the organismal with the synthetic.[U4] --"The blurring of electronics and biology is really the key point here," said Northwestern University's Yonggang Huang, with whom Rogers and Coleman collaborated. "All established forms of electronics are hard, rigid. Biology is soft, elastic. It's two different worlds. This is a way to truly integrate them."--Looking to the future, Rogers echoes his colleague's sentiments. Describing what he envisions for his research group in the coming years, he said-We would like to expand the functionality such that the devices not only seamlessly integrate with the human body in a mechanical sense, but that they also communicate and interact with the tissue in modes that go beyond electrons and photons (the ‘currency' of semiconductor device technologies), to the level of fluids and biomolecules (i.e. the ‘currency' of biology). We are hoping, in this way, to blur the distinction between electronics and the human body, in ways that can advance human health.

After-Birth Abortion- Eugenicists Say Babies are a Parasitic Burden on Society

theintelhub.com

According to Alberto Giubilini and Francesca Minerva, “after-birth abortion” is proposed as a form of “contraception” that would allow babies to be killed after they are born.

In a paper published in the Journal of Medical Ethics---“[W]hen circumstances occur after birth such that they would have justified abortion, what we call after-birth abortion should be permissible. … [W]e propose to call this practice ‘after-birth abortion’, rather than ‘infanticide,’ to emphasize that the moral status of the individual killed is comparable with that of a fetus … rather than to that of a child.---Therefore, we claim that killing a newborn could be ethically permissible in all the circumstances where abortion would be. Such circumstances include cases where the newborn has the potential to have an (at least) acceptable life, but the well-being of the family is at risk.”--Giubilini and Minerva believe that infants are a “threat” to parents because of their financial burden to their parents and that this justifies the murder of new-born babies.--In the Senate, Joe Pitts and Chris Smith spoke out against this ideology. Smith explains: “Giubilini and Minerva say the devaluation of new-born babies is inextricably linked to the devaluation of unborn children.”---Ann Furedi of the British Pregnancy Advisory Board stated that it was of no consequence to define the point when a fetus is subject to legal limitation with regard to abortion rights.--Giubilini and Minerva agree with this summation by stating that “merely being human is not in itself a reason for ascribing someone a right to life. [U5] Indeed, many humans are not considered subjects of a right to life,” such as “spare embryos where research on embryo stem cells is permitted” or “fetuses where abortion is permitted---By defining personhood as being established “some time” after birth, Giubilini and Minerva assert that a fetus has no claim to personhood, and therefore no right to life.---They write that:

“[I]n order for a harm to occur, it is necessary that someone is in the condition of experiencing that harm. If a potential person, like a fetus and a newborn, does not become an actual person, like you and us, then there is neither an actual nor a future person who can be harmed, which means that there is no harm at all. … In these cases, since non-persons have no moral rights to life, there are no reasons for banning after-birth abortions. … Indeed, however weak the interests of actual people can be, they will always trump the alleged interest of potential people to become actual ones, because this latter interest amounts to zero.”---Giubilini and Minerva support previous arguments for infanticide regardless of whether or not the baby were given a short lifespan due to a medical prognosis.--Simply by being born the baby is regarded as an “unbearable burden on someone, then people should be given the chance of not being forced to do something they cannot afford.”--Parents, relatives and even society should be enabled to force a mother to submit her child to infanticide because of the benefits that one less person would bring to our world.---Giubilini and Minerva state that infants are dependent on parents just as fetuses are parasites to the mother’s body. And since no one can ensure that this person will not die prematurely in the future, the investment of resources, time and emotional support cannot be assumed to be a right of the infant.[U6] ---During pregnancy, the development of the fetus can reveal defects that can legally warrant a partial-birth abortion. Giubilini and Minerva argue that this fact can be extended to after birth because a defective baby can be an “economical, social or psychological” burden because of the energy needed to care for the child.---They say that “people should be given the chance of not being forced to do something they cannot afford.”---The prevention of right to life for infants has another supporter in a study published by the Archives of General Psychiatry (AGP) that asserted pre-mature babies are at an increased risk for bipolar disorder, depression and a wide range of psychosis that would render them a danger to themselves and others later in life.--Marjorie Wallace, chief executive of a SANE, a mental health charity, stated: “We already knew that premature birth may be linked to schizophrenia, but to see evidence linking it to a range of psychiatric conditions which required hospitalization is striking.”--While Giubilini and Minerva use eugenics agendas to coerce the public into believing that society would be better off without certain “burdensome” infants, an outright attack on fertility is taking place.--Dr. Martin Matzuk , professor of molecular biology, molecular and human genetics, and pharmacology at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), is working on a birth-control pill for men that blocks the proteins essential for sperm production – rendering men “voluntarily” infertile.---The BCM has a long history of working to expanding the eugenics agenda with the use of genetic technologies; including collaboration with the German Nazis and their march toward using genetics to create a “better human race”. By looking for “justice as fairness” with the ethical practice of genetics and eugenics concerning applied science and social constructs.--The advantage of eugenics ideology in genetic technology is viewed as “the greatest benefit of individuals with the least advantages.” And so by subverting the fact of eugenics in genetic advances will alleviate prejudice and make sure that the eugenics agenda is devoid of negative perceptions so that the genetically disadvantaged could be touted as the beneficiaries of eugenic applications in genetic technologies.--Last month, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) hosted The London Family Planning Summit (LFPS) where the BMGF secured funding for depopulation efforts in Africa, India and the Southeast Asian region.---Melinda Gates believes that if she can prevent 40% of people who would otherwise have been born, she could justify her family planning scheme to make women healthier who’s “families are more successful and their communities are more prosperous.”

Simply put: the BMGF has classified “unwanted” pregnancies as justification for killing people and they are focusing on eventually eliminating this number to reduce the world’s population. Africa, a big focus for the BMGF is being targeted along with Muslim nations.---In this propaganda cartoon, the depiction of brown and black women as disfigured potatoes having much more fun because they have fewer children is not only offensive, but telling of how these global Elite view the people they purport to be “saving”.---By preventing births, the film says that 600,000 people would not be born. Contraception as a first step in the global Elite’s plan to depopulation by appearing to help save lives of women could be quite effective.
